Scars are ugly, especially when they have been around for decades. Doctors say nothing really covers them. I've tried DermaBlend and several others, but they don't cover up the scars.
Anyone have any suggestions for face make-up that actually works?

Hey Marcia,
I'm a make-up artist and I hope that I can help you out with some tips. First of all, if the scar is 'depressed' in the skin, that is if it makes an indentation, there is no make-up in the world that can cover this up. There are, however, cosmetic injectables that can help as well as laser resurfacing, dermabrasion,etc.

As far as make-up goes, covering minor scars and discolorations, a great product to use is MAC concealer. It is jojoba oil based so it will not clog pores Before you apply any foundation or concealer however it is important to prime your skin. AFter moisturizing, sweep a light layer of Milk of Magnesia over the skin with a makeup wedge. This will smooth the skin, minimize the appearance of poors and keep oilies at bay. Next , apply a thin layer of foundation to the skin as needed. Always apply concealer after foundation. As for concealer it is important to use a concealer brush when applying this product to get precise results. the mistake many people make is applying to much concealer and then rubbing it in a moving it around. the correct technique is to layer extremely minute amounts onto the area to be concealed in a 'stippling' action with the brush. the brush should be about 1cm in width and with reasonably firm bristles. Some brushes can be pricy but they are worth the investment. Expect to pay 15 dollars or more for a good concealer brush. MAC has some good ones, as do other brands (NARS, Smashbox, Laura Mercier, etc.) shop around. after you have 'stippled' on the concealer you'll need to set it with a transparent translucent powder. A fantastic product is made by the Australian brand "jurlique" and is called Rose Silk Dust. It is a colorless loose powder which won't add any pigment to the skin and simply acts to 'set' the concealer. Otherwise you could try MAC Blot powder. good luck to you!

Hello Marcia,

Personally I use Revlon onestep makeup compact foundation. I gradually build up the amount of foundation and I manage to hide my scars and red marks with a quite natural finish. The good thing is that this product is very well tolerated by my skin. Hope this will help!

I have yet to find a foundation that covers my acne scarring. I absolutely HATE wearing makeup because I feel like it really aggravates my skin and makes it worse, which is no fun.
Still looking for a makeup that will cover but won't irritate my skin after it's taken off. For me, the WORST part of my day is knowing that I have to go home and remove all that makeup---ughhh
