unfortunately I haven't been able to be too consistant lately. I live in two places right now and forget them all the time. I am on a raw diet, but at the same time add in foods all the time in a very unorganized manner. It definately seemed when I first started using the broccoli pills consistently that after about 4-5 days I was getting no new pimple on my neck(front). This area previously seemed uneffected by my diet. The pills I take only have 225mg sprouted seeds, broccoli. They also have sprouted seeds of Cauliflower Organic, Kale Organic, Daikon Radish Organic, Cabbage Organic, Mustard Organic all containing 45mg. Its also very expensive though. I think I paid 27 for a bottle, but it retails for 60 and sells online for 40. I got them at Wild Oats. The company is New Chapter.

Highly Nutritious. 100% Vegetarian. For the past ten years, the scientific community has equated broccoli and the whole cruciferous family of vegetables with good health. Now, researchers have demonstrated that cruciferous vegetables' early sprouts contain the highest concentrations of their proven beneficial nutrients.

Broccoli is very rich in sulfur mainly because of it’s high sulforaphane content. This is also why broccoli smells bad sometimes when you cook it as it releases this sulfur in the form of gas. Broccoli is way more nutritious when cooked because cooking it makes these nutrients more bioavailable but there is one downside to cooking. Most of the sulfur escapes so this would not work the same as eating it raw. Broccoli is about 92% is water so when it is dried all these nutrients become more dense. So lets say when you dry broccoli down to 10% moisture, you can squeeze 8 ounces of broccoli into a 500mg capsule. Imagine if you use sprouts instead which have 20 to 50 times the concentration of sulforaphane and you got a pill that gives you more bioavailable sulfur that the famous MSM gram for gram!

I won’t go into too much detail about sulfur because if you don’t know much about it by now then your acne isn’t that bad. I really think that it is the sulfur compounds doing most of the work since I am already on a low iodine diet (remember that iodine makes it worse but not the cause). This needs to be investigated a little further.

First of all this would be a good time to use that search feature of this board because there is a wealth of information here and google is another good place to start. Try "MSM acne forum" to weed out all the ads.

Sulfur has been used for years both internally and externally for its healing and anti-inflamitory properties. Personally I couldn't stomach the stuff but I did use one of it's cousins NAC. Your body needs a decent amount of sulfur to ward off bacteria and fungi and our diets usally don't provide enough especially if you don't like onions. If it's a veggie and it stinks it may have sulfur. Our hair, nails and skin all rely on this compound to be in a heathy state. MSM is very good for this but you got to ingest a lot to see any benifit and take it with lots of vitamin C. Check this board for recommended doses.

In the mean time keep checking this thread for updates about this broccoli thing. Sorry if so short but it is bed time for me.

Just think if a plant learned to fight off infection and parasites, we can either learn from it or eat it! wink.gif

I went to the Vitamin Shoppe today! I bought Broccoli Pills, and I also bought Vitamin A 10,000 IU (in beta-carotene form). I'm not sure if I should take both or maybe just take one at a time for a week or two and see how it works. I also bought Vitamin A and E oil for topical treatment and I think I'm going to get some Tea Tree oil too to use as a disinfectant. I hope something works!

10,000IU of vitamin A? but the recommended daily amount of vit A from all sources is only 2500IU... and i remember hearing that it becomes toxic in larger doses because it is fat soluble and can build up in the body. are you sure taking that much is gonna be ok?

its beta carotene form so the body only takes what it needs or something like that. Its not as toxic as regular vitamin a.

I would try one at a time. First try cutting out the iodine and eating broccoli pills. My daughter saw a big difference in 4 days. If that doesn't work and you have checked to see if your testosterone levels are not too high then try tthe vit A. It is very similar in toxicity as its derivitive accutane. Who knows how much is the right anount for you. I think mercola.com has infrmation on this. Good Luck.

Ok guys I got some bad news...

I lowered my dose of the broccoli pills down to 2 a day and now I am starting to break out again! I also started taking 200mcg of chromium after breakfast and lunch so that could be the cause as well. I've had it! evil.gif I'm gonna start taking 6 a day and dropping everything else. Before I was taking 2 broccoli in the morning and two in the evening with a good one-a-day multi but now I will take only just the Vitamin Shoppe brand broccoli pills. Let's see what happens now. So wish me luck. Depending on the outcome of this experiment I may try the sprouted kind to lower the amount needed.

BTW still cyst free, just painful ugly pimples. So at least that is some improvement.

I noticed a small difference when I started adding Broccoli Pills (2 a day) and occasionally fresh broccoli to my diet, it must be the extra sulfur. I never strayed from the CSR while adding Broccoli Pills to my arsenal, but I did notice the couple of times that I slipped from using the pills I had minor breakouts.

I think it's much better to eat broccoli fresh and raw, but the pills are very convenient. I'll try taking extra with what I have left and see what difference it makes. I'm using Now brand Broccoli Concentrate.

I know this is a little early but after dropping everything but the broccoli pills my skin is already starting to show improvement biggrin.gif I read somewhere that the sulforaphane is released when the plant flesh of the broccoli is damaged or ingested and the sulforaphane goes to work immediately. This would make sense because when I had those weird break outs that cleared right away, it may have corresponded with my ingestion of the capsules when I only took 2 a day. Now I take 2 caps in the morning, 2 caps after lunch, and 2 caps after dinner and now my skin looks better than it did this morning. A few nasty pimples that formed have started to heal. This is amazing. It took forever for anything else to work like this. It took a whole week with massive doses of B5 (14 grams a day) to see any improvement.

Today I was really hungry and busy so I ate fast food all day today eusa_sick.gif and I am still clearing! Wow! I had been eating pretty heathy the rest of the week but broke out before this. My stupid back cleared up quite a bit too! Weird? Whats nice is that I know that back is the first to break out then my face but now it's clearing up fast so hopefully my face will follow. I had a huge pimple on my face that was starting to turn into a cyst that is now a dried up prune of a pimple! My face was even noticably less oily!

This is very exciting so I will definitely keep this thread updated and post more info as I find it.

Here's some food for thought:

http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=9

The above link shows that broccoli has a lot of the vitamins and minerals needed for acne sufferers. Lots of vitamin A and C. Remember when I calculated that 1 broccoli capsule = 1 cup (8 ounces) of broccoli. Also don't forget that it's most likely the sulforaphane doing most of the work at stopping acne.

Hey every I just thought I give an update of my broccoli experience.

IT'S STILL WORKING!!! eusa_dance.gif

My skin hasn't been this clear since I was taking tons of vitamins, minerals, herbs, torturing myself with healthy only foods, and lots of BP.

Yes I am still getting pimples but they are no longer cystic biggrin.gif and mostly body acne. My face just has healing ones currently and that one pimple that I thought was going to turn into a cyst dried up and didn't even leave a scar (just some crusty skin for now thats going away). I am very pleased with the results of the experiment so far.

I am still taking 6 capsules a day = about 48oz of broccoli and that's it internally, nothing else.

Externally just Lever 2000 soap on my body and Neutragena Pore Refining cleanser. BP only if I need it.

sorry bro, I just saw this. Well I was having great results with them, as far as I could tell, I just wasn't able to take them consistently, skipped a few days when I couldn't get home. So I am now taking them again and having fantastic results. I am on a strict diet. mostly raw, but I have been cheating. Cheating to me isn't eating cookies or bread, its more like eating dried fruit that wasn't sun dried, or eating organic peanut butter, or dried sweet potatoes, brazilian nuts that weren't shelled by hand, frozen protein, and salt on my raw beef. It really sucks when that counts as me not following my diet. I have also just started MSM, Glutamine, and hemp protein. Considering all the things I have been eating that would normally make me break out really bad, the broccolli must be helping me out a ton. The biggest thing I notice on the broccoli is the brerakouts on my the front of my neck. I usually would get pimples there even while following the diet and not breaking out anywhere else. When I was on the broccoli pills the first time I got no new pimples on my neck. I then stopped taking them and broke out on my neck.

When I say my acne is bad, I mean untreated I have very severe acne. Not too many cysts but whitehead ALL OVER MY FACE. every 1/2 inch there would be a pimple. My diet and now the broccoli and tea tree oil keep this at bay.

I can attest to this; my neck cleared up very quickly when I started taking broccoli pills, and no new acne has formed since. I was only taking 1.7 grams a day, but since reading this topic have doubled my dosage. It's too early to say what impact that has made, but I'll get back to that in about a week.

Here's another interesting tidbit of information relating to broccoli:

In the link below are some more benefits to eating broccoli particularly broccoli sprouts. A few things stand out that may benefit acne sufferers.

1. Boosts and helps create the phase 2 enzymes that the body normally makes to get rid of free radicals. This phase 2 enzyme is known to be the body's best defense mechanism for eliminating toxic and carcinogenic substances from the body. These enzymes are created by the liver.

2. Stimulates other natural antioxidents.

3. Raises and replinshes the body's glutathione production. Many studies have shown that many acne sufferers have lower glutathione levels and when these levels are restored their acne status starts to improve.

http://www.broccosprouts.com/health/sgsfactsheet.htm

Another possible effect that broccoli may have on the body is as being the ultimate non-resistant antibiotic. As shown in the link below, the sulforaphane in broccoli kills ulcer causing stomach bacteria but I believe that it may kill p. acnes bacteria as well. There have been no studies on this but if it can kill a highly resistant bacteria in you stomach and works on all of the body's cells, why not the acne bacteria in your skin.

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlere...gi?artid=124299

This is all that I could find that could even remotely relate to what we are using it for. If anyone else has anymore info, please feel free to post it.

Broccoli is starting to look like a good all-round acne treatment as it even has vitamin A and C, Zinc, B vitamins, and omega 3 fatty acids as well. Maybe we should try some topically?

i've been trying this for about 5 days, i do feel some effect to my face. I feel a tightening of the skin, a little less oily, and new acne seems to dry out and heal instead of getting worse. In terms of preventing acne from forming, i haven't got to that part yet but so far it seems to be positive, knock on wood.

I'm using Vitamin shoppe broccoli 500 mg , one tablet in the morning and one at night.
