Arghh, I've been diagnosed with it. For the first time in a while I was a little optimistic when the dermatologist told me to get Nizoral 2% cream. My skin was getting a lot better and within 5 days I only had slight scar (i dunno what to call it) after overcoming it.

Problem is that it's back now and pissing me off.

What have you guys tried?

I'm trying to steer clear of steroid creams, although my dermatologist said that 1% hydrocortisone is fine for the face. I tried apple cider vineger, I think it makes my face dry and worse. I'm going to not use it for the next nights and simply use the nizoral to see it in action.

Any ideas?

I'll copy/paste what I told another guy on here:

Forget about the hydrocortisone and use an anti-micotic like Nizoral or Canespor for 4 weeks. Sometimes a cure with oral antimicotics like itraconazole or fluconazole can help (I had best results with the latter, no side effects with a 15 days cure which made the s.d. relatively better after 5 months).

Just keep in mind that it is a cronic condition.

Well I've heard that Benzoyl Peroxide is good for this type of thing. So I purchased a 2.5% water based gel yesterday. I'm going to continue to use the Nizoral and see if I get any benefits but as I have acne, I will use this every morning to help them. (it did very little before to help cure) But hopefully the use of the BP will help in the curing process.

Any thoughts?

I'm open to hear more thoughts on this? Maybe we can make this a thread about users personal cures to Seb Derm.

Problem there is that there isn't a definitive cure...I tried many many creams and did lots of derm visits but they all said that it's cronic and I should get over it...mine's not very noticeable so I don't really care

But please ask for the oral antimicotic from your doctor it works wonders

I have a heap of scaly dry skin, is it best to peel it off?

I'm thinking of washing my face with head and shoulders which has been recommended by many people on these forums, from reading up on other threads. I've done this before and it basically peels off all the scaley skin and makes my face even redder then it was before, is it a good idea to do this?

There's a new non-steroid cream that was recently released for SB call PROMISEB. Started using it about 2 months ago and have noticed my nose getting much better with less irratiation.

http://www.promiseb.com/

Check it out.

Nizoral and Steiprox. Alternate them, that's the key. I also use polytar shampoo in between. works for me.

by the way these are the shampoos. I didnt really have a dandruff problem, i got the redness/rash on the face all of a sudden last year. still the doc said use the shampoos. i use them once a week, wash my hair with them and also use them as a face wash in the shower. It works. I have had the odd reoccurance but it's was reduced so much (bit of redness in eyelid area) and lastes only a day or so. To me that is good.

I've had seb derm for a ten years. Stay away from steriods, unfortunate for me I didnt. Each year it got worse and covered more of my face. In the past year my face began to sting when I sweat. This never happened the first 9 years. It is now much more controlled.

I like sulfur or sulfur/salicylic based cleansers. I'd recommend Sebulex shampoo. I use the foam from shampooing on my face. I use to use a sulfur cleanser from philosophy that has been discontinued. I haven't tried sulfur masks. They maybe useful if used once a week.

Anti-fungal shampoos like nizoral, selsun blue, head&shoulders will loose the effectiveness over time. If you use them dilute them and rotate them. I found these too drying or irritating.

I haven't used coal tar like the guy from Ireland, his skin looks pretty good, I may try it.

In addition to any product for dandruff you can try products for cradle cap like Mustela Shampoo,
which has salicylic acid and Climbazole (which is and anti-fungal).

Avoid putting anything on your face containing oil or fatty acids this will increase malassezia.
