  1. Hello. First of all, don't get too excited if you're in a similar situation to me and were hoping this post would hold the fix for long-term (Ro)accutane damage. I just wanted to express my situation and see if anyone can help. I'm bored of reading depressing no-way-out answers and I refuse to give up and stop trying to fix myself. I'm also not inviting those who say the side effects aren't caused by this drug - I am 100% sure, and have read enough posts from others to know that Accutane isn't simply 'out' of your system after a month. I've read several theories into why things like IBS, Erectile Dysfunction and knee problems can occur months or years after stopping treatment. I'm talking about the liver storing the high-levels of Vitamin A, Accutane staying in the colon, and even something - which if it's true means only bad news - to do with DNA change and 'Telomere' shortening, which means a slow but sure decrease in health(This has been written by Nathan Carr, who you may of heard of). But I'm not writing to find out which of these theories, if any, is true. I want to see if anyone can actually give good advice on supplements/diet, or whatever else, to repair damage from this poison. Below, I will list the details of when I took this drug and what side effects I have + how I cope with life. One last thing - Anyone saying that these side effects are rare, i.e 1%, forget it. 1% reported. Since taking this drug, my life has been limited and difficult. I'm not in that 1% statistic because I haven't reported it directly to the manufacturer. I expect the figure is a lot higher. As I said, side effects can come on AFTER taking this, so people could be ignorant to the cause. However, I know better, and after watching my health drop dramatically while/after taking Accutane, I can firmly say it's the cause. Let's begin ... Basics: I'm 21 at the end of this month. It's now 5 years since I touched Ro-accutane (Ro-accutane is just the British name for it). I took it from December 2005 - May 2006. I was meant to finish in June, but stopped due to feeling very depressed/suicidal (because of the drug). My problems are below... - Dry Eyes (Severe) - E.D/ Low Libido (Started last year and has gone on consistently since) - Hair-loss (Including eyebrows, facial hair 'gaps' and body hair) - Slow Healing (Shaving is a pain now - No, it's not my technique) - Lack of sebum (oil) - Brain Fog/ Memory problems - Somewhat minor - Anxiety (mainly because of the other side effects - i.e. dry eyes causing me to feel embarassed about eye contact) - Excessive hair (Not related to head, but my beard grows high up on cheeks and even on the outside of my nose) - I believe I look older than I should due to lack of oil - Joint/Muscle problems - Aches/ Slow recovery - Excessive sweating.. Terrible if I go running at the gym, for example. - Dry mouth - Nosebleeds more than I should - Fatigue - Overall depression and confusion (*Rhetorical question* Is this a direct symptom or am I like it because of all the other side-effects stressing me out?) That's what I can think of for now. Of course, I wasn't told about half of these being a possibly problem and I was told any side-effects will be temporary. I was 15, so I had no reason not to trust the Doc's word. I've tried lots of different supplements (a lot of which I still take just incase they are helping/slowing down the problems) including Omega 3, Biotin, B-Complex, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Collagen, Hyaluronic acid, Aloe Vera Juice, MSM, Colostrum, Garlic, Acetyl L-Carnitine, Acetyl L-Cysteine, Milk Thistle, Dandelion Root, Quercetin, Tumeric. So, yeah, I've tried a lot of things. The Milk Thistle and Dandelion Root are recent additions because despite having my liver test results come back as positive, I've heard your liver can still not be functioning correctly and people are given liver tests monthly while taking this drug for a reason, right? I'm starting to eat better foods as this sh*t taught me that Natural is the way to go. I still binge on cakes and that occasionally - Mainly for comfort. I'm average weight and height, but want to cut out processed foods to support my body. I don't want to make this EXTREMELY long, so I'll cut it short. I'm currently seeing a Homeopathy about these problems. And Yes, I know "Science says it's boll*cks", and I don't understand how it's supposed to work, but sometimes you have to think outside the box and give things a go. I don't have high hopes for things getting better these days, but I'm not giving up. There is so much more I could say, but let me know your thoughts. I don't want to hear negative and hopeless responses. What HAS helped you? Acne.org seems to be the biggest place to speak about this, but we NEED the word out, so the 'experts' can do the research instead of hoping for someone else to fix us. Thanks for reading, Indy.
  2. Hi all, I have been using the experience of those on acne.org during my journey and now that I have seen some noticeable results, I thought I should share it with you. Little background about me: 27-year-old female, acne during my teenage years, went on Accutane when I was 17 and acne was gone, mild acne came back during my early 20s but nothing too bad, moderate-severe acne started when I was 25, went on antibiotics for 9 months, I was clear for 6 months but after 6 months it came back even worse. I have tried topical antibiotics, retinoids, salicylic acid, and BP with no improvement. After doing so much research, I decided to the following step by step and saw little improvements with each step: - Eat a strict paleo diet for 1 month, after that, still follow a gluten-free, dairy-free, and alcohol-free diet - Eat more healthy fats (I use cold-pressed coconut oil and olive oil) - Take probiotics (pills and fermented food) - Take digestive enzymes for one month (This made the most difference in my skin) - Take zinc supplements - Take cod liver oil - Take ginger + turmeric tea once a day - Take vitamin D supplements (This made my skin to go from okay to very good!) - Take MRT food sensitivity test and avoid foods that I am sensitive to I started taking these steps in January 2017 and now it is June 2017. I have 2-3 breakouts during my ovulation week and 1-2 breakouts before my period. They are much smaller and less painful that the ones I used to get 6 months ago. Now that I am mostly clear, I am totally fine with drinking a glass of wine once a week or having a cake during a birthday. However, I try to stick to an anti-inflammatory diet as much as I can. Here is my current regiment: - First thing in the morning, take one teaspoon of cod liver oil - At noon, take 44mg of zinc - In the afternoon, take 2200IU vitamin D - Before going to bed, take a potent probiotic As for face wash, I use Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser (I never thought I could use a facewash as gentle as this one!). Two times a week, I exfoliate my face with my Clarisonic. I want to emphasize that if you do intense workouts, you need to be extra careful with your diet because your body needs a lot of nutrients to recover (I can tell you my workout story and how it affected my acne). Also, I would suggest taking blood tests before taking any vitamin or mineral supplements. I was both zinc and vitamin deficient. My nutritionist has been super helpful during this journey. I would highly recommend seeing one if your insurance covers it or if you can afford it.

Won't keep this too formal, but like many of you I tried Accutane, had a few minor side-effects while i was on it, like dry lips and skin, blood noses, dry eyes, soreness after sport, etc. Then when I discontinued Accutane, some of these effects left, but were replaced with other far more insidious side effects. In no particular order these included: -Erectile Dysfunction -Depression -Fatigue -Joint Pain and more injuries -Low Testosterone These are just the core ones. If you have these, it goes on to affect every other aspect of your life, like you become less social, and feel anxiety in social situations. It also means you no longer enjoy things you used to enjoy doing, like sports, especially seeing you’re feeling sore from it and can’t seem to gain strength anyway due to low T, or see the point in studying to do well in University because you don’t know what you want to do anymore, and struggle to picture a future where you are happy and fulfilled. You don’t want to get into a relationship and you don’t feel like you deserve one, especially because you don’t know whether you could physically perform in one, etc, etc. The fact that you don’t see an end in sight to these maladies is what makes the situation seem more hopeless, more despairing, and it is why many people commit suicide, especially in a society that insists in “all in your head” or ”you’re imagining it” “X, Y and Z had it as well and they are fine, so just get over it”. Because on the outside you look the same, people disregard it, and it is only because of the people that lost hope and ended it the only way they knew how that this issue has been acknowledged by the world, but it is still far from accepted. Anyway, luckily a lot of this bullshit for many of you should be over soon (approx 3-6 months) I have come to the conclusion that the long term side effects of Accutane is due to brain damage. The downside to this conclusion is that brain damage can’t be cured. The upside is that the difference between a poorly managed TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), and a well managed TBI are like black and white, and if managed well you will be VERY close to 100%, but poorly managed and you will feel… maybe very similar to how you feel now. These are the symptoms of a TBI Fatigue or lethargy Irritability Depression Anxiety Difficulty falling asleep Feeling “slowed down” Feeling “in a fog” or “dazed” Difficulty concentrating Difficulty remembering becoming fatigued easily; disordered sleep; Headache; Loss of libido, erectile dysfunction; vertigo or dizziness; irritability or aggression on little or no provocation; anxiety, depression, or affective instability; changes in personality (eg, social or sexual inappropriateness); or apathy or lack of spontaneity. If these sound familiar, that not a bad thing. If you found out you are short sighted and needed to wear glasses, then it means now you can wear glasses, so you no longer need to suffer the symptoms of your blindness. Same thing here. You are currently dealing with the symptoms the best you can. However, now knowing what the actual issue is you can treat it the way science has shown it should be treated. The best measurable way to recover from a TBI is to improve neuroplasticity. This has been shown in many other animals as well as humans, and is now becoming a prominent way to treat many mental illnesses. The most conventional way is through “Mindfulness Meditation”, which is a form of meditation where you get comfortable and try to think of nothing for 10-30 minutes a day. This has been shown to promote Neurogenesis/Neuroplasticity1 and this has been shown to help people with suicidality, PTSD, anxiety, addiction and depression, as well as chronic pain, insomnia, and hypertension. The way I’m treating myself is through the nutrition approach. It has been shown that creatine, fish oil, (unheated) extra virgin olive oil, vitamin d, zinc, magnesium, glutamine, taurine all also promote neuroplasticity. The Ketogenic Diet also helps promote Neuroplasticity, and many people who go on that diet who struggle with libido problems and are on antidepressants recover over the months and years they are on that diet. I have been doing these things for the last 5 months, and ahve noticed a great improvement in both my mental and physical health. I'm in a bit of a rush but wanted to get all this out there, so be forgiving of any and all poor formatting. Also challenge this and use what I've found to build up your own theories, and if you agree feel free to find other things we could be doing to promote neuroplasticity and improve our recoveries! Recently took vitamin A 10000 iu vitamin e 400 iu vitamin d3 2000 iu and zinc pciolmnate 50 mg and skin got clear no new pimples but had to stop because my stomach got inflamamted and was worried too many pills a day, well me thinking it was the zinc alone doing the job because i had previously taken vit a and e and nothing but i have new pimples today after stop taking eveyrhting else but the zinc, so now i am back on the vit d 2000 iu and we will see if that was the cure for me in a couple of days hopewfully this goes well guys something was makng my acne better out of all of those .

    I made a log for my progress on saw palmetto (and other anti-androgen herbs) about a year ago, which completely cleared my skin for a while. Over the summer I slowly started breaking out again and changed up my supplement routine a bit in response, but that didn't seem to help. Now, I have been on Yasmin for almost exactly 3 months (finish my third pack at the end of this week) and still haven't seen improvement. I remember how much making my last log helped me through a hard time and thought making a new one would be a good idea. Mainly, I'm going to try reducing/almost completely cutting out sugar/simple carbs in my diet. I already avoid dairy products most of the time (although I was a strict vegan for about a year and it seemed to have no effect on my skin). I occasionally have cheese, which I will not be actively avoiding for this log, but I will be avoiding sugary dairy products like ice cream and chocolate, and pizza (very sad about this). I do eat some wheat and gluten (oatmeal, brown rice, whole grain bread), but I generally avoid simple carbs like white pasta/rice/bread, which I will be rather strict with for this log. I also do not eat any meat (in case that's relevant somehow). I have also started taking 5000iu of vitamin D about every other day/every couple days, which I did not do in the summer (although one winter I took it every day and my skin was possibly the worst it had ever been at that point, if that means anything) I will also continue to track my progress on Yasmin. I will keep the log for three months unless I need to quit earlier for some reason. For anyone else who is trying something similar, I would be happy to have you post in this thread and discuss how it's going so we can support each other As for how my skin is doing starting out at this point, I break out around every week or so. Mostly I've been getting smallish whiteheads/pustules, but I had two deep pimples come up on my chin and one on my cheek over the weekend, which have mostly healed. I am getting another one on my chin now though And I have to say, my skin has actually been worse than it was before I switched to Yasmin. I would have hoped any "initial breakout" would have been over by now, but maybe not. Update 12/22: I have decided to try the "spearmint tea regimen" as well. Starting tomorrow I will be drinking 2 cups per day. I have also recently decided to stop all herbal supplements, at least for a while, because I just don't feel they are helping anymore, and haven't been for a while.
  6. Hello all! I have written my testimony/story for those who want to read it! For those who don't, keep scrolling and I will talk about my cure below I was taking oral medications to treat my acne for about five years. My dermatologist thought it would be okay for me to be on such medications for that long. Somewhere in those five years, there was a time where I didn’t have a period for nine months. My hormones were completely out of order, and after that nine month time frame, I got off Spironolactone in order to try and regulate my body. However, my cycle went absolutely ballistic. I went from having no period, to the heaviest period of my entire life. My body was lost and relied on medication for so long. It tried to regulate itself, but my hormones were completely out of whack. And, you guessed it. After getting off Spironolactone, my acne came back. So, naturally, I was put on another dosage for the next three years. I went through on and off cycles (yet, mostly on) until my freshman year of college. December of 2014, I got off Spironolactone because I thought I had ‘outgrown’ the acne phase. I was clear for a couple of months, but in May of the next year, things took a turn. I started developing deep, cystic acne and it was pretty inflamed. June and July were the worst for my skin. There were some days where I cried. It was SERIOUSLY taking a toll on me, emotionally. My skin was so incredibly bumpy, inflamed, and people even made comments and asked questions about it. One day, I received TWO comments from two older relatives, and these comments were less than 5 minutes apart. It was at church, first thing in the morning, so of course I walked around all day completely paranoid of how I looked. Another time, I was having a great day at work until I heard “Mommy, she has lots of spots on her face,” a little boy said, loudly. It literally ruined my positive attitude for the day, and it’s difficult when you don’t feel confident enough to even look people in the eye. So obviously this was hard for me mentally, and I avoided pictures as much as I could, but I did find a few from this time period that I can share with you guys to show how bad it was. I am wearing foundation in some of them, but you can still clearly see the bumps and cysts that are impossible to cover. Here’s an interesting fact: last summer, my forehead was extremely broken out, but cheeks were clear. This summer, my forehead is clear and all my acne was on my cheeks. Interesting right? Keep in mind, these pictures don’t do it justice; I just completely avoided the camera at this time in my life. They are attached below. It was May when I broke down and cried because I saw my skin starting to break out pretty badly. I was almost 20 years old, why did I have skin problems? Basically everyone I knew had perfect skin. So, I started doing some research. It took me a few months to really perfect this all, as it does for everyone. If you’re going to treat the source and find a holistic cure, you’re going to have to experiment with it and find what works. You may be thinking, “well she probably drank a ton of sodas and ate a ton of candy/chips/processed foods before”. Wrong; I am an athlete, and NEVER touched soda and had a pretty good diet. However, I workout 4-5 times a week, and it was very crucial that I was taking in enough calories in order to put on more muscle mass. Therefore, my breakfast smoothie, at the time, consisted of almond milk, banana, TWO scoops of peanut butter, oats and a vegetable supplement. I was also taking in lots of carbs, such as white rice and wheat toast to pack on some weight! Out of these items, bananas are the only thing I still eat regularly. Why? I explain that below. Now, my skin is looking better and better every week! The bumps and cysts that I used to have are now completely flat due to cleaning up my diet! And WITHOUT an oral medication. My skin is completely smooth, and its amazing to run my fingers over it. I have red marks from my acne, but I have gotten them before, and they will fade. They are not the icepick/boxed scars that leave dents in the skin, which is why I am confident they will fade on their own. Here is what I have learned about my body and my skin the past few months, and what has helped me tremendously: I eliminated gluten: Not only do many people have a gluten-acne connection, but gluten is hard to digest even for those who don’t have an intolerance!! Gluten promotes inflammation, and it WILL wreak havoc on your gut. Ultimately, gluten causes a multitude of problems for lots of people. After taking acne medications for nearly five years, I suspected I have Leaky Gut (the lining of the intestines are damaged, meaning particles of food can literally leak through the holes of the lining and make their way into the bloodstream) and Leaky Gut is a very common cause of skin problems. Gluten will damage the gut even more, and I needed to HEAL my gut, so I avoided it. I eliminated soy: Very controversial. Soy can create an imbalance of hormones= acne. I personally saw a difference after avoiding my vegetable supplement that contained soy. Soy can also wreak havoc on gut. I also eliminated dairy, legumes, refined sugars, processed foods= Dairy has a huge connection with acne, and some people say its because the hormones injected into the animals end up in our bodies when we eat dairy. If you’re going to eat dairy, look for ORGANIC/CAGE FREE/NO HORMONES OR ANTIBIOTICS/ ETC. Peanuts are legumes, and I was eating peanut butter daily. Legumes impair zinc absorption!!! Lots of people take zinc supplements and it clears their acne! Well, stop it from the source. Stop eating legumes so your body can properly absorb zinc in the first place. Refined sugars, processed foods, and even carbs such as rice= insulin spike. I was eating oats and white rice everyday for the calories, and I stopped. “Elevated levels of insulin cause pimples to form. Insulin is a hormone that is released in response to eating, and tells your cells to take in sugar from the blood (glucose) and store it for later use. Insulin levels and blood-sugar levels are closely related (diabetics measure their blood-sugar levels to determine if they need to inject insulin), and blood-sugar levels are controlled directly by what you eat. Look into it. I’m still looking into nuts: Nuts can cause acne for a lot of people. I was drinking almond milk everyday, and didn’t cut it until July. I believe it has made a huge difference. However, I don’t necessarily think it was the almonds, but the INGREDIENTS in the almond milk. It wasn’t an ‘organic’ brand, so there was a ton of krap in it. I wasn’t drinking it for the nutrition, so I thought I may as well drop it and use water instead for smoothies. My smoothies taste the exact same, and my skin has been looking better. We just weren’t meant to take in so many ‘chemicals’/ingredients that are in almond milk. Basically, I was following an anti-inflammatory Paleo diet. I also added lots of fats. GOOD OMEGA-3 FATS ARE ANTIFLAMMATORY AND RESET YOUR HORMONES. For example: I take coconut oil everyday (good source of fats, helps balance hormones, fights bad bacteria in the gut, and skin problems are usually a sign of something wrong in the gut) I also take L-glutamine to support the lining of my intestines and gut everyday, and I now supplement with certain multivitamins that contain extra Vit D, Zinc, Selenium, etc. I believe this has helped a lot, as most people see a huge change with Vit D and Zinc. I eat lots of sweet potatoes as my carb source! Here are a few other benefits of my lifestyle change: 1.) Clear skin with no more medication! 2.) BMs that aren’t uncomfortable (lol sorry, my digestive system is just so much better!) 3.) LOWER blood pressure! 4.) Less body fat/lean physique! And so much more... I believe what we put into our bodies is a TRUE reflection of how we look and feel!! Gluten insensitivities/other internal problems such as Leaky Gut can even cause anxiety and depression, which of course, doctors prescribe pills to treat. I used to make fun of people who had to eat “organic”, but now I love this cure and am trying to spread the word!! Studies on cultures that live a Paleolithic lifestyle show they had CLEAR skin! Our ancestors didn’t have acne, and definitely had less diseases. (The Dietary Cure for Acne by Loren Cordain will cover this, look into it as well.) If you’re reading my post, give this lifestyle change a shot. Any questions?? Typical Day for me: Breakfast-Green smoothie with water, ice, a banana (carbs in the morning, makes smoothie sweet), 2 big handfuls of spinach, (fiber, good for digestion, anti-inflammatory), half avocado, (balance hormones, good source of fats, filling, sweetness) blueberries, (reduces insulin levels!!!, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory), 5-8 grams of glutamine, 1-2 tbsp coconut oil. If this isn't enough, I'll have Sweet Potato Pancakes (literally just 2 eggs and 1 cooked medium sweet potato in the blender to create a batter, fry like a regular pancake) Here is, in a simple form, what I eat: Meals: 1 protein (chicken, fish, turkey, eggs, etc) 1 carb (squash, sweet potato, etc) 1 fat (olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, etc) I basically just focus on whole, REAL foods! It is what our bodies are meant for. Don't overcomplicate it! Address your inflammation from nutrition with WHOLE foods! I do have cheat meals on the weekends and still enjoy myself! You must think of this as a LIFESTYLE CHANGE! I have included some before photos, and one after photo taken this morning. As you can see, my cheeks are now nearly flat, I just have some 'left over acne' that will flake off in the next few days. I have only been doing this for about 2-3 months, and am looking forward to seeing even more progress in the next few months Thanks for reading! I hope this can help others, I had to share what worked for me! UPDATE: The very last photo was taken September 3, 2015! I have been VERY lenient with my diet, but as you can see, my cheek is clear!! Just have some scars left over because my acne was so bad, but I will gladly take scars over inflamed bumps that are impossible to cover. (They will fade btw) Perhaps my body needed some SERIOUS hormone balancing and gut help! I've been enjoying all foods the past few weeks and my skin looks great:) Still being careful, though, and watching what I eat it is a lifestyle change The third photo is showing the same cheek as the last photo!!!!   7. I'm 23, weigh about 125- 130 lbs and am looking for a cod liver oil supplement to take to help with my acne & general health. I stumbled across this one: http://www.seven-seas.com/products/pure-cod-liver-oil-plus-evening-primrose-oil It has added Evening Primose oil, which I know a lot of women have found helpful for their hormonal acne. Do you think it would be a good idea to try this particular supplement, given that both cod liver oil and evening primrose oil is supposed to be effective? Or is it best to stay with pure CLO?
  8. Well, I think I've found it... I think it's finally over! it's been about 2 months, and *no new breakouts*. Absolutely none. I'm... shocked! After all this time, I think I finally found the acne cause and solution, for me. Two months ago, I started taking vitamin D supplements, about 1000IU per day. Nothing else changed: work has been no more or less stressful, my diet hasn't changed, nothing significant in personal life. I just noticed that my skin is always better after getting a little bit of sunshine, so decided to try taking vitamin D... and, voila! My skin has *never* looked better... It actually looks kind of pretty! It's hard to believe it could be so simple, yet it kind of makes sense: I never had acne until moving from Arizona to Seattle, and, it always got worse in the winter. The only other time I had acne in my life was while still living in Arizona, I tried a brief stint of eating a very, very low-fat diet (yes, I was young and foolish), and wearing sunscreen religiously; perhaps since vitamin D is fat-soluble, and I was avoiding the sun, I was just unable to synthesize or absorb it. And, sure enough, once I abandoned the low-fat foolishness, the acne disappeared as well. Until I moved to Seattle, that is, when it returned with a vengeance. The only heavy-duty medications I tried were retin-A for a year, and orthotricyclen for four months. Both were ineffective, unfortunately: the retin-A had absolutely no effect (after a frickin year!!) and on orthotricyclen I still had reliably regular monthly breakouts, plus some in between. I tried eliminating various foods from the diet: chocolate, dairy, peanuts, and citrus, all to no effect. Also, I absolutely don't eat processed foods, and very little sugar; mostly whole foods, lots of veggies, low sugar, lots of fish oils, only grass-fed organic meat when I do eat meat, blah, blah, blah, etc etc, all the usual recommendations. I got extremely sick of claims that acne is punishment for dietary transgressions -- I *don't* eat crap, at all, yet still had acne. Anyway! All this is to say that after 3 years of trial and error, I've been pretty much stumped! Until now... taking vitamin D. It's very weird. It's possible that this one simple thing, vitamin D deficiency, has been the problem the entire time. Wow. It's been about 2 months, so I'm hoping this keeps up. If anything changes, I'll let you guys know, but... so far, so good! If anyone is still trying the litany of various dietary/medical/vitamin tricks, well, don't forget to give this one a try. Not the cause for everybody, I'm sure, but if there are any others out there like me, maybe this will help!
  9. i wanted to post my spiro experience here- and get any feedback on other user's experiences. firstly, ever since i could remember i have had on/off SEVERE acne. all over the face. i could not even put a finger on an area that did not have a bump or red mark on it. I wanted to avoid birth control/ RX routes so i tried every diet (gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian) and supplement/ natural method that i could think of (zinc, vit d, berberine, vit a, etc.) Nothing helped in the slightest bit. I eventualy got tired of all of it and came across spironolactone in my research... saw the general lack of side effects and positive reviews, so i went to a dermatologist, and he prescribed me 50 mg per day and told me i wouldn't see results until 3- 4 months in. He was correct, i started on August 10th and today would be 4 and a half months, where i can say that i am 95% clear, with only 3-4 small spots on my face. However, as i have been taking it tfor some months, i have noticed some side effects and have come across in my research others that have noticed some of the same things: 1) weight gain- i have always generally been a thin person, fluctuating between 110-120 at my heaviest. I have always carried weight in my belly only, where everywhere else stayed lean. However, since i have started taking spiro, I feel like my weight distribution has definitely changed, and i am getting bad stretch marks and cellulite around my butt/thigh region. Because of the diuretic effect, my bloating in my stomach has flattened, however, i am gaining weight on other areas of my body that i have never experienced before. 2) bloated face- i used to get compliments on my defined jawline and thin face, however, spiro has definitely made my face look much rounder and fatter looking 3) bad/tense dreams and longer sleep- since starting spiro, i am getting horrible, vivid dreams every single night. I also have to sleep a lot more on this pill. I used to run perfectly on 7-8 hours, now I need 10-11 hours to function. 4) general anxiety- i have noticed myself getting anxious about things i never used to, snapping at my friends more, and feeling stressed in my day to day life. My theory is that many of these symptoms (weight gain, bloated face, anxiety) are caused by the spike in cortisol that spiro does cause, along with an eventual estrogen dominance due to the suppression of testosterone. That is why i have started to take rhodiola and phosphatidylserine supplements along with my spiro to try to combat some of the effects, but i dont know whether it is placebo or not because i cannot really tell a difference. Has anyone been able to find a solution or can provide expertise for any of these problems?? please let me know, as i am extremely satisfied with the positive aspects, but do not know if down the road i will have to find another acne method.

    Hey all! I'm here on Day Eight. (I thought it was Day Seven, but I guess it's Day Eight) I can't count, apparently. It's a pretty lazy Sunday. Update: My date and I mutually cancelled on one another on Friday. I spent most of Saturday binge eating junk food, so that's not the best for my skin. I ate a lot of potato chips and sweets. I didn't eat any dairy or gluten though (Okay, I ate some Ritz crackers). Oh well, so I'm not being as strict as I'd like, but it'll be just fine! As far as improvements go in this first week, I’m seeing cysts heal a lot quicker, but I’m still getting new ones. I attribute this my sugar intake? Or part of me thinks I have some underlying hormone or health issue. That is no use thinking about without speaking with a doctor. I have a lot of scarring on my neck from old cysts. It’s the majority of the marking on my left and right sides of my neck. The back of my neck is where I’m getting the new cysts primarily. There’s also a new one on my right side, but it isn’t painful. It seems like right when the cysts on one side go down or drain a new one appears on the other side. Kind of frustrating, but this is a process. I’ve been drinking a shit ton of chamomile tea this weekend. Does it do anything? I’m not sure, but it makes me feel mentally better. I’m probably just overcompensating for all the shit I’m eating. This week will hopefully be a little less stressful than this last week. I hope to run more and lift weights. I know I will see some improvement in my acne this week if I can work out on a regular basis. I’m keeping the same regimen this week. I didn’t do a bentonite clay mask this last week, but they just seem like so much effort because I can’t wash them down the drain due to how much clay I use. There will be less sweets consumed this week and cutting down on sugar! It’s also Day 15 of no porn or masturbation for me. These are things that I consider bad for my mental and sexual health. Whether or not abstaining from them helps my acne directly, I cannot say, but I CAN say that I feel more confident when I abstain from them. Confidence is what I need right now amidst the potentially embarrassing acne. The acceptance that this is not going to happen quickly is still hard for me to accept and there’s been times already this past week when my brain told me to just give up and give in.     Hi there anybody who's following! [No one xD] I'm here at the end of Day Five and I honestly think this day was great. Started off chugging water. Doing some leg stretches. Breakfast was 2 eggs and a quinoa burger. 5,000iu Vitamin D3, 30mg Zinc, 400mg magnesium, 4 desiccated liver tabs, a mug of chamomile and I was on my way. The white head on my lip already dried out overnight - I put tea tree on it a couple times. Sometimes this helps, others it doesn't. I'm really glad this one drained so quick because I have a date tomorrow and I need my lips lookin' good. As far as the rest of my skin - my neck is still getting new cysts as well as my back and shoulders. I notice I’m more energized and confident though and they aren’t draining my confidence as much. I have a good amount of hope that this is early in the journey and things will start to look up sooner rather than later. Right when I got to work I saw a bag of cookies at my work bench. My co-worker is a saint and saved me some of her gluten and dairy free pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. I had one of those right away with my tea and it put me in the perfect mood. Maybe there was a bit more sugar in it than I needed, but I don’t give a care. I took three more liver tabs. My energy was crazy good today. Had a mint chocolate RX bar and took another three liver tabs around 11:00am. There was a pizza lunch provided today and I have to say that it smelled amazing, but I was glad to do my own thing. I also took comfort that there is dairy free/gluten free pizza options out there for when I want to go crazy. Lunch for me was a tuna salad, carrots, liver tabs, and unsweetened chocolate (nasty). I don’t know what possessed me to think this chocolate bar would taste good. It’s for baking, but I wanted to try it as an aphrodisiac haha. I am still looking for a sex drive that doesn’t exist right now. Through NoFap, I know it’s possible to get my drive back, it just takes time to reset. Look at the subreddit if you’ve got any questions about that. I worked out after work (5x5 StrongLifts app), ran a mile, and then ate another cookie and a beef jerky bar. After this I went home and had a green smoothie but no other food because I wasn’t hungry. I’m hungry now at 10pm, but I’ll go to bed hungry. I went to the library to check out a book called “The Final Empire” by Brandon Sanderson - recommended by the guy I had a date with last week. After I got groceries for the weekend, walked my pupper for 20 minutes, and now I’m here sippin’ tea! I’m gonna do an Epsom salt foot soak for extra Magnesium and start this book. It’s been a mega productive day. I probably won’t have time to log anything tomorrow, but I’ll try to write something on my lunch break. My acne shows no major signs of improvement.   12. Hey, I am a seventeen year old boy, I have acne, but have that kinda under control, but have such oily skin. Now I have several optitions to reduce my sebum, I list them below: - Pantothenic acid, B5 / oxidises the sebum in the skin - Vitamin D(3) / I really dont know how this reduces sebum - Vitamin A / I also don't know exactly how this can reduce sebum - Accutane / shrinks the oil glands permanently - Saw palmetto, green tea extract (oral) / Lowering androgen levels - Green tea extract (topical) / Lowering androgen levels Now I am a bit confused, because I dont know wich ones I should chose, and maybe more than one at the same time? well, every type of supplement has his own things, B5, D3, and A works in the whole body, but doesn't affect the dead skin cells and bacteria, the things that lowers the androgens does those three things, they let your skin produce less sebum, horny layer is less and less bacteria, but if I take that internally, then I will not grow very well because I am still in puberty, that's why I thought about topical green tea, but than I don't affect my scalp, back and chest, sooo, please help!! ow, and also the vitamins help always reduce sebum, regardless what causes it, but androgen blockers only reduces it when it's caused by hormones, for example, maybe my overproduction of sebum is for 70% because to many androgens, and for 30% because food allergies. I have tried pantothenic acid tho, a few months, every day I would say 1500mg, but it didn't work very well, actually i dont saw any improvement, maybe this time I will see differences, I honestly can't believe that that pantothenic acid did'nt anything! help, please! BTW, I don't want accutane! for several reasons! I don't have that severe acne for accutane and it's just the sebum, and I don't want to fall even deeper in depression

I have something that i judge similar to acne, but it's not acne... it's called fordyce spots... i think most people here don't know what it is, it's tiny white bumps that can appear on your penis, inside your mouth (in the cheeks) or on the lips... those bumps are supposed to be sebaceous gland , and most people say that roaccutane seems to make them disappear but they immediatly come back once the medecine is stopped. First i want to know if some of you have them, it can be on the lips or on the penis, and if you changed something in your life that reduced them, i'm asking you because they seem similar to acne, if roaccutane works for acne and my condition it means there is a way to get rid of them or at least reducing them... even if most people say that once they are here they will never be gone, i want to try something. Laser doesn't work too, they come back everytime... what make those bumps horrific is that lots of people don't know what it is, especially on the lips it looks scary, i have this on my lips since 25 years old and i'm 30 now, they came after i took antidepressant pills, this made my lips so dry so i used a lip balm and they showed up, i don't know if it's from the antidepressant or the lip balm but they slowly spread... at the moment i feel lucky because there are lots of bad pictures on google and mine are not as visible... i don't want it to get worse so i'm looking for a solution. I have seen a big topic about vitamine D here, for some people it helped them a lot... and for some it didn't do anything... 2 years ago i got a blood test and it showed that i didn't have enough of vitamin D so i started to take but i didn't see anything better... i'm still taking it by the way and i got blood tested again, i have now enough of vitamin D but it could be higher than this before it get dangerous, so i think i'm gonna try to take higher dose and get another blood test in a few months, i want to know if someone here tried something like that, and for those that vitamin D didn't work, did you get a blood test to know what was your vitamin D level ? maybe some people need more of this vitamin to see results, i suggest you to type "high dose vitamin D " on google, some people have amazing result with extremily high dose of vitamin D (i'm not talking only about acne but health stuffs in general which includ different skin conditions, psiorasis seem to be go away too) but i don't have the balls to try really high dose because it can be dangerous, so my purpose is to go at the limit before it's supposed to be too much. i have seen that vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) could work for acne, have you tried it ?? To end my topic i want to say that i have a DNA disease that make my cholesterol very very low, so i can have problem to absorb fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, K) On my recent blood test my doctor saw that i need vitamin E, but i have enough of A, D (because i take already for 2 years) and K is fine too. So if one of you got those fordyce spots and reduced them while trying to get rid of acne, please tell me how ! And if you have any advice even if you don't have fordyce spots, tell me too !     Hey guys, I've been on this site for a while now and am finally deciding to share my journey in hopes of getting 100% clear. Quick background, I'm a 24 year old female who has suffered from acne since puberty. It started as whiteheads and progressed to cystic acne as I became older. I used to have it all over my face, chest, and upper back but after getting on birth control at 17 I've had soft clear skin on my chest and back. Currently, I have a lot of hyperpigmentation and acne on my cheeks and chin; my forehead has never really been a problem unless I eat poorly (more on that later). I'll update every wednesday with pics! Oily skin: I used to be an OIL SLICK. I mean, I could wash my face with Dawn dish detergent and 10 minutes later see little oil spots flickering from my pores. If I wore makeup it would melt off after 4 hours. What cured this for me was Vitamin D3. You have to take Vitamin D3 in order to reap the benefits as the way it is processed in your body is different than if you just took a Vitamin D supplement. This single-handedly helped my skin so much, and I truly believe that an acne problem is a gut problem. VItamin D does deplete your magnesium levels, so I spray magnesium oil onto my skin (arms/legs/stomach NOT face), to keep that in check. I also am a lot less anxious now after beginning the magnesium. I believe where acne comes from has a lot less to do with what you're putting on your face, although you can clear your face with topicals. I've cut out dairy from my diet 90% of the time (pizza is usually that 10% exception), after reading that dairy is strongly linked to acne. All of my opinions in these posts are evidence-based by the way. I'm also currently going gluten free for 30 days to see how my skin reacts. I notice that the only time my forehead breaks out is when I eat a lot of wheat, so I'm hoping that completely eliminating it from my diet will produce bigger changes. Just because you don't have Celiac disease doesn't mean you can be intolerant to gluten or other foods. In fact, most allergies have to do with the way we process our foods, not the actual food in its whole form. Sorry for rambling! Moving on.. Moisturizers: WHY is it so hard to find a decent moisturizer! I've literally tried probably a hundred moisturizers; what has worked for me without adverse reactions is Pond's(but it's thick so I only use it at night), Cerave (without SPF), and Hemp Seed Oil. Olay, Neutrogena, African black soap's moisturizer, Cetaphil (shockingly!) Jojoba oil, Acne.Org moisturizer, Dermasil, Clinique dramatically different moisturizer, Olive oil, Bio oil, Coconut oil, garnier oil-free gel moisturizer, Aveeno clear, Clean and Clear w/ salicylic acid, Burt's Bees, and I'm sure others have all resulted in breakouts in one form or another. I do believe a moisturizer is crucial, but finding one that works for you takes a lot of time and way too much money. Makeup: Tried and true makeup for me has been MakeUp Forever HD foundation (but it is SO expensive!), Revlon colorstay whipped, Maybelline FIT Me, and ironically NYC's pressed powders. (LOVE it when cheap makeup is great!) I use Revlon age defying concealer and Neutrogena healthy skin blush. I've tried so many foundations and blushes, and these are my go-tos. Face wash: I use Purity by Philosophy and it is truly worth the money to me. I also make sure to take off all of my makeup with neutrogena makeup wipes and this has helped keep my skin clear immensely also. If I want a deep clean, I'll use Pond's Cold Cream cleanser like twice a month, it's just a pain because you use a wash cloth every time. I've also tried a ton of facewashes, if I need to use one in a pinch I'll use Dove soap and it does the job without ruining my skin. Topicals: I've tried so many topicals. Retin-A (peeled and didn't clear), Benzaclin (my skin became used to it but it was great), Dan's BP (good stuff), grisi sulfur soap (good stuff also for mild acne), African Black soap (ehh), salicylic acid in the wipes, toners, and gel/creams. Oral supplements: Spiro (became hypotensive), Saw Palmetto (literally made me crazy! but I did go up a cup size haha!) milk thistle and burdock root (I saw no change in my skin after completing the whole bottle), and I'm currently on Day 5 of minocycline. I don't want to go on Accutane for the long-term risks that it poses (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), so for now I haven't tried that. Okay! I think that about covers it. Currently: AM: Cleanse with purity, apply Cerave moisturizer and later on makeup if I'm leaving the house. 50 mg of Mino twice a day. PM: Remove makeup w/ neutrogena makeup wipes, cleanse with purity and apply pea-sized Epiduo Forte followed by Cerave moisturizer. Supplements: 1 TSP of Carlson's Cod Liver Oil (many benfits to this just overall) + Birth control Tri-Estyrella (generic ortho tric-cylcen) Thanks for Reading! XO

    Hello all, I was on Accutane from 2013 to 2014 and it got me mega-clear... for a couple of months. After that, I started getting the occasional pimple - but nothing to worry about. Then, I started getting more and more, and started incorporating a little bit of Dan's Regimen back into my routine (I'd used the Regimen from around 2009 to 2013 with varying degrees of success). Then, in the winter of 2014, I broke out HARD - just like the pre-Accutane days. The breakout consisted of a bunch of deep, painful cysts around my mouth region. I began using the Regimen daily (only at night, since I can't apply it during the day). I've been on it for over a year now, and while it definitely helps to a certain extent, I keep getting pustules on a regular basis. Some of them are pretty minor, while others form deep, inflamed clusters that eventually burst and leave a bloody scab. The deep ones mostly happen around my mouth region. I think the regimen I use now - BP coupled with a gentle antibacterial bar - keeps the pustules away somewhat, but not entirely. I also break out a little on my chest, where the BP can't reach. I am going to give the Vitamin D thing a shot. It's cleared some people, and hasn't worked at all for others. Seems like it depends on whether a Vitamin D deficiency is the root cause of your acne or not. In my case, there's a chance it might be. I don't get much sunlight at all these days - in the office or at home most of the day, aside from some brief indirect sunlight during lunch hour and commutes. Plus, I've read that in the area in which I live, it's impossible for the skin to absorb enough vitamin D during the fall and winter months anyway. In addition, I've read that being on Accutane can shoot vitamin D levels down significantly, and I was on it for nine entire months... in any case, it's worth a shot. I'll give it a couple of months - if it doesn't work, my next step will probably be an anti-fungal wash. I'm going to take 10,000-12,000 IU a day, since I'd prefer quicker results. I've also been supplementing with Fish Oil for a while now (not for acne, mainly for concentration), and I gave antibacterial supplements a shot (garlic and turmeric). These didn't do much for my skin condition, so I ditched everything but Fish Oil. I've also started a multivitamin + mineral supplement. I'm interested to see where this goes!
  18. Hello everyone, I would like to share the results I have experienced by following this diet, specifically to cure my acne issues. I had mild/moderate acne since I was about 18... I'm 20 now and in college. In college, it became worse..probably considered moderate. At the end of my freshman year I was talking to my father about how fed up I was with these pimples on my face and how it destroyed my confidence. He is a firm believer that our skin is a visual representation of our internal health. SO he suggested I read the primal blueprint and download the dietary cure for acne by Loren Cordain. So I did, and decided it couldn't hurt to try it for a month. A bit more background, I was eating like an average college kid. processed foods, soda, coffee, and the occasional fast food. It was not at all healthy/ balanced. Plus, I wasn't exercising... during the Summer, I began a 1 month paleo experiment. this is a picture of my skin at its very worst... God I hate looking at this. Here's what it was like right before I started the diet This is about 18-20 days into the 30 day diet... and at about day 28-30...I was clear! I admit, I still had blackheads, but I hadn't had a single new zit in weeks. Hopefully this inspires some of you to try the paleo diet. I realize it does not help everybody, but it was just what I needed. I Kept a log of everything I ate for 30 days, so if you guys have any questions, I will try and answer them! I can tell you all now that I followed this program strictly.. with the fish oil, zinc, and vitamin d supplements, and I think that's the reason for my quick success. I only washed my face occasionally with a mild almond/oatmeal natural soap I bought at Winco's. thanks everyone, goodluck!
  19. Hello guys! This is my first post there, but I have been reading this forum for a long time. Recently, I started to have some doubts about my skincare routine and my methods of treating acne, so I'd like to hear your opinion! I will summarize my history with acne: I am 18, male and I've had bad skin for 3-4 years, but in the last year it was just terrible (extremely oily skin, lots of large and inflamed pustules). After some unsuccessful treatments (doxycycline, Acnease supplement, Benzoyl Peroxide and every topical known to man) I was finally put on Accutane. My dermatologist told me that he considers a low-dose treatment to be the most effective (balancing side effects with beneficial effects). I took 20mg per day for ~6 months. Since then, I've been taking 10mg per day (~3 months and a half). I weight ~62-63kg, so to reach the recommended cumulative dose I need 9 more months (10mg per day) which is extremely unpleasant for me. Back, chest and arms acne is completely gone. The following description is about the face. My acne and oiliness have improved a lot in the first 3-4 months of Accutane, but since then I've seen little to no progress. Lowering the dose has certainly not helped. My skin is oily (less than in the beginning, but still annoying). My nose is always full of blackheads, even though I apply nose strips every 2 or 3 days. I get small whiteheads/pimples around and on my nose every day and in some bad days even 2-3 larger pimples across my face. However, the biggest problems are the uncountable red/brown marks and the overall redness that I have on my face. They show no sign of fading after so many months! During these months I've tried some "gentle" topical products to support Accutane, however nothing seems to be very effective. I am currently using La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo, which isn't great but at least doesn't (usually) make my skin oilier or redder. I have also been using Paula's Choice Pore Reducing Toner and 2% BHA Liquid for over 1 month with no results. The weird thing is that in some days, like in a few days a month, my skin is magically bright and clear. It is much less oilier and all the red marks are barely visible, even from up close. Every product that I apply gets absorbed very quickly. It’s still not perfect skin, but it can be considered "normal". For the rest of the time, and by this I mean like 90%, my skin has an ugly red-brown tone, it is oily and I usually have 3-4 pimples of varying size every day. All the red marks are very visible and look like active acne. Any product that I apply on my face makes it sticky and oily and it remains like this for hours. I have observed no correlation between this and diet and/or stress (I am always stressed and my diet is not very healthy but I don’t eat any junk food or anything in excess. I avoid dairy products. Little sugar as well). As of now, I cannot explain the weird fluctuations of my skin, nor can I find an effective way to combat this. I thought of increasing the dose of Accutane, to at least 20mg per day, but my dermatologist is against this. He says that my skin will eventually become normal (completely cured) but I am not seeing any progress at all (for at least 3 months my skin was the same, maybe worse). I am currently trying to improve my skin’s condition with some supplements: - Zinc (~25mg per day) and other minerals - Vitamin D3 (planning to take 2200IU per day) - Vitamin C (not much more than the daily dose) Although I don’t think they will make a big difference. I drink white and green tea every day, although I have tried this in the past and I’ve seen no improvement. I recently read on this forum that some studies say that green tea is actually bad for your hormones. Is this true? I thought that it was universally accepted that green tea lowers testosterone. I also thought of taking some herb supplements which should help (Androgen/DHT blockers) like saw palmetto, pumpkin seeds, etc. since my acne might be hormonal but I see that most of these products are made specifically for prostate health issues. Would it be safe for me to take them? I also heard that Omera-3 might be useful. I italicized the last paragraph as it is one of the most important issues that I want to discuss here. that It may not be much, but these supplements are my last resort. It would be great to hear your experiences and opinions!

So i have started a new regimen which seems to be working in reducing my acne (which is mostly just clogged pores) i am not going to tell you what i am using (and taking) until i am sure that it is actually these things for sure that are helping. My original post mentioned that i was trialing Vitamin D however that really wasn't working out so i stopped taking it. If my current regimen keeps working i will post back within a few days so stay tuned. I have taken before and after pics of my new regimen.. i have posted it as a comment so scroll down this page and it should be there.. My original post: I was a acne.org user a few years ago with the same problem i am posting today. However in 2014 i somehow cured myself and i honestly do not know how! I remember i cured myself so good that no matter what i put on my skin i never got a single pimple or clogged pore or anything. I wasn't even using any fancy products. Well i dont know why and i dont know how but for the past 2 months the same skin issues started again. I didn't change anything with my products either. The only thing i remember was that i took a monthly Vitamin D regularly and also probiotics. I stopped both those medications because i literally got lazy and forgot to take them plus i was broke lol! my skincare routine usually just consisted of washing my face with the Benzac Daily Facial Liquid Cleanser (with a brush). So basically without going into too much detail the reason why i am starting this topic is to trial a Vitamin D3 and see if it makes any difference with my skin. This time though i am not going to buy a monthly Vitamin D3 i am just going to get the over the counter Vitamin D3. I will also start on my probiotics again. I am posting my before photos to this post and then report back possibly after a week with results. so stay tuned
  21. I am a 26 year old 120lb female and I live in Canada. I had cystic acne for 13 years that got worse as I was ovulating every month. It appeared to be hormonal acne. My skin and hair were also exceptionally greasy. When I wore makeup it would slide off after a few hours. My nose would look like someone put butter on it. My pores were large and wide open because of all the grease. I would have 4-5 cysts at a time with a nose full of black and white heads, and little bumps along my temples, cheeks, mouth and jaw line. My acne changed a lot over 13 years (when I was a teen I had a lot on my forehead and mostly clear everywhere else), however what remained the same was that is was always there. I never noticed if it would improve in the summer, but looking back on photos, I did have slightly better skin during sunny months. The main, noticeable effect that Vitamin D3 has on my skin is that it dries it out and reduces the oil on my skin. The first two weeks that I took it, my skin started peeling a lot. I loved it. The peeling made my hyperpigmentation go away faster and if there was a small bump, it would peel right off, rather than growing into a big infected cyst. Within those first two weeks I stopped having new breakouts. After about a month, the peeling slowed down, but my skin stayed clear. I now have clear skin, as long as I keep up my vitamin D intake. My hair is also not uncontrollably greasy anymore. I can wash it every 2 days now, where I used to have to wash it 1-2 times per day and it always looked terribly greasy before washes. I take Vitamin D3 to prevent my skin from getting oily, which prevents me from having acne. I had to play around with the dosage a little bit because if I take too much, my skin gets too dry (especially my eyelids). If I don’t take enough, my skin gets oily and I break out. It’s actually a very fine balance for me. I also have to take into account that my skin is much oilier between the end of my period and the time I ovulate, so during that time, I take more Vitamin D3. I take 7000 IU of Vitamin D3 during my oily time of the month and I take 5000IU- 6000IU during my less greasy time of the month. I tried taking between 8000IU-10 000IU and that made my eye lids so dry they started flaking, no amount of moisturizer or vaseline could fix it. So 7000IU is my personal upper limit. At one point I had a doctor scare me that I was taking too much Vitamin D (doctors have a much lower daily recommendation than the Vitamin D Council) so I bumped my dosage down to 3000IU. After about 3-4 days of this lower amount I got two very large new pimples on my cheek. As you can imagine, I went back up to my old dosage after that. I have since gotten Vitamin D blood tests with my doctor which showed I had normal levels of Vitamin D in my blood. I told my doctor about my discovery and he said "Who knew!?". I guess not many people do know about this, and the information on the internet is very limited so I decided to start a blog about my story with resources to help other people who want to learn more about vitamin D for acne.   22. Linoleic acid is a vital component in normal sebum that does what it is supposed to: Protect the skin. Skin/sebum in people (and other mammals) prone to acne and other skin problems have been found to be deficient in linoleic Acid. Sebum deficient in linoleic acid is hard and sticky and clogs pores. It looks greasy and has fewer protective and anti-inflammatory properties. Key points: Acne and other problem prone skin (in people and animals) are lacking in linoleic acid. Linoleic acid is a component in the ceramides that make skin strong and impermeable and thus less easily ruptured and less sensitive to irritations. This can be changed with topical application. Grape seed and Safflower oil are over 70% linoleic acid. Linoleic Acid inhibits the enzymes that convert Testosterone to DHT. Both types. So it can help with hirsutism, hairloss and acne. Linoleic Acid is anti-inflammatory and protects the skin from UV damage. Linoleic Acid inhibits melatonin and thus fades hyperpigmentation. Linoleic acid is anti-microbial as the P. Acnes blamed for acne. Linoleic acid deficiency causes an increase in interluekin -1a which is a factor inflammatory response. Tretinoin (Retin A & the like) alters the lipid profile improving the linoleic acid composition. Linoleic Acid improves the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) and retinoid X receptor (RXR) situation that regulates sebum production and hyperkeritinization/differenciation (and is what accutane affects) Linoleic acid is involved in the formation of Lamellar granules that produce the enzymes involved in normal exfoliation. They also form the armor that makes your skin strong. Acne prone skin has been found to contain fewer lamellar granules. Ceramide in a deficient skin barrier is lacking a protein called sphingosine. In winter our skin produces less sphingosine which is one reason acne often worsens in winter. Topical application of live cultured yogurt can boost production. Thyroid hormone affects lipid profile. One way that perhaps both hypo and hyperthyroid conditions affect acne. We don't necessarily have a dietary or systemic deficiency in linoleic acid. Just in the sebum and thus a topical application is the best course of action. This tendency is genetic. Examples of skin problems affected by a deficiency in linoleic acid include acne, eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilares, hypersensitivity to allergens, and dry itchy sensitive skin of all types--aka dermatitis. Get a small, preferably dark colored bottle to keep a small amount at a time in your medicine cabinet. ------------------------ So, my dog is prone to itchy skin and is extremely sensitive to flea bites. Which attracts more fleas. They like dry, irritated, easily permeated skin. Most healthy animals aren't that bothered by fleas and some don't get fleas. My brother had an indoor/outdoor cat that didn't. And I have a friend with a dog and cat that don't get fleas which is amazing in this climate. So, there's probably something different about these animals. Just like there's something different about we acne prone people that makes the SAD diet leads to acne in us, but not everyone else. I've been looking in to what I could do to improve his skin and have found information on some dogs having a deficient skin barrier because their skin is lacking a ceramide. That lead to me finding info on them lacking linoleic acid, just like acne prone skin. And I discovered there is a topical 'spot on' treatment called Allerderm Spot on Lipid Complex For damaged epidermal barriers that involves putting a blend of lipids in a spot on the dog, usually the neck, where he won't lick it off just like with the spot on flea treatments. That means you must be able to change your lipid profile with topically applied lipids!!!! And you might not necessarily need to apply it directly to your acne prone skin if you don't want to. The way allerderm is not applied to the itchy skin but to some spot where the dog won't lick it off. Since dogs can't have grapes, I'm trying safflower oil instead of my preferred grapeseed for now. Backstory: So I primarily have clogged pore with the occasional hormonal inflamed zit on my chin (especially when I'm in contact with tons of xenoestrogens like unfermented soy or it's that lovely time of the month). About half a year ago, I started breaking out on ONLY my right cheek in these red pimples. And I kind of ignored it until I finally just, because of anxiety and my skin, gave up and revamped my diet. I went vegan and FINALLY started taking my vitamin d supplements (2000 iu a day) since I was diagnosed with a severe deficiency (my level was 9 lol) like two years ago. It's weird because I'd never felt any pathological effects (and I'm an intensive/competitive dancer) in my years of deficiency. Anyways, in a week, the zits stopped happening, and if I ever missed a day or few, about a week after that, it would come back. I knew it was the d. I've tested this several times, and while it's no scientific method, I'm relatively sure my d deficiency was the reason I was breaking out as taking the supplements with a meal during the day would get rid of it within a week. I also went back on my normal, vegetarian diet after 5 weeks, and it had no impact. Anyways, a few weeks ago (so, after about 5 months, I think?) it started coming back, so I amped up the d to about 4000-5000 iu a day, thinking maybe I got more sensitive to it. That didn't do much. Some days were better than others, though. I saw some reviews on vit d where people started breaking out again, and one of the suggestions was that you need to take vit a along with d. So I started that, but I started breaking out even more (not going to say it was the a, but I keep reading conflicting evidence about how a interacts with d so I'm not sure if it prevents absorption or aids in it....). So I stopped that after a week. Granted, a just might take more time to work than d, so perhaps I should continue? I started taking a bit of zinc every day, but I just wanted to know if people started breaking out again after a few months on d. It's weird for me because it was connected with this very strange, very area-specific and type-specific kind of acne I had only recently started getting (I'm 19), and it certainly didn't do anything for my other kinds of acne that I've had since puberty (thanks genetics). And I'm most concerned with this chronic inflammatory acne, because it's definitely something internal if it was so strongly impacted by the d before. Anyone know why this might be happening? I read some places that magnesium is also important to restore when heavy dosing d, but once again, unclear as to why it's this d-specific region of my face that's been breaking out. I'm thinking of upping the dosage a little more, but I just wanted to know if anyone else experienced this, and if they figured out what's wrong. TL;DR: Basically, a few months ago, I found out vit d helped with a certain kind of acne for me. I've been taking it religiously, but now it's stopped working. Even upping the dosage to 5000 iu isn't helping. Anyone else experience this, and if you did, figure a solution? (Like vit a, magnesium, vit k, etc?) Any 2 cents is much appreciated!

    Hey everyone! I have oily skin, and it's gotten progressively worse. I believe it's a great contributor to the acne on my face, and I recently started seeing a derma for my acne. I'm wondering if vitamin D would help me with my oiliness? I've been looking around the forums seeing people taking vitamin D really helped. On my recent blood works, I had a deficiency in Vitamin D (which is weird because I live in Florida and I went to the because for a whole week straight before the blood work was done). So, I was wondering if that's why I'm oily or if all this talk about vitamin D and oily skin is just a myth? Any suggestions? A bit of background: On and off struggle with acne (currently struggling) Extremely oily skin now (makeup never lasts because of oiliness) Recent blood work said I had a vitamin d deficiency
  25. I have been suffering from moderate acne for 6 years now (from 16 to 22 years) and i've finally found out what was wrong! I'm clear like never before and I want to share it with you, and the best part? I don't use any expensive products! So a little background, I've tried almost everything you can think of: different cleansers, moisturisers, harsh chemicals/drugs, cutting out diary, multivitamins, drinking more water, trying different shampoos, topical tea tree oil, internally apple cider vinegar, garlic, aloe vera, omega-3, fish oil, washing my face religiously, not washing my face,. the list can go on I think i've made my point. The problem? Vitamin deficiency! I was searching online and stumbled upon this vitamin stack that could help people with acne if they had deficiencies. I don't see sun often where I live, so it made sense to me to try it. This is the stack with the dosages I use (it cost me around 50euros/55dollars for 3 months worth): Vitamin A: 10,000 IU/day Vitamin D3: 10,000 IU/day Vitamin E: 400 IU/day Zinc Glycinate: 30mg/day Milk Thistle: 500mg/day Vitamin B3/Niacin: 500mg eo3d (You need the niacin that causes the flush) I've been using these for a month now, and my skin feels so clear and smooth, running my hand through my face when washing it with water feels so different now, it feels healthy, vibrant, smooth like a baby's ass. Also I have a little pre-sleep routine that I religiously follow, because it makes my skin feel really fresh and the opposite of inflammated (unflammated? heh) 1: I wash my hands with any soap first, to get off all the grease and oil 2: Use lukewarm water to clean my face 3: Apply 3-5 drops of pure argan oil on my hands and apply it on my face (I used to do this gently because my face was inflammated but thesedays it doesnt matter how rough/fast I move with my fingers, because my skin feels thicker and healthier it can take any pounding) 4: sleep My first post here so if you have any questions or if I forgot anything let me know!
