How often do the gals here wash your brushes? I am kinda paranoid about bacteria on brushes and rinse my brushes with water everyday. I dont use shampoo etc. because I am afraid it might irritate my skin. I used to use a brush only for powder but recently started using a brush even for foundation and have noticed quite a difference. My foundation goes on more smoothly and evenly than when I was applying by fingers.
BTW the bacteria cannot live on brushes by themselves, its only when we use them, some of our skin cells goes on the brush and the bacteria can grow on skin cells because it is organic material. So basically when we are washing our brushes, we are removing skin cells from the brush.

definitely don't use shampoo to clean them!! hair products can make you break out.
i clean mine like every couple weeks but i don't use mine every day. my derma told me to soak them in HOTTT water with a foam facial cleanser then leave them to dry.

I use a product called Brush Off every day on my foundation brush. You just spray the brush a couple times, wipe with a tissue and your brush is clean. Every few weeks I wash them with hot water and face soap.

I wash my used face brushes once every three days, and I wash my eyeshadow brushes after every use. I'm very prone to breakouts and will sometimes use shampoo (with conditioner) to clean my brushes. Most of my face brushes are synthetic so they can take the shampoo. If you have natural bristle brushes, you might want to use a gentle face cleanser.
You need to use something other than water by itself. Rinsing your brushes in water will not get rid of all the cosmetic residue. Germs are sticky little bastards. That's why they recommend you wash your hands with warm, soapy water

I use a facial cleanser that I dont use on my face like some Biore facial cleanser (the kind that is supposed to keep the oil down on your face). I use that and make sure i rinse very well. Oh... I do mine weekly.

That's what I use once a week. A gentle facewash works well.
I also use a tiny bit of jojoba to keep them soft.
