Hi

I wash my hair with baking soda only. I stopped using commercial shampoos ages ago. Anything that contains
the foaming agents Sodium Laurel Sulphate, Sodium Laureth Sulphate, etc are real bad for seb derm.
Most shampoos you can buy contain too may harsh chemicals and some believe that sulphates can
cause skin conditions, they are even used in labs as skin irritants.

Thanks for your imput. The shampoo I'm using works well as it is medicated and contains no SLSs, which I agree are bad for not only seb derm, but also skin in general. I'm not sure using only baking soda would be suitable for me, due to the pH-balance issues.
I'm really after some suggestions on conditioner(s) to try, but thanks anyway Posted Image

It is very interesting indeed. Something like this has been long overdue. Hope they are onto something
here for the sake of all people who suffer from those afflictions. Thanks for posting!!!!

Im hoping someone on this SD thread can answer this for me. I am convinced I have SD as my skin has large huge pores that clog with dead skin despite using BHA's or AHA's to unclog them. I also have rosacea as well and my skin is dry and flakey yet has an oily film on it. I have slight dandruff and my forhead flakes as well as my eyebrows. I also get a rash on the sides of my face that resemble red sporadic dots spread around this area. Sounds totally like SD right? So the naturopath I had been seeing did a test on my stool twice now and both times it came back negative for yeast overgrowth. Im so confused as I thought SD was related to Candida and yeast and feel my symptoms are classic SD. I changed my diet a year ago but never achieved the results I was hoping for with my skin. I feel I am worse now than a year ago when I was eating anything I wanted. Now my diet is pretty clean..Brown rice cereal for breakfast or a Kashi one with Almond Milk or Coconut Milk, coffee (my vice), lunch is salads with chicken or avocados with black beans, and my dinner is a meat and fresh veggies. I have brown rice or quinoa several times a week as my carbs and this week I had buckwheat pancakes made with rice milk. I do slip up and have a gluten free cookie occasionally and I love Luna Bars. The sugar is like 8g in the luna bars but its my only treat. I take fish oil daily, a good probiotic, zinc and alpha lipoic acid. I dont take any anti fungals daily but will sometimes cook with coconut oil. So how come I feel like I have SD but I got a negative test, is that possible?

I haven't read the entire thread (just the first couple pages), but I'd just like to say that I have mild SD in the creases of my nose and on my forehead (developed a few years after ending my successful accutane treatment). Because of this, I've NEVER been able to wear foundation (not like that's a huge problem, I'm just saying...lol). It always ends up a flaky mess.

Anyway, a few days ago someone on the first page suggested using BP. I had previously ordered some (5%) for my brothers's acne, so I had some lying around. Been putting it on in the evening (on my forehead and nose only) and I'm noticing a difference already. My skin is quite dry...And that would otherwise bother me, but the oily flakes seem to be going away and the texture of my skin is really smooth and not bumpy/rough like it had been. The redness around my nose (which made it look like I had been constantly blowing my nose) has faded almost completely.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. :)

This is what i have always believed. That is very interesting for sure and thanks
for sharing. A few things have come to light recently which may suggest that
they are actually making some headway into understanding and treating this
condition.

Hi,

So glad to hear that you are having some success in controlling your SD!! Do you think that by using your current
treatment that it will be successful in the long run and have you considered treating the SD internally by watching your
diet and/or taking supplements?? Thanks!!!

On Nov. 1st, I started new regimen. I like to think of it as a purging. I'm ridding my skin of all the garbage I've been putting on it these past years. And I'm not taking anything from it (natural essential oils). That means no soap.

I've read somewhere online that the epidermis regenerates itself every 28 days (a complete moon cycle). So I'm going to let it heal itself. I've been taking one 10-15 minute hot shower every day. The heat in the shower is like a sauna. I sweat out all the garbage without stripping my skin with soap. The shower also loosens up my dead skin, making it easier to GENTLY exfoliate with a wash rag. I have a buzz, so I use the rag over my entire head, face, and neck. During the first week of November I was sloughing off handfulls of dead skin.

35 days later, and I've had a lot of improvement. I can't say I am where I want to be, but my skin was damaged. It may need more than 28 days to heal. I'll stick with it, and keep everyone posted. I'm very optimistic.

I should not that I am otherwise healthy. I eat a balanced diet. Quite a bit of junk, but plenty of produce and tons of variety. I am also fairly active.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis and Seborrhea .. Are they the same thing? I was diagnosed with Seborrhea a year ago, although whatever the heck it is, I have been struggling with for a couple years now! Since, like, 15 or 16.. I'm 19 now. I just want it all gone!
Honestly, I'm confused on my conditions. I don't know what to do for it =/ I used an antifungal cream once before. It didn't do anything, though I only used it a very short period. I also used a steroid cream but I didn't trust putting on steroid creams so that was also short lived. Once before when I was on accutane over a year ago I was using a certain moisturizer for rosacea prone red skin and I was wearing a ton of sunblock with zinc and it seemed to help. Maybe it was the zinc? Or probably a coincidence. Idk. But either way It's still here. My skin is just horribleeee :( Red, Irritated, acne, yellow flaky things on my cheeks, itchy skin, and now I believe I'm developing an eczema rash on the side of my face. =/

@ Moonset777 I read that you have had success controlling your SD by lifestyle changes? Do u use any type of face wash? Can the dryness from my accutane course be acting up my inflamed skin?

Hi,

I don't use any type of facewashes whatsoever just good old water to wash my face. Steroid creams are no use if you are looking to clear this
condition and long term use of them especially on the face will damage your skin. Seb Derm easily builds up a resistance to them anyway.
If you wish to improve your condition you must address the situation internally and look at changing your diet in addition to taking
supplements that can be benficial in treating SD. Sorry but I can't give you any advice on the accutane thing as I have never used it and know
very little about it.

P.s If you are looking for a quick reply from me in future it may speed things up if you actually PM me as I rarely visit this Forum
now and only stumbeld across your question by chance today. I hope i can be of some help to you so if there is anything you'd like to
know please get in touch.

I was on Accutane for a month but my insurance got cut off & I can't afford it with no help so I discontinued my course on the 14th of this month. It had made things worse for me due to the drying. It's caused me a ton of eczema rashes. On the sides of my face, Under my chin and on my arms. It's sooo dry it feels like sandpaper. I just don't know what to do nomore Posted Image I was on 80 mgs for 1 month and I guess it's hit my skin with a double whammy of dryness. It's been a week since I've been off accutane and my skin still hasn't gotten back to normal. It's definitely breaking out but it's super dry. Posted Image

wow hopeful thats kind of the way i feel right now. My SD was never this bad until I went on accutane. Im on 20mg once a week, I cant even imagine what 80mg a day is like. Your skin must have been sahara dry!! My derm wants me to go on 30mg a week to see if it will help the oil production in my chin...I would rather the SD than this chin shit...The clogs are disgusting and by the end of the day, I dont leave the house because they look terrible.

Give it a chance. You can't expect to totally clear dandruff after one application of anything.
These things may take several weeks or so before you see a marked improvement.

how does everyone wash their faces when they have SD? Im curious as to what people use as well. I have experiemented with so many in the last year and STILL have not found something that doesnt irritate my rosacea
but removes dead skin, flakes and a bit of light makeup. Its like no such cleanser exists. I been using Garden of Wisdom products and while they seem very good I have not been able to find a cleanser. Ive tried CeraVe, Cetaphil, and harshes ones like Serious Skin Cares AHA cleanser too. Lately Ive been using Mild and Castille Cleaser by GOW and gentlye taking a cotton washcloth and removing all the dead skin that accumulates during the day. Its not makeup because I dont wear any in that area but an accumulation of dead skin cells. Its gross. Then I pat my face dry and when I look back there are hundreds of hard pieces of solidified sebum sticking out of my chin pores. I have to then go around my entire chin area from crease to the tip of my chin with my tweezer and prick them out. They sit right on the top of the pore and can be seen and dont take anything more than a flick of the tweezer to come out. I just dont understand if my skin is oil or dry? What should I put in this area to stop this? This has always been my big question. I know too much exfoliation is bad but how can I start to apply moisturizers and other crap on top when my skin has all this gunk still laying on it? Anyone else have this problem? Also, my flakies are the kind that I can take my tweezer and lift dry sheets of skin off. They are not yellow or oily but more white and dry. They are basically everywhere. Ive done more research on SD and remedies and nothing has panned out in almost a year. ACV is way to harsh, even diluted for my face area. Its ok for the forehead but I then never know what to apply for moisture. Protopic helps the sides of my face where there are basically no pores so it wont clog me or break me out. Ive tried Dermadoctors Born to be mild cleanser and thats too harsh for my skin and I dont know if it removes makeup. Ive changed my diet drastically but will cheat once a day with a low glycemic gluten free cookie. Ive done the anti fungal thing like drinking ACV and taking Oil of Oregano. Ive even resorted to using oral Nystatin perscription from my derm but that did nothing either. My last resort was low dose accutane that I started on October 1. I truely thought it would make the yeast better by lowering oil production and therefore would have nothing to feed off of. I think I was wrong and its only made it worse. Ive only been taking 20mg once a week and cannot believe that low of a dose would do that...sorry for the ton of info i've spurted out by I cant take this one more minute. Ive lost my entire life because of this...I even hid out on christmas eve from my family and kids. I was feeling like i had the flu and was actually glad to be by myself on christmas eve. How sad is that....
