i just started making one. considering independent_thinker's 6-wk green smoothie challenge at pioneer thinking discussion board, im 2-day late already and my first smoothie isnt so perfect. my "frozen fruit" isn't frozen, less than a cup, and like the pear that i also put in (with the washington apple), isn't ripe yet. also, the romaine lettuce i added is like a week-old already from the fridge! haha! so i added 4 cubes of ice and a few teaspoons of honey! :D (and some cinnamon too!)

my green smoothie looks fitting for a christmas theme actually, coz of the red bits from the apple peel mixed in the green puree! (it's 12 midnight and just felt too lazy already to peel it, i also wanted to get the fiber from the peel.) but it tastes like a normal fruit shake. :D

anyway, thanks IT for sharing this! it's my first time to try it and i loved it! count me in to your challenge!

Adding fat seems to be VERY important for absorbing all "the good stuff" in vegetables and fruits:

http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB1154...MjkxOTIyWj.html

Im going to try with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and see how that goes

ooohhh good idea! I add some organic peanut butter and some organic low fat yogurt in mine, and its DELICIOUS! Try it sometime! :D

I'm glad you're doing the smoothies, but I'm sorry you're feeling discouraged! :( Everything in your smoothies sounds excellent except for the cantaloupe. There's a phrase, "Eat a melon alone or leave it alone." Melon's do not combine well with other foods - even other fruits. They're an odd fruit - I actually can't eat them - they make my stomach hurt really bad. No other food affects me that way!

It's very possible that my face did break out more when I started the smoothies, but I honestly don't remember - I just know that it took a few weeks before my breakouts stopped. It makes sense though that you could possibly break out a little more, as your body may be expelling toxins. Regardless, they are so healthy for you - I'd keep it up and see what happens. Keep me posted! :)

Awesome! I hope they go well for you!!

I just made my first one.

2 apples, 2 bananas, 2 lemons, broccoli, carrots & coliflower + 4 cups pf water. It tasted a bit strange, I wouldn't say it was disgusting but not that nice either. I'm not the sort of person who cares too much about the taste too much anyway, I just down it cos theres loads of goodness there.

It made about 1.5 litres of the stuff ! Stuck the rest in the fridge for tomorow morning wake up juice!

Any ideas to improve the taste? (might add spinach & lettuce next time).

Good for you for making your first smoothie! Actually though, broccoli, carrots & cauliflower are not considered leafy greens. They are vegetables and some say they should never be eaten with fruits, as they don't combine well. (Edit: I now believe that as long as you don't have digestive issues, it's okay to combine fruits and veggies - just make sure you're still getting a good amount of leafy greens in your smoothies!). Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, kale, chard, arugula - anything that looks leafy (for example, instead of the carrot, you could eat the carrot "tops"), combines great with fruit! This is how chimpanzees eat in the wild - they'll grab a banana and wrap it with a leafy green. I'd suggest the basic recipe with maybe a handful of spinach or baby greens - both of these have a rather mild taste. You can then gradually start adding 2 handfuls of greens. Hope your next one tastes better! :)

Made a smoothie. It looked like vomit. So I added peanut butter and honey to make it taste better but it still looked like vomit. After a while it began to taste like vomit. Ick. Try again tomorrow. . . .

Taylor, I'm glad you're going to try it again. It can take some experimenting in the beginning. I'd recommend sweet fruits. Maybe try 2 bananas or 2 pears, with either frozen peaches or frozen pineapple - something sweet. Go light on the greens since you're just starting out - just a small handful. I'd use a tender, mild tasting green like baby greens or baby spinach. Add a little cinnamon, honey or vanilla flavoring. Hope it works out better for you the next time! :)

That's part of the fun, in my opinion...the experimentation. Sometimes I'll make something so horrible but I can't help but laugh at how bad it turned out.

LOL! That's awesome!! hahaha  I definitely made a couple really nasty ones in the beginning - I couldn't bear to waste them though, so I'd add a bunch of water and just chug it down! haha

Yayy! Made a good one. This time I put in 1 cup of water, about 1 cup of Romaine Lettuce, One banana (peeled), one peach (no skin), one kiwi (no skin), and a handful of strawberries (with the tops cut off). I should have added just a little bit more water and blended a bit longer because the consitency was is a little bit chunky, but it's edible this time. It made about two cups and after drinking one I can save another for my snack this afternoon. Great idea!

2nd one was tasted better.

2 apples, 2 bananas, 2 lemons, spinach, kale, bag of mixed leafy stuff, 3 cups water and strawberries. That made about 2 litres! Next time i'm going to half everything, because that 2 litres will only last 24 hours.

I might sneak some Coconut Oil in next time aswell

I actually heard recently that they can last for up to 3 days - seems a little long though. I'm happy that your smoothie tasted better! Sounds like a great combination of fruits and greens. I think adding coconut oil would be great!

I have to say this one is my favorite. It's more of a brighter, lime green. It was also simple to make. I took 1.5 cups of water, 1.25 cups of Romaine Lettuce (ya I know I've got to get some more leafy greens), two bananas and two kiwis. I blended for about a full minute. You can't even tell there's lettuce in it! I made just under four cups.

Just thought I'd share and say that I made my first green smoothie this morning using bannana, pineapple, frozen mango, spinach and water. It had a neutral taste so I guess I should get something like cinnamon to spice it up.

Someone asked about growing wheatgrass. I've done it before, if I remember right I got a kit off of wheatgrasskits.com and grew a tray of wheatgrass. It was really easy, they give you directions, soil, fertilizer, seeds, a tray. It was easy and after a week or so a good bit of grass is ready to harvest. But I didn't keep it up cause that stuff just tastes bad!

Wow independent thinker, you are amazing. Full of encouragement and replying to every single person that has posted so far. I sure don't have that kind of patience =)

My question isn't completely on topic, but does anyone have some soup recipes that are easy to make? I'll try anything that isn't tomato or potato based, even though I've never made a soup before.

Hmm... you could try things like vegetable broth, leafy greens, avocado, celery, onions, garlic, tahini... This is what Frederic Patenaude and Dr. Joel Fuhrman refer to as a "blended salad." They're actually a step up from the green smoothies. :)

That's so great! One thing though, carrots don't combine well with fruit since they're a vegetable. Leafy greens are the exception, but hey, I'm glad you're liking the smoothies and are being creative with them! :)

so I shoulnd't add carrots? is that bad?:o

Independent Thinker - Heyyyyy man. I think you got confused about the whole food combining thing. It has to do when your food is in solid form, not blended up into pure liquid. When you blend things into liquids the rules of the game change. FOR EXAMPLE: Watermelons are best eaten alone, this is true. But in a smoothie, it's all water based medium anyways so the extra water from the melon is going to be very negligible. When you're blending all these ingredients, you're partially breaking down the walls of starches, fibers, etc. Basically "predigesting" everything before you put it down your mouth, so it's a lot easier to digest regardless of what you put in.

topical:

tea tree oil soap.

qh mint julep mask.

hydrogen peroxide for occassional spot treatment.

shaving for exfoliation.

internally:

fish oil, 3g daily.

Totally. I can never waste fruit or vegetables. I just have to believe that even though it tastes bad, at least it will have some redeeming nutritional values.

That reminds me, has anyone tried a Pluot before? It's a plum/apricot hybrid...god I hated it, but I choked it down anyways hating every bite a little more than the last. At least I can say I tried something new.
