  1. I was taking ibuprofen tablets as well for about a week and it seemed to help but I realise that's not a long term fix. The ibuprofen gel a few times a day did seem to calm the cyst down a little, but not remarkably.
  2. I know full well that I shouldn't, but I've let acne completely take over and limit my life since I was 13 years old. I miss out on so much that I want to do because of my skin. Often I can't even make myself leave the house and I'm very socially isolated and depressed and can't help but think of all the things I would do if I had beautiful normal clear skin like everyone around me seems to have. So what would you do if one day you woke up with perfect clear skin and never got acne again? I'll start with my top things: Go out without makeup on! Go swimming in the sea and at local pools Walk around outside in the rain with no umbrella to feel the rain on my face Go on holidays Leave the house early and get back late Spend entire days at the stables Stay over at friends' houses Go backpacking Go camping Do more sport Go to every social event I'm invited to Eat chocolate and pizza and cheese
  3. Trying to sort my hormones out the natural way....

Thank you so much for your comment! I'm breaking out at the moment and kind of despairing so this gives me a little ray of hope. I'm now on 640mg of Saw Palmetto a day and 300mg of Stinging Nettle Root and I'm about to try upping the nettle to 600mg as well. I've heard of pygeum but not tried it. How much of that did you take? I really hope my skin starts responding to this soon as I'm getting so so depressed. Starting to wish I'd never come off birth control because my hair is falling out too, as if the skin wasn't bad enough on its own.
  4. FINALLY Found a natural cure for my hormonal acne

Ah ok, I'm taking quite a bit less than you. Took 320mg for the first week, then upped to 640mg in the second week and still on that in the third week. Maybe I need to increase again, although I've added stinging nettle which is supposed to do a similar thing as well. Thanks, glad you've seen improvements
  5. FINALLY Found a natural cure for my hormonal acne

Awesome. I'm experimenting with saw palmetto at the moment too. Can I ask what dose you're taking and how long you reckon it took before you stopped breaking out?
  6. Still getting cysts pop up despite my new regime which is ridiculously depressing and making me really struggle. Managed to find some topical ibuprofen gel (I had been taking oral ibuprofen to reduce inflammation but obviously that's not a long-term solution). Anybody tried this and did it help? I'm trying just dabbing a small blob on my two current cysts to see if it will reduce them.
  7. Can saw palmetto cause hair loss?!

Hi, thanks for your reply. I've decided after doing some research and trying stopping the saw palmetto that it's coming off the pill that has caused my hair loss. It didn't really start happening until I'd been off it for 3 months but it's been going really strong for 3 weeks now. Desperately hoping it will stop soon. I've been using a caffeine shampoo for thinning hair which it seems to quite like but hasn't stopped it falling out like I'd hoped. How has your experience with saw palmetto been from a skin perspective? Has it improved things for you and how long did it take if it did?
  8. So.... Here I am again! Had a nice couple of years off this site because my birth control Dianette kept me pretty much clear. But having been on it 3 years and being worried about the health risks, I made the decision to come off it about 3 months ago. Since then, all hell has broken loose on my skin! I have cysts on my forehead and along my jawline and even my hair has started falling out.... Part of my just wants to screw the risk of the pill and go back on it, but part of me sees that if this is what happens when I come off it (especially the hair shedding) then it's clearly been messing with my body big time. So, having been investigating hormones and reading Green Gables's fabulous long post on the topic, I have decided to try the natural route. I figure that my skin responded really well to the anti androgen cyproterone acetate in my pill, so maybe if I can simulate that effect naturally then my skin will respond well to that too. With that in mind, I started taking Saw Palmetto 160mg capsules morning and night 4 days ago. I've also ordered Stinging Nettle Root extract and intend to add that to my regimen when it arrives in the post. Meanwhile I will be keeping up my topical use of Epiduo and Zineryt as these have always served me well and I see no reason to stop them given the lack of side effects or health concerns. Day 5 I think I've already seen some tentative progress with the Saw Palmetto (although the timing might just be coincidence of course). I haven't (yet) had any new cysts form since taking this supplement. I have however continued to break out with smaller spots. My hair is still falling out in abundance but I don't think it's quite as bad as it was a week ago. So I am cautiously hopeful but don't want to count my chickens too soon....
  9. Disappearing Hormone Post?

Thank you, it is working for me now when I click on the link or when I search for it in the forum.
  10. Disappearing Hormone Post?

Thank you Control Panel, that totally worked!
  11. Prozac & Testosterone

I'm not sure how or why, but I know Sertraline/Zoloft (another SSRI) seriously contributed to a horrific cystic acne breakout for me a few years ago, so I can quite believe that Fluoxetine/Prozac might do the same. I don't understand why and I don't think the doctors do either because they said they'd never seen it before, but my skin improved loads when I switched to Venlafaxine/Effexor (an SNRI) so in the end they agreed that it had to be the Sertraline.
  12. Disappearing Hormone Post?

Sorry to be a pain, but could someone who can access the post maybe copy and paste it to me here or in a message just as a short term solution? Would really like to read it to see what supplements are suggested for hormonal acne since I'm breaking out horribly after having to come off the pill. Thanks!
  13. Cleared my skin with saw palmetto and stinging nettle

As an addition, I just found this research on stinging nettle in women with high androgen levels which is an interesting read: Najafipour, et al.pdf
  14. Cleared my skin with saw palmetto and stinging nettle

Hey, thanks for the detailed reply! I tried logging out and back in again and it didn't work for me but I posted about it in the feedback section and the mods are onto it now. Thanks for copying the list over for me though, that's really helpful. That's what I found when googling it.... lots and lots on saw palmetto but nothing much on any of the others and nobody else saying they'd used a combination of different ones. Sorry to hear the herbs aren't keeping you clear anymore, that's a little discouraging. What birth control have you gone on? Dianette was really good for me but I came off it because the blood clot risk scared me. But if I can't clear up these cysts with herbs then going back on it is looking like my only option, it's the only thing that's ever cleared me up in 11 long years. Will certainly keep you updated, I think it is helping so far but not as much as I'd like but I've only been on it 3 days so far too early to judge yet.
  15. Disappearing Hormone Post?

Thank you! The same thing happens if I click on the link unfortunately.
  16. Hi, I seem to be having problems accessing a thread in the hormonal acne forum that was really really useful. It was called The Big Hormone Post for Both Men and Women started by a user called Green Gables. It comes up in searches but every time I click on it to read it I get this error message: Sorry, there is a problem The page you requested does not exist I was wondering if you know why this might be, whether it's a problem my end or a problem on the forum, and if there's any way of reinstating it as the information in it was so useful? Alternatively if it's working for everyone else could somebody maybe copy and paste it to me in a reply? Thanks
  17. Cleared my skin with saw palmetto and stinging nettle

Hi there, I've not really heard of using stinging nettle until reading your posts and now I'm very intrigued! I was wondering if you know anything about the mechanism by which it works or about whether root or leaf extract is better? I've just started taking 320mg a day of saw palmetto in divided doses. My skin is going cystic again after coming off my birth control 3 months ago which had done a wonderful job of getting me clear (and I am now starting to severely regret coming off but I was worried about the health risks). Really hoping saw palmetto will help but wondering about adding stinging nettle to it like you did. On another note, the Big Hormone Post seems to have disappeared! I remember reading it a while ago and thinking how useful it was but I can't seem to access it anymore, it keeps coming up with an error message, not sure if it's just me? Anyway, I wanted to know what other natural anti-androgens were recommended to combine with saw palmetto as I know it suggested two different herbs were more effective than one but I can't remember what the other suggestions were, or the types or doses or anything. Do you have any idea what's happened to it or remember what other alternatives were listed? Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance Really pleased you've managed to get clear the natural way as it gives me hope!
  18. Anybody had success with saw palmetto for female acne?

Yeh, I always give things 3 months before deciding if they're working or not, which is why I was really surprised this seemed to work so quickly but maybe it was a fluke! Just have to wait and see I guess. Let me know how you get on too.
  19. Thank you lovely people for all your recommendations! I will go shopping soon and see which of those suits me colour-wise and price-wise, although unfortunately we can't seem to get Neutrogena Healthy Skin here in the UK.
  20. (UK) dermatologist appointment

I got referred a couple of years ago and it took about 3 months from referral to appointment. Felt like an absolute age because my acne was so bad at that point that I wasn't even able to leave the house.
  21. BC Switch and Acne Backslide

I don't have a similar experience in terms of the pill specifically, but with my mental health meds I noticed a significant difference between different brands of the same medicine despite them having exactly the same active ingredients, so I think it's entirely possible. Hopefully going back to the original one will clear your skin up again.
  22. Calling all ladies

It's so thick and difficult to apply though Well I only use it overnight on top of my treatments, so the thickness doesn't really matter for me. I can see why you'd want something lighter for during the day but I just use a BB cream.
  23. Anybody had success with saw palmetto for female acne?

So.... I took saw palmetto for a week and didn't get a single new spot come up in that time. A week ago I stopped it because I thought it was causing my hair to fall out, but since stopping my hair has fallen out worse and my skin has positively erupted again, with cysts all along my jawline. So I've decided to start taking it again because I think the hair loss must be related to me stopping the pill 3 months ago rather than to the saw palmetto I was only taking for a week (otherwise it would have got better not worse when I stopped right?) Really hoping it will be as quick and effective on my skin as it was last time again. Will keep you all posted!
  24. Calling all ladies

Currently searching for a good foundation myself, but I really like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and Cetaphil Moisturising Lotion.
  25. Lost hope

I would say if you haven't tried the pill yet then that's definitely worth a shot before committing to Accutane, which is a very serious drug that for some people has serious and lifelong side effects. I had great success with Dianette and in combination with Lymecycline antibiotic and Epiduo topical it got me clear. And I had really bad and persistent cystic acne.
