As far as I know and have been told, the only problem that could arise with taking one of the tetracycline derivatives and consuming a lot of alcohol at the same time is the effect it'll have on your liver. It wasn't made to take that kind of abuse.

Lots of fruits and veggies
Fish, turkey,chicken & fish....no red meat
Drink @ least 3 Liters of water daily
Fish Oil 1000 mg 3x a day
B-Complex once daily
Acidophilus once daily
Zinc 50 mg daily
On Dan's Regimen:
Rinse face with water
Wash face with Cetaphil
Apply Neutrogena Healthy Skin Moisturizer w/ AHA
3-4x a week

The half-life of doxycycline but not that of tetracycline was significantly shorter in alcoholics than in controls and in some patients the serum concentration of doxycycline decreased below the generally accepted minimum therapeutic concentration when dosed once daily. So, the dosing twice daily might be indicated especially if additional inducing drugs are used."

There is no danger or hazard when taking doxycycline with alcohol. However, you are correct when consuming large quantities of alcohol mixed with doxycycline will most certainly reduce the effectiveness of the drug. A more detailed explanation to your question can be found at:
