Wow I have to try this, I'm always getting shiny throughout the day and its soo cheap too! Anyways, I was reading all the questions you guys posted and I'd say, apply your moisturizer first like you would before any kind of face primer. I would also only apply the MOM in your t-zone areas or where ever you get shiny, not the entire face so you can avoid looking chalky.

I bought some MOM The Original today. I read all the comments here and I was convinced it's at least worth a try! eusa_angel.gif I'm going to use it as a mask. I'll post an update soon. Hopefully I get some positive results.

BTW - I'm 27 yr old female, have occasional cyst breakouts. Right now I have a pretty bad breakout..ugh annoying!! lol. I think my breakouts are mainly triggered by stress. Crossing my fingers this stuff works for me!!

-UPDATE 5/11/09- I love this stuff as a primer. Really cool. I also used this as a 30 min mask and it makes your skin feel really nice and most of the oilyness go away. I havent tried sleeping with it on though. Overall..love it. Much better than those super expensive primers!

This stuff sounds great, I've been looking for this all over the place. I checked in Belfast (the capital city) and couldn't find it anywhere. Then I went to the tiny little corner shop in my village and spotted it. Only problem was it was behind the counter and the guy at the till used to bully me in school, not sure I particularly want to ask a bully for a laxative... I'll just have to wait until someone else is working the till *sigh*

I definitely just ran out to the closest Safeway to pick me up some of this. I'm actually wearing it as we speak smile.gif

I'll let you know how it goes, so far I've only put two thin layers and will be washing it off when I hop in the shower.

Milk of Magnesia is alkaline. Your skin is acidic and is supposed to remain acidic; applying alkaline products to your naturally acidic face is going to alter your pH and altered pH can lead to further breakouts, dryness, or irritation.

Why pH is important

You're totally correct Wynne. After I applied this my face felt a little dry, as I'm sure everyone who uses this does. Although after I used my bert's bees toner which restored your HP (or helps) my face then felt much better and refreshed. So far I like what MoM has done and how it feels, and it's only day one LOL!

I just started using (unflavored) Milk of Magnesia on my face and wow, it has made a huge difference!

I love it.

I've tried everything, and I mean EVERYTHING from clearasil to astringents to otc medications to script antibiotics (oral and topical) to retin A to differin to apple cider vinegar to baking soda masks, clay masks, i even once thought about putting plaster all over my face (it has intense drying properties). Sometimes I feel like I'm going to lose my mind!

Milk of magnesia really seems to do the trick. Not only does it dry up the oilyness, but it also soothes which is a huge problem for me. When my skin breaks out, it puffs up and all chaos breaks loose. This stuff is helping -- BIG TIME.

For anyone that has tried it all, give this a shot. Its worth the $4 tops that you'll pay for a bottle.

Shake it up well! Apply with a cotton ball. Let dry for 20 mins. Wash off with a gentle cleanser.

Sometimes, near my period, I leave a thin layer on all night.

I haven't tried it as a "primer" yet, but will today.

I am in my late twenties and have seasonal acne. My skin is clear all year round and then right when it becomes summer my skin breaks out . I get white heads and cystic acne(usually 2-4 at a time). Once the summer is over my skin clears up, but I have scars on my face to deal with. I've been do the DR and he gives me medicine that works for about a week...and then I start to suffer again. NOT THIS TIME!

On tuesday I was doing some research about how my diet is related to my acne and I came across something that said Milk causes acne. So i did a google search on that...and MOM curing acne came up on that search. So I started searching MOM and acne. That day I went to the drugstore and bought a bottle of Original MOM.

I put two layers of MOM on my face that night and slept with it on. The next morning I saw a huge difference. The cystic acne that hurt the day before no longer hurt and reduced in size, another one was almost flat, and my whitehead was gone. Wow, I was impressed. I decided to wear MOM to work as well. I put my face lotion, Sun Block and a thin layer of MOM over that to work. My face did not get oily at all throughout the day. Also, my skin felt tighter, smoother and the pores were definitely smaller.

I have now used it for three days and three nights and am going to continue to use this. I will keep everyone updated on my progress, but as of now this is a MIRACLE for me (knock on wood) biggrin.gif .

P.S. since I read everyone's posts on here and decided to use it...I thought I would join just to share my results..and hope that others try it as well.

I have been following Paula Begouin's advice for using Milk of Magnesia as a mask and makeup primer. I now use it at night, covering my whole face once, letting it dry and applying another coat. Both are always thin coats. A little goes a long way with this. Then in the morning I apply two coats also before my makeup. My makeup doesnt get oily until around 5! and I wakeup at 7! Plus I have very oily skin! My skin is clearing up also! Just wanted to share and hope someone will try this!

Do you use this in place of moisturizer or on top of it?

I have read some reviews not on the acne.org site but other forums that it did not work to reduce the oilnes on the . Are there more recent reviews about milk of magnesia with people who have extremely oily facial skin like me?

EDIT I also read that milk of magnesia isnt that good for your skin in the long run? Anyone used it for a long period?

what if you were to use ACV? which can bring back the balance of PH?

Been using MoM for a few weeks and highly recommend it! It was actually recommended to me by my pharmacist, who learned about it at an "Alternatives to Accutane" pharmacy continuing education seminar, so for those afraid of pH effects, it appears to have at least some legitimate recognition in the medical world.

Here's a few reasons why I like it:
- cheap
- available at drug store or grocery (get the Original formula)
- doesn't bleach clothing
- absorbs excess oil all day (if you have face acne)
- smells nice, while vinegar smells kind of unpleasant
- soothes skin and reduces redness, whereas for me vinegar stung a bit and increased redness
- it worked a miracle for me when I was ready to throw in the towel. I'd tried a lot of things and my doctor said I was out of options (I tried vinegar, BP, tea tree oil, oral meds, topical meds...)

I had stubborn back acne that got worse and better but never came close to clearing up for 6 years and this is the first thing that has cleared up my skin at last. Here's how I use it.

At night before I go to bed, I wash my back and then use a fresh cotton ball to liberally apply the milk of magnesia onto my back. It dries after a couple minutes and then you can put a shirt on and go to bed, or put on a tank top while you're waiting for it to dry. That's it! Nice things about the milk of magnesia is it doesn't bleach clothing or dry out the skin, is super cheap ($3/bottle), and can be used in conjunction with oral treatments or underneath another topical treatment if you want.

As for timeframe, I've been using it nightly for about 2 or 3 weeks and since then I've gotten no new spots and the old spots are slowly but surely fading away. The old spots are slow to fade, but I think within another 3 weeks they will be all gone with no scars or shadows.

Glad it helped you. Indeed good to hear it has some recognition in the medical field.

Does anyone know of any downsides to this? It's working so well for me (who, according to my dermatologist, has tried absolutely EVERY prescription medicine except Accutane) that I'm a little suspicious of it. It's not dangerous in the long-term or anything, is it?

Well, I just tried some of this as a spot treatment today and I'm amazed. I put it on this afternoon around 4:00, and it's almost midnight now. It brought a smallish cyst to a head within a few hours, I (gently) popped it, put another dab of MoM on it, and now you wouldn't know I had a zit there earlier. eusa_shifty.gif

I'm not sure the best way to use it for my whole face. Is it best as a 30-minute mask, or overnight, or what? Should it be used everyday, or just a few times a week?

Hey for those of you who had success with the milk of magnesia what sort of cleanser did you use or what regimen did you follow? I started using it as a mask for 20 minutes at night and it seems to be working well but its very drying. I use a sacylic (sp?) acid cleanser before the mask and I"m thinking the combination of both is too harsh.
