I Really Need to Remember to be Gentle
I had a couple of annoying small clogged pores that I messed with and my face is healing from them. There's two small pink marks on my skin. I have one more small pore on my left cheek that I tried to clear up, and probably should have just let it purge on its own.

I'm trying to remember to be gentle with my skin. I'm not going to use Atralin tonight on the spots that are sensitive. Things are getting clearer each week, but my patience is definitely being tested.

Say a prayer if you could, that I can stay patient and be kind to my skin!

Tomorrow = 7 Months on Topical Retinoid & Spironolactone
Tomorrow marks 7 months of this regimen: Topical retinoid- Atralin brand (0.05%) a pea-size amount, applied once per night, 30 mins after applying moisturizer and letting it sink in to my skin. Also, I've been taking 75 mg of Spironolactone each morning, and one pill of Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

My skin has been a rollercoaster of purging, healing, and then being clear. But I have to say that my face continues to improve, week by week.

Some weeks are better than others, though. I've had my period more frequently than I should have because I missed my birth control, so my face broke out a bit the past few days. Right now, there's a few pink marks that are healing, and I had one annoying pore purge on my left lower cheek/chin area.

I'm glad to see that the Atralin has purged almost all of the clogged pores under my skin, and that very few remain (I hope!). It's hard to tell when I'll feel like my face has fully purged all of the clogged pores and is on its way towards consistent clarity. I really, really hope this month is a turning point and that things are much easier from here on out.

If anyone else has been on a topical retinoid for 6+ months, I'd love to know how the following months were for you and your skin!

Middle Of Month 6 On Topical Retinoid
This week has been pretty good so far! I've had a few small pores purge--there's honestly not many left on my entire face that are clogged, which is amazing!

I have one clogged pore on my right cheek that I'm hoping will purge and go away/ heal by tomorrow. Overall, I have a couple of small pink and red healing marks. My chin, cheeks, and face overall is SO much more clear than it ever has been.

Praying that I can stay patient with this regimen and resist touching/ messing with my face! I'm only a couple of weeks away from the 7 months completed mark.

This has been such a long journey, but it is finally starting to pay off

this happened to me a LOT while using a topical retinoid. My skin had waves of getting very clear, and then breaking out (either near my period, or during other weeks). This is common when using a topical retinoid. Differin works with your skin as it goes through its monthly cycle of shedding skin cells and creating new ones. I'm at 6 months, and just the past few weeks, my skin has become more consistently clear every week, and not had the cycles.

    Improving With Time
The right-side of my face is clear, but the left side of my face is still healing in a couple of places.

There's one annoying spot on my left temple that won't seem to go away. Also, there's a red mark on my left cheek and one small on my chin. There's a small red mark on my forehead from what I think/ thought was a clogged pore. I can't really tell. All in all, this isn't too bad, especially since I currently have my period, and my skin usually goes nuts during it.

I've been applying moisturizer and my usual skincare routine. I'm hoping these marks heal up today and tonight! Fingers crossed!!!

Overall, my skin has purged a number of small pores the past week and has gotten a lot more clear overall. Slowly, but surely the RetinA is clearing up my skin.

7 Days Until 6 Months On A Topical Retinoid
I've finished 23 full weeks on a topical retinoid, and I have just 7 days until I can say that I've been on this regimen for a full 6 months.

I've been keeping up with my birth control (Ortho Tri-Cyclen), Topical Retinoid at night (Atralin 0.05%), and Spironolactone (75 mg in the AM).

RIght now, I have a couple of small red marks on my right cheek/ jaw from pores purging, and one pore that purge on my right cheek bone today. I have one red mark on my chin from a pore that purged, but also sensitive skin that reacted badly to the Atralin.

I'm focusing on letting my skin heal and being gentle with it. I'm finally feeling like most of the pores on my face have purged and that my face is very clear!

Here's to being gentle with my skin and things continuing to improve! Keep me in your thoughts and prayers, please!

Started Week 23 On A Topical Retinoid-- Only 2 Weeks From 6 Months!
If you read my last blog post, the past week has been a ROUGH one.

Seriously-- I was incredibly down about my skin and for a few days, I didn't even leave my apartment. Trust me when I say that it was THAT bad.

I had messed with and pushed/ picked at my skin while using a topical retinoid and literally layers of my skin on my right cheek peeled off. Disgusting--and so bad for my skin. After days of treating my skin more gently, eating healthy, and moisturizing like crazy, my skin is nearly mended. I only have one tiny red mark on my chin and one small pink one that's easily covered with a dot of concealer on my right cheek. I have one clogged pore on my chin, but when I use the topical retinoid tonight, I think it will purge naturally tomorrow or Sunday.

On Wednesday of this week I began Week 23. That means that as of next Wednesday I will be just 1 week away from the 6 month mark. WOW.

This regimen has been great at getting years-worth of clogged pores purged from my skin, but I honestly have to say that it's been one of the hardest things I've ever done.

This weekend and week my goal is to keep eating healthy, work out more, treat my skin VERY gently, and be patient. I'm praying that I can remember that this regimen takes time and that often, I'm the one making my skin look red/ irritated when I mess with it. I'm going to tell myself out loud "hands off" when I catch myself wanting to push pores out/pick at my skin. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers this week

If anyone else is on a topical retinoid, I'd love to hear how you're doing or how it worked for you!

I agree with the above. I use CeraVe cleanser and moisturizer. When I need a bunch of moisture without clogging pores, I use CeraVe in the tub.

Also-- this regimen seriously takes so much time and forces out the gunk from your pores--on its own time. I realized that every time I had marks/ my skin looked bad, it's because I messed with it. And there have been SO many times while using a topical retinoid that I wish I had just not picked/touched it/ tried to force the clogged pore out.

I'm in week 23, and all I can say is that I'm still getting rid of some small clogged pores, but that my skin really doesn't have any left. It truly does take about 6 months to see the full effects

    Hiding And Slowly Healing
So I royally messed up my face the other day. I messed with 2 clogged pores on the right side of my face and made what wouldn't have been a bit deal at all, a total mess.

My skin got irritated and then ripped and peeled. UGH. It was terrible.

Slowly, my skin on my right cheek is healing, and I also have a red mark on my left cheek from a clogged pore there. My skin is really, really sensitive still, which I forgot.

I'm applying moisturizer like crazy, but for the past 2 nights I have NOT applied RetinA. I want my skin to heal almost entirely before I add that back into my regimen.

I need to go to the grocery store tomorrow, but I'm dreading putting on a ton of concealer just to feel okay going out in public
I really, really, really hate this.

Once my skin heals and is normal-looking, I'm NOT going to squeeze/press/pick at it.

I Seriously Messed My Face Up.
I need to learn my lesson and

1- stop pressing/ picking at zits, esp while using Retin A
2- not over-apply Retin A to my skin

I have a HUGE dark red mark/ spot of peeling skin on my right cheek, smack dab in the middle and a red mark on my lower right cheek/jaw

I've drank a ton of water, taken two multi-vitamins, drank green tea, applied a green tea bag to the red mark area, and then applied CeraVe moisturizer and Neosporin to the red mark.

Please pray that it heals tonight and tomorrow :/ I don't want to have a weekend where I'm hiding my face again. I was doing so well and my face was getting really clear

    Day 156- Dang It.
I messed with a clogged pore on my face and applied Retin A to the area, which made my skin red and sensitive.
I'm hoping that by icing it, and applying a lot of moisturizer and CeraVe cream, my skin will be able to repair itself and look normal by tomorrow!

Day 145 On Retina, Bp Wash, & Spironolactone - Things Continue To Improve
It's Day 145 and the past couple of weeks have been pretty good.

Last week I had my time of the month (a bit early--again), and I had a couple of annoying spots--one in particular on my left temple by my hair, but it went away within a couple of days. Of course, I did make it worse by squeezing/ messing with it.

My skin is still pretty sensitive/fragile in places, especially after I wash it. I'm trying to be more gentle and not mess with clogged pores, but it really is easier said than done.

Right now I have one small pore that is healing/ going to purge in the next day or so. Also, I have a couple of small pink marks on my right lower cheek from a pore that purged this weekend. All in all, things continue to improve and it feels like my skin has gotten rid of almost all of the deep clogged pores.

This has been a long and very hard journey, but I am so glad that I've stuck through it--through the very, very worst. And now, things are looking up. I'm very thankful for that. I'm hoping from here on out it's just little ones that go away easily/ on their own.

Pray that I can be patient and gentle with myself as things continue. Wednesday marks 21 weeks done on this regimen-- that's 5 months and 1 week in total. I'll be very excited to see how my face is in 3 more weeks and 3 days at the 6 months completed mark

I think you should decide on a new course of action and really stick to it. Changing things really often is just as bad as not doing anything, sometimes worse. Good luck and I hope your derm has some good advice!

Day 129 And Things Are Healing
It's Day 129 (still in the middle of week 19).

Things are finally starting to heal. THANK GOODNESS. Seriously. After like 7 days of absolutely terrible skin, it's so, so nice to just be covering up some red marks and be able to go out in public and feel somewhat decent.

I still have 1 small red mark on my left cheek that's healing (from a deep clogged pore that purged there), 1 small one on my left jawline, 2 on my right jawline, and 1 small one on my chin.

I'm still taking my meds as I should, drinking a ton of water, eating healthy food, taking a multi-vitamin, and hoping that things continue to improve. I am in the midst of my cycle, and I need to find out before my next one how to deal with the hormones and acne.

I am taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen regularly, but I'm still getting my period a week early every time--around 3 weeks instead of 4 :/
I really want to just take 2 packs and go 2 months without a period, but my body never lets me do that.

Here's hoping that things continue to heal and improve, and that I can feel happy and confident at work this week and next weekend!

Thank you if you said a quick prayer for me--it really means a lot!

    Praying My Skin Heals Tonight
I'm in Chicago this weekend to visit my Dad, and I really want to be the real me--the one who loves to be social and be out and about. It's very hard to be that person with a lot of active acne/ acne marks.

But, for my dad, I'm going to try my very best. I am hoping that with drinking more water tonight, taking my multi-vitamin, and eating some more veggies, I can give my skin what it needs to heal a lot overnight.

Right now I have 1 red mark (from a deeper pore that purged on my left cheek), and a couple of pink marks on my left jawline, and a couple of pink marks on my right jawline, and one on my chin.

Please, please say a small prayer for me that my skin heals up and that this regimen continues to clear it. I have struggled with this for so long, and such a long list of other more major medical problems for the past 15 years, and I really just want to feel confident and beautiful at 23-years-old.
