Very freaked out: rectal bleeding on accutane

52 posts in this topic

I study medicine and I have to write an essay about anal bleeding. I was wondering if anybody could give me some hints about this topic. I know that there is many material out there about this topic and I am not sure what to write. I was wondering to write about colon polyposis syndrome or maybe about gastrointestinal tract bleeding. What do you think is the better topic? Thank you

I think I made up my mind and that I will try to write about anal bleeding in teenagers. I found several sources and forums where members with problems discus about their experiences with anal bleeding. I know that this usually affect older people but there are cases where teenagers are having these problems, and this has intrigued me a lot. Do you think that this is a good idea? Also I found interesting stuff on this site about

Hi, I had the same experience. In my case it is proctitis, possibly the ulcerative form. Hydrocortisone suppositories have helped clear it up. Nonetheless, stop treatment immediately and make an appointment with a gastroenternologist. Recently accutane has been linked to inflammatory bowel diseases, crohns and ulcerative colitis. Many people agree that to inflammatory bowel diseases are more painful than having acne. I have come to learn that beauty is of no true value, but if only in your heart and I regret taking accutane. At the time I did it because I knew it was wrong.

The first sign of blood i'd call my derm up right away, hope you did. Also are you drinking a lot of water throughout the day? Accutane is very drying, inside and out.

It's not like money would help anyway...if you get an inflammatory bowel disease, that's for life. No amount of money would be worth putting up with that crap.

I know you probably think im being silly but i do have a few problems down that area its not the first time ive bled... tbh i think its worse now because ive just found that piles have returned :( blurgh gross... so im guessing its that. If it doesnt go away soon i will definatly have a word with my derm :)

I'm seriously questioning your sanity if you're still on Accutane after experiencing rectal bleeding.

I'm going to spell it out in laymen terms for you, rectal bleeding is out of the norm and you should cease taking any more pills until you meet with your derm to address the problem.

I hope I don't care about you more than you care about yourself.

No I don't think it's silly...I've had gastrointestinal problems on antibiotics for over a year and stayed on them for perfect skin. Sooner or later I had to deal with the consequences. If you had problems before accutane, you could have some sort of bacterial/parasite/yeast infection. Hopefully nothing worse than that though. Bleeding though is a sign of some kind of obstruction in the GI tract and accutane could be making it worse.

I really think mines to do with my hemoroids (sp?) though. I havnt been eating good lately and ive been constipated :( plus with being on my period i always get swollen up and find it hard to go. If it does persist though il go to the docs about it. its fresh blood and is only there when i wipe... none in the toilet or in my actual poo. Ive also had it before so i know its not solely down to accutane. I think i kept bleeding because i must have torn my skin and becuase my poo was hard it kept opening the cut, i'll keep an eye on it though :) btw i do care about myself :) i just know when somethings wrong and when its just a little pile haha x

I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH: IF YOU HAVE BLOOD IN YOUR BOWEL MOVEMENTS AS A RESULT OF USING ACCUTANE, STOP USING THE DRUG IMMEDIATELY. I HAD THE SAME SYMPTONS BACK IN 2002, AND IGNORED THEM AND KEPT USING THE DRUG. THE BLOOD IN YOUR STOOL INDICATES THE COMING ON OF CROHN'S DISEASE OR ANOTHER SERIOUS GASTROINTESTINAL DISORDER, AND IF YOU KEEP TAKING ACCUTANE, YOU WILL DEVELOP SEVERE ABDOMINAL PAIN ATTACKS ALMOST DAILY LATER IN LIFE. I was diagnosed last year after years of abdominal pain attacks and rectal bleeding. I finally decided to do something about it. IT IS NOT WORTH HAVING CROHN'S DISEASE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE TO TAKE THIS DRUG. I also have developed Psoriasis as a result of this drug. I don't know which is worse: The embarassment of Psoriasis or the pain of Crohn's disease. I am 28 now, got done using the drug when I was 20, and the syptoms persist to this day and I'm told aren't going away until the day I die.

ACCUTANE RUINED MY LIFE, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES IGNORE BLOOD IN THE STOOL!

I see what you mean. You should probably still get it checked out though immediately because it could be something bad even if you're pretty sure it's not. Try to eat soft foods but have some fiber (maybe some cooked vegetables or blended veggies will help). You're probably just dry but even so you should ask the doc.

I'm sorry you had this happen to you. I've heard about these horrible intestinal problems that come as a result of accutane and I really wish everyone would consider this before taking it. I'm not sure if they recognized this back when you took it, though. It's really sad that they offer this drug to just about anyone with a decent amount of acne. There are always other options.

I feel for you, I really do. I hope you the best man, it sucks that one uninformed decision can drastically change your life.

You wouldn't think it would be meds but hey, it's the cards life dealt ya.

Hey there. This happened to me too. Don't worry! It's just dryness!

Remedy: gently rub some vaseline on that area at night before you sleep. Aquaphor works too! THis will take care of the dry skin down there. It worked for me.

I know how upsetting this is, I was worried too. But remember that it's just part of the dryness.

However, you need to check each time you go to the bathroom and make sure that there's no blood in your stool. That is what might indicate some serious bowel issues. THis is indicated in the pamphlet that came with your medication.

Good luck, and I hope that helps you as much as it helped me!

Wow....I came upon this thread, and I've been having the same problem....only I JUST had surgery for hemmorhoids (sp?) a few weeks ago and I just assumed I've been bleeding because of that. But it's been long enough that the amount of blood I've been seeing seemed unnatural. Not only should I have healed more than that by now, but I FEEL more healed than that. The amount of blood is surprising sometimes.

But it NEVER occurred to me that the blood could be from the Accutane and it would have been there even if I didn't have surgery. This was very helpful to me, thanks!

Now I'm worried about Crone's Disease. And it's probably impossible to tell if my bleeding is from the surgery or from the Accutane, or if I'm developing Crone's.....but I will bring it up to my doctor. It would suck if they take me off the Accutane....it's working so beautifully.

I've been taking Roaccutane for 13 days and have just experienced my first case of blood during bowel movements. Very little, and only when wiping. I read about this happening to others on this forum before I even started my course, so I wasn't overly surprised when it happened to me (wasn't over the moon, either!). I will monitor over the next day or two and will inform my dermatologist. I have experienced minor flare-ups of acne so far, but the pimples come and go quickly. I'm experiencing dry skin and lips, but I've been moisturising and applying lip balm regularly.

If you experience this symptom, you should probably stop treatment and see a doctor. This isn't something you should try to self-diagnose.

I went to my doctor with the same problem...2 weeks into accutane I had ALOT of bright red blood in the toilet really scary. Went to the doctor a few days later, she took a look seems I have anal fissures. She said it happens to alot of people on accutane because of increased dryness, so to eat more fruit and fiber and avoid constipation, and that its not serious and will go away after the course.

She said DO NOT USE VASELINE. It increases the humidity giving a prime environment for things like yeast to thrive within the fissures and can make things much worse. Instead she prescribed lotriderm, I haven't had blood for a week now.

If you see blood go get it checked out! Could be something more serious, bright red = hemorroid, anal fissure, or polyps, darker red/brown = problem further up the tract.
