  1. Closed Comedones..Please Help!!!

Hi everyone, I'm a 21 years old female who suffers from the worst type of acne in my opinion. Each one of my cheeks have at least 40 closed comedones (clogged pores/ Whitehead and blackheads) mainly whiteheads. I have had them for about a year and they don't form a head to become a pimple nor do they go away. I have combination skin and tend to get oily on my T-zone, this is my only form of acne besides of course the once cyst every month around my cycle. If I squeeze them hard white stuff comes out for some and some nothing comes out. For those that do come out will refill a few days later. I don't have any on my chin or forehead only on my cheeks. I'm a picker and I can't help not touching them which leaves my skin with scabs and hyperpigmentation. I finally decided to see a dermatologist and she diagnosed me with clogged pores (closed comedones) like I thought. She gave me Benzoyl peroxide 2.5% with Clindamycin lotion in the morning and Tretinoin gel .05% at night for two months. I'm on my seventh week now and still no improvement at all. This is what's happening so far which is scaring me.. Some comedones are becoming pustules, huge, red and painful... I thought this was good because this means that they are leaving my skin but wait for this, after the inflammation is gone and everything is calm I come to see the comedone still there, which means that this comedone basically got inflamed only to return as soon as the inflammation was gone. I have noticed this happen on a couple of them and that just drive me crazy after I had hope in the Tretinoin to solve the problem. Note: Using the tretinoin I had no new acne or comedones at all, just some of my OWN comedones inflamed. Also since starting the tretinoin I stopped picking my face. If anyone knows what the hell is my skin going through or is going through this right now or have gone through it please please please tell me what you did and what exactly is happening and if this is normal. Shouldn’t my skin be starting to show some improvement on seven weeks of tretinoin? My regime: Daytime- Cleanse with Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser Apply Clindamycin lotion and Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5% Moisturize with Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion Night time- Cleanse with Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser Wait 30 min then apply a pea size Tretinoin Gel .05 Wait 30 min then Moisturize with Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion PS. The picture looks better than real life.
  2. Hi. I've been suffering from these strange bumps on my cheeks and chin for a month and half now, I went to the dermatologist and he said they were closed comedones and suggested extracting them with a needle, but I'm a bit wary of it scarring since it bled (pictures included), so I only asked him to do few and then decide whether to proceed or not. The problem is, he picked at them with he needle. He didn't make an opening and didn't squeeze anything like some videos I've seen online. He also prescribed me cetaphil face soap, derma-T (clindamycin phosphate) and antibacteria cream for at night. Is this the kind of procedure to treat these bumps? Will it scar my face? And all in all should I go back to the derm or find another one?
  3. Clogged Pores

Hey guys, So I'm about 6 weeks on the regimen now, and it's really helped stop the inflamed acne. In the last 2 weeks, I've only had one inflamed spot. I do, however, have a lot of clogged pores on the right side of my cheek, and a few on the left side, and one of them seems to be turning into an inflamed pimple. Are all of these clogged pores going to turn into inflamed acne? I just really don't want to go through another break out, I thought I was done with those after 4 weeks in, when I broke out the worst. Is there anything I can do to unclog the pores before they become inflamed, like maybe using the AHA? I really want to exfoliate or something. My skin is super flaky, by the way, so maybe that's a problem? Or I'm thinking maybe my hair gel is getting near the edge of my cheek and clogging up that area.
  4. acne , clogged pores :(

    From the album eva

Ahh, do not know how to anymore deal with this skin. Recently got this clogged pores I have used so many products, but nothing really works for me. clindamycin, differin as well. Does anybody have the same issue? please let me know how you deal with it. :):( Blessing to you all :)
  5. Has anyone tried doing photodynamic therapy for comedonal/non inflammatory acne?? Or for cystic acne, but maybe noticed any closed comedones go away as well? I'm seriously looking into it, but I don't want to make my condition worse. Any help is appreciated!
  6. I've been dealing with progressively worsening acne for about a year now. I'll get the occasional blemish on my forehead, but there's always a clump on both of my cheeks. It's always worse on the right cheek, not sure if that's a factor but I thought I'd mention it. I'm at the point in my acne journey where I've tried everything. Essential Oils, Natural Remedies, Skincare Products, Weekly $100 Facials, EVERYTHING, yet nothing has helped. I'm wondering if there's potentially a hormonal imbalance? My mom suffered from severe acne, as well as my older brother. Has birth control helped anybody in similar situations? If so, which ones? I read the best are Yasmine, Yaz, Ortho Cyclen and Diane-35, any particular ones you'd recommend? Or any other suggestions,- honestly, I have no idea what to do at this point.
  7. I've been using the acne regimen for nearly 8 weeks now and i'm still breaking out - is this normal? It isn't as excessive as during month 1 but i am still getting the same old whiteheads on my t zone area (i.e. forehead, especially my chin and cheeks) . will these whiteheads eventually stop and why am i getting them might i ask? Also, this treatment made me considerably darker? is this normal? I feel so uncomfortable touching my skin because the texture is quite rough and scaly? should i use the AHA for this? Also, some spots have stayed the same old size for weeks, why do some take so long to disappear?
  8. Annual Fall/Winter Breakout

Hey all, EDIT: Preface: I have decided to change this topic into a cumulative, experiment report. In this topic, I have characterized Cyclic Fall/Winter Acne (the FW Cycle) as a moderate/severe acne break out cycle that occurs durring the Fall/Winter Season. This topic and report is devoted to finding the nature of and a possible, effective treatment for a reccuring acne symptom, the FW Cycle. In this report, I (and perhaps any willing volunteer acne.org-board-members) will propose and test treatments for this type of acne cycle. The purpose of this report is to: -log the results of experiments that will be proposed, discussed, and conducted in this message board topic. -and, hopefully, ultimately find a way to cure the FW Cycle. The results and conclusions are placed at the end of this post. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm starting to break out massively again but I think I'm beginning to see a pattern. I'm looking to see if anyone else is on the same boat as I am; and if there are people like me, maybe we can pin point a cause and find a way to solve this stupid problem for ever. :] I've been experiencing major breakouts during this time of year (Late Fall/ Early Winter) for the past couple of years (prior to 3 years, I generally experienced very mild acne). The pattern is as follows: -I start/continue to break out (whiteheads, pustules, some nodules and cysts) massively during the months of: Oct, Nov, Dec -New pimples/cysts/pustules stop forming but scabs/dark patches of skin remain on my face during the months of: Jan, Feb, Mar -I have very clear skin approximately during the months of: Apr through Sept -and the cycle repeats. This info may be useful: I am a 20 y/o asian male in college. I live in new england where the seasons change drastically. as mentioned before, prior to 3 years (before starting college), I generally experienced very mild acne and was relatively clear - even during winter. Also, during the clear phase, my skin is oily - especially during the summer; yet I do not break out at all (or have one or 2 minimal pimples). Unfortunately I did pick/mess with my face previous years (resulting in a bit of scaring last year). This year I'm trying not to mess with it at all. I want to rule out: -stress as I am equally as stressful during both fall and spring semesters; -food as I try to be as healthy as humanly possible all year round; -the cold since Jan/Feb is as cold if not colder than Dec (although this does not rule out the changing of the climate from warm to cold) [i say "want to rule out" because I can't totally be sure of it..] I did not keep good records of these patterns until last year. -------------------------------------------------------------------- So if your symptoms are similar please feel free to comment. In fact, I would really appreciate it! I am curious as to and would like to hear about: -If there are Similarities and/or Differences between my situation and yours. (ie. how long ago did you first experience this cycle, severity, time frame) -And what you've done/tried out to stop this vicious cycle -Theories as to what you may attribute this cycle to -And any other comments/questions you may have Please post in detail; I'm trying to understand all I can about this situation. I feel the more we know the closer we are to solving this problem once and for all. Together maybe we can find the cause(s) and figure a way to stop this affliction once and for all. Thats all for now, Thanks!! CM :] ps. Will update more if I get responses from people with similar experiences. pps. I originally posted this topic in the severe acne section thinking that Pustules were Nodules. EDIT: Please reply in the format listed above; makes it easier for me to see/log stuff; Thx! :] EDIT: Changed topic into report. Pre-face added. -------------------------------------------------------------------- This section will be devoted to theories and corresponding experiments: Format is as follows: Experiment # a) Theory b) Experiment Details c) Conclusion d) Other Comments e) Contributor Experiment 1: a)Lack of Hydration b)Drink 6 full cups of water every day, Cetaphil 15 SPF Moisturizer every morning c)-Still Testing- d)-Still Testing- e)Cookey Monster Experiment 2: a)Poor Diet b)Eat healthy; avoid fast food c)-Still Testing- d)-Still Testing- e)Cookey Monster
  9. Hi im 16 and recently I've been getting really bad acne. It's mostly redness and hyperpigmentation with the occasional whiteheads. I got on Epiduo and took it for 2 months but didn't notice any effect, it was staining my clothes and my bedsheets, and was really annoying and depressing to use. I researched online and saw that Tea Tree Oil was good for my type of acne. I've used it for a couple days now, and the redness seems to be slightly better although I have more whiteheads. im also taking proderma 100mg every night. I'd like to know your opinion on the matter: should I use Epiduo or Tea Tree Oil? Which is best for redness and hyperpigmentation? It's really bad and I'm kinda desperate for a solution...
  10. Hi guys, my skin was clearing up, and now im literally a pimple face, I'm embarssssed to go out in public natural, I can't even look at my self, and it's at the point where I don't even want my parents or siblings to see me without makeup, yes it's that bad, and I can't see a dermatologist, don't ask why, but I have been growing these whiteheads that turn into cystic all over my face, it won't stop, and I've tried popping them and they turn into open wounds, and they just regrow all over no matter what I do, anyone know what it is? And I don't pop all of them but when I do, they stay there, hey not go away, be tried so many creams, antibiotics, face wash/mask, or even nothing to see what my skin needs and It just won't stop, it's so embarsssing I want to cry. eVeryone in family has perfect clean skin, for when they see mine, everyone comments on it, literally feel like trash, I'm already ugly and now acne is added to it, everyone I know has glowy perfect skin without makeup, except me, nothin works no me, itjust gets worse, if u knowwhat it is, please tell me, help Bc I've been so depressed. Thank you
  11. Hi guys, So I'm almost 4 weeks on using benzoyl peroxide once a day in the morning, for mild acne. I started with 10%, but for almost 3 weeks, I've been on 2.5% lotion, which I'm pretty sure has a moisturizer in it, as I don't seem to get dry from this one. I also use a clean and clear cleanser in the morning and at night. I thought that the benzoyl peroxide was working, because the acne I've been getting hasn't typically been as inflamed, as I used to mostly just get inflamed pustules. But I still always have one thing on my face, like a smaller pustule or papule, as well as a number of white heads, usually around my mouth where I break out the most. I feel like at almost 4 weeks, I shouldn't be getting new slightly inflamed blemishes, so I don't know if I should give up on this treatment and try to get a prescription. I thought this would be enough for me, as I have mild acne, but it's very stubborn, and it's primarily hormonal. New blemishes just show up every few days, and just when I think I'm finally clearing, so it's very discouraging. Do you think that also using the benzoyl peroxide at night would be helpful, so I'd be using it twice a day, and leaving it on over night? I try staying away from junk food and washing my face towel and pillow case frequently, maybe I'm touching my face too much? I do use a concealer sometimes for really red spots, but as a guy I'd rather not get dependent on make up. I also seem to break out more after shaving, but my shaving cream is made for sensitive skin, so I'm not sure what I should change about my shaving. Should I maybe try using a higher percentage BP like 5%?
  12. Hi guys, So I've had pretty mild acne on my face, and more severe on my shoulders and back. For my face, I've been using benzoyl peroxide for around 3 weeks. I started with about a week and a half of using 10%, but then realized that concentration was probably way too high. During that week, I was breaking out pretty bad. I then switched to 2.5%, and my face had calmed down considerably for almost a week, with only one pimple. But the last few days, I've been having a lot of whiteheads pop up, on my chin especially, with some red bump acne as well. Is this a purge? I thought I had purged in the beginning when I was using 10% and broke out. Is it normal to have multiple purges? The only way my acne has improved is that I'm not getting large inflamed pustules anymore, as that was the usual acne I had. Now I just have way more white heads, and the red bumps acne, which don't hurt, I don't know if I'm developing cysts or something. The white heads also keep coming back after they heal. I want to think it's a purge and I should push through it, but I'm not sure. As for my shoulder and back acne, I've been using 10% benzoyl peroxide for a few weeks, with no improvement. Before that, I had used salicylic acid for like 6 months, with no improvement. Is it time for me to give up on using benzoyl peroxide?
  13. Hey everyone, So I have been on the Pill (Gedarel 20 to be precise, it's a fairly new pill and a low dose oestrogen one) for about 8 months now. I started taking it merely because my last pill gave me bad side effects, so my doctor never prescribed per se for my acne. However, miraculously, after the first day of taking it my skin was clearing! A week later I had no new pimples! However, fast forward to about 2 months ago and I started getting papules on my cheeks (just about one a week max), they never bothered me at first but then recently they became frequent - like one a day frequent. And today, I have the first nodule in 8 months. I am a relatively healthy person: I eat healthy, hardly any junk food, I drink 2+ litres of water a day, I take vit E, D and zinc supplements, I exercise every day, and I try not to pick unless they're blackheads. I also don't have PCOS. Do any 'science-y' people know what is going on internally in me?? How can I go from crystal clear to pimpley again despite always taking the pill religiously and never skipping? Even though I am on hormones are my hormones still out of whack? Basically, I am due at the dermatologist in the beginning of July after waiting SINCE AUGUST LAST YEAR (I'm in the UK so it's the NHS). I am scared they will reject me for roaccutane because this pill has clearly improved my skin and if they accept me for it, I am scared I have some hormonal issue which will mess with the effectiveness of roaccutane. Thanks in advance, and here's a photo of the blinder growing on my cheek...
  14. Hi! So sometimes I get these tiny, under the skin, skin-colored whiteheads that are really impossible to extract without severely irritating the surrounding skin (I know this from experience which has caused me to never touch my face anymore lol). In this stage, they don't bother me because they are barely visible and I have suffered from severe acne in the past so I know how much worse I can have it. HOWEVER, over time (sometimes weeks or months), some of them will surface and turn into these HUGE, red, swollen pimples that eventually come to a nice head, but take a few days, look horrible, and leave some red marks behind. I was wondering if anyone has a similar experience and can recommend treatment for when they are in that tiny stage before they become big. I usually just left them alone (other than my nightly regimen of retin-a). Today, I started spot treating them in the morning with salicylic acid using a q-tip. Do you think this will help? Any other ideas? Thanks!
  15. Whitehead disaster

I have Whiteheads on my chin. One day I decided to squeeze them. The next morning I got this brown bump and i tried scratching. Then I tried letting it be and didn't scratch. A couple days ago i started scratching and it turned like red and brown and right now it's brown with a white spot inside.
  16. help! :(

  17. Hey guys so I've been struggling with this since High School and can't seem to get rid of it. Every pore on my torso is raised and clogged. These pics show just my chest shoulder area but it looks like this all over. It seems to have spread and no demotologist will tell me what it actually is. I'd appreciate some suggestions.
  18. Please help. I've had these bumps on my forehead for a year and theres nothing i could do to get over it. i dont know what to do anymore and this is my biggest insecurity. please help me i just want a smooth forehead
  19. Hi there you guys, I'm in serious need of help. I don't know what to do about my acne problems anymore... I've been dealing with this for 7 years and am getting seriously depressed because nothing seems to be working. If you know something that could help me (anything!) please say so, I'll try it all! INFO: I basically have acne all month long but it gets worse right before my period. I have blackheads all over my nose and cheeks and when i extract them, they come back the next day. I have small pimples all over my my face, specially on my forehead, temples and cheeks, which are "underneath the skin" and usually go away on their own. Apart from that, it's not rare for me to get a few whiteheads around my face or hairline during the month. Sometimes I also get red pimples of big dimension that seem to be infected and hurt when I touch them. Finally, I have lots of pih marks on my face as a result of these whiteheads and infected pimples. These marks form as soon as the acne appears and whether I pop them or not. I think it's also important to mention that I rarely pop pimples and usually just apply ice or leave it be as soon as it starts acting up and that I was diagnosed with PCOS 3 years ago. Please if anyone has dealt with this or something similar or knows anyone who has, please suggest me something that has helped. It would mean the world to me!
  20. New and need advice!

Hi y'all! I'm 25 and in the past two or so months my acne has gotten worse but only in a specific place. I've exclusively been breaking out in clusters of whiteheads on my chin an no where else. I started taking zinc, omega-3, and vitamin A daily but I've only seen a slight improvement. Any advice?
  21. What angers me most about acne is all the missed opportunities it caused me to have during my teen years that I will never get back. I had no friends and never did anything exciting as a teen because I lived in isolation not by choice. I'm 21 now and have pretty much clear skin and I feel like I'm years behind everyone else because it socially stunted me and it's hard to start a social life from scratch as you get older.
  22. white heads!!

i am 15 and i get a lot of white bumps on my nose. i dont know what to do to them. i have an (SUPER) oily skin. i tried to pick some of them and it has some white hard crystal inside (oil). please help as a teenager my face gets me really conscious. please help i just want a clear face
  23. Hi! im a 19 year old female who's been dealing with severe acne since the age of 11 or 12. I've tried absolutely everything to get rid of it or at least lessen the severity of it- Dermatologist visits, diet change, exercise and lifestyle changes in general, topical and oral medications prescribed by dermatologist, OTC ointments and cleansers and masks and scrubs and exfoliants and on the spot treatments , I drink a ton of water every day, change my bed sheets and pillow cases almost daily, and am sure not to touch my face. I have become extremely self conscious of my skin and my skin condition is on my mind literally all hours or the day and I know stressing about it doesn't help. I wake up every day with more bumps under my skin or another whitehead. Every. Single. Day. I have no confidence because of my acne .i cannot leave my house without putting makeup on, which is only about twice a week. (I wear makeup that's safe for acne prone skin and all products I use are safe for acne prone ,sensitive skin, and I am extra careful to be sure to get all makeup off as soon as I get home). Even though makeup covers redness and discoloration and the reddish/purpleish scarring from the acne, it obviously doesn't cover texture. My skin is just very bumpy. It's like bumpy "blind pimples" under my skin that haven't come to a head yet so they arent whiteheads. I notice it especially when I'm examining my face in the mirror upclose and with my phone's flashlight on my face to really see everything. If I pick and pick and try hard enough to pop them ,they'll pop but it'll also leave a nasty bloody, wet scab from picking it to a raw pulp which is even harder ,sometimes impossible ,to cover with makeup since it leaks through makeup (luckily I've been able to control my urge to pick and pick and pick at my face lately) But my skin is just bumpy and with makeup you can still see the bumpy texture. The texture I think even looks worse with makeup on. What is this? They're mostly on my chin and jawline and cheek area. I do a microdermabrasion face mask once or twice a week, or basically whenever I wear makeup after I take it off at the end of the day. The mask I use is from a company called "e-ra organics" I think. And it comes in a small white bottle labeled "revive microdermabrasion". It exfoliates with the beads in it and makes sure all makeup and dirt is out of my skin On top of my generally bumpy skin texture I still get those red bumps up on my skin that aren't quite a head yet but aren't below the surface anymore. I usually end up popping them anyway as it's easier to pop and if done right don't leave scab. but when I do pop anything I make sure I use a clean needle and tissue/toilet paper and clean hands and I wash my face after wards. The condition of my skin is very frustrating but I'm really concerned mainly now about the bumpy texture. what is it? What can I do about it? Any products to help my skin texture ?
  24. Hi there, I am 26 years old. All my life I had fairly clear skin. No acne but pimples every once in a while. I also was a bad picker so a pimple would turn into worse! My skin would also get bad when I got stressed - possibly because to relieve stress I would pick at my face. However, I just stopped taking birth control pills. I was taking them for 10 years and decided to switch to a copper IUD. Everything was okay at first. Although it was a very stressful time for other reasons so my skin wasn't great. Then I went on a big trip. I moved to Australia for 6 months and am currently doing 3 months in Southeast Asia. In Australia my skin started getting really bad. Little bumps everywhere. After doing some reading I believe they were whiteheads. They would never form a head. Never be that big. But I could pop them and get puss out of them. However if I did that it usually led to bigger pimples from my face being irritated. I am unsure if it is the hormonal changes but it did start about 7 months after going off of birth control. And now it has been a year and it's still bad. Maybe it's from sweating more than I'm used to in hot climates? I have switched up all my skin care products and hair care one by one to see if anything helps. It doesn't seem to be the case. My skin also really breaks out during my periods which it never used to. But when it does that they are more cyst like. At at this time it is really only the right side of my face that is really bad. Although the left still has a lot of red marks from the past (seems to take forever to heal!). I have tried to not pick and left my skin alone for weeks to no avail. Then get frustrated with the bumps and try to pop them. It's so terrible! I don't even want to be seen. I have stopped wearing makeup in hopes that it would help clear it up and I feel hideous. Any ideas would help! I will see a dermatologist when I get home but that is months away. Thanks in advance.
  25. Hello. I am currently using Obagi tretinoin cream 0.1%. I have been using for a week now and this is how things are going so far Before trying out this product, I have managed to clear 70% of my severe closed comedones. I only have a few left on my cheeks and jawlines. I decided to try out this cream because I heard it's very good to clear closed comedones and it peels your skin to get rid of acne scars and hyperpigmentation. However, I have noticed it irritated my skin over night and I woke up with about 5-10 little whiteheads on my cheek. I also have 2-3 inflamed pimple on random parts of my face. I wonder if the cream did this because I haven't broken out these past few weeks. Please let me know if I should keep using it or not. I used salicylic acid products before and it worked really well but didn't get rid of my closed comedones. I still don't really trust this Retin-A cream. It peeled my skin for the first 2 days and then it stopped and broke me out. Please help me. Thank you so much.
