I am eager to start weightlifting on a regular basis in order to gain weight and put on muscle, but the majority of dietary advice given on this forum goes against everything i have learnt about bodybuilding diets, after reading a lot of these threads i often find myself wondering if there are any foods left that are safe to eat! I have to admit, i find this forum less than encouraging in regards to my weight gain aspirations.

What i would like to know is if there are any diets that would help me gain weight while minimising acne production, are there any weightlifters in this forum that have managed to pull it off?

the bulk of bodybuilding diets requires at least 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, and twice that in carbs, along with plenty of vitamins and minerals.
milk and pasta play a big role, but i have read that these are not good for acne.

I have been on accutane for the last 3 and half months and experienced a tiny breakout about a week ago, i am convinced that diet has a role to play in my acne, i started using whey protein but stopped quickly when my skin became red and blotchy, so thats another blow to my diet, as it would have been a quick and efficient way of getting enough protein.

Thanks for taking the time to read this
please help me out here, i am at my wits end! sad.gif

There are other forms of protein. At www.trueprotein.com you can order micellar casein or egg protein, be wary of the taste on the former.

Additionally there are some vegetarian foods that are surprisingly protein rich. Check out tofu and lentils, both are loaded with protein.

I won't lie, it's very tough to pull this off, I end up eating ALOT of chicken, which isn't nearly as good for growth as red meat, but it's easy, and I think it might be better for acne, I'm not entirely sure.

BTW, if you're trying to gain weight you really want to hit a minimum of 2g / lb., closer to 3 or 4 really.

I would recommend you to eat a lot of nuts, with fruit. Like have an apple and eat nuts. Brazil nuts and almonds would be best. Brazil nuts are one of the best protein sources in the world. The only problem with the nuts is that it is high in fat. That is why trainers say to eat chicken and fish and egg whites, rather than steaks and cheese. Dairy is not good for building muscles. And pasta isn't either. Try the Brazil Nuts. Even if there is quite a lot of fat. And eat some white chicken and fish. I would warn you about accutane and weight lifting. I tried to weight lift, and followed a strict diet that was protein enriched while on accutane. My muscles got affected, first they did not grow and they cramped up a lot.

3 or 4 grams is rediculous. Protein is expensive and your wasting your money if your getting that much protein per pound.

Ok so if I'm getting this right, you want to put on muscle and cut out diary?

Well youre going to need a protein shake if you've read some other ppl's workout plans. And almost all of them recommend taking Whey. Now the problem for us acne sufferers is that whey is a protein that is a by-product of the cheese making process (mmmm cheese taste so good...ok back to topic). There are two kinds of whey avaliable: concentrate or isolate. If you are lactose intolerant, then you want to go with isolate as it has less lactose in it.

Most ppl recommend 100% Optimum brand Whey. However that is concentrate whey. Now there are so many isolate whey brands and which one to choose? Check out: http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/protein/...n-compare-3.htm

According to them Zero Carb Isolate is the best and that is the one I use. Matter of fact I'm going to go drink one right after this. Anywyays hope that helped.

Remember to stick with your lifting plan and g double o d luck!!!!

BTW, if you decide to go with the Zero Carb Isolate, you'll get them much cheper on ebay. I got mine for US $ 57.00 bucks for 7.5lb. And GNC sells 3 pounds for US $ 54.00!!!

Thanks for the help guys, I think i'm going to have to rely on tuna, chicken and nuts to get the bulk of my protein, i'm not going to chance it with whey when tuna is just as good a source of it, thanks for the info on whey Zack1234, but i live in England and ordering whey abroad is a load of hassle to be honest, it's the carbs i'm worried about, contrary to what you say bloodcries, pasta is a good source of carbohydrates, which are essential to gaining muscle and weight, to be honest, i think this will take a lot of negotiating in order to get a good diet down, but does anyone know any good sources of calcium that aren't dairy? Thanks

Dark green veggiues like kale, bok choy, brocoli, etc... Of course you have to eat a shit load of themto get the calcium required especially a growing male who weightlifts and puts extra strain on his structure. I'd say get some calcium citrate with magnesium. Honestly if your not eating any dairy that's probably the best way.

Hemp protein is great. Instead of amking things with normal flour use help flour. It's nutty and has a butt load of protein.

Oatmeal!

(erm, for carbs, not calcium).

Thanks for the suggestions! I think i'll look into a calcium substitute, and the vegetables you mentioned are good aswell. Oatmeal for carbs is a brilliant idea, since i can make it using water instead of milk.

BTW, does accutane not affect your joints and muscles? I myself am reluctant to go on accutane for several reasons, not the least of which being that I'm afraid I'd have to stop lifting for the duration.

On the days you work out, eat oatmeal in the mornings. I suggest buying a protien shake brand, Nitrotech works well, but don't drink it too often. All those refined protiens and sugars really make you break out, plus most shakes have chocolate as well. Only drink a shake after you lift. You should eat lots of tuna, fish (not fried fish though) chicken and lean beef. Lean beef is great. Avoid pork, especially bacon. Also, I know its hard but try to use brown bread for sandwichs or snacks if you can. A typical day might look like this:

Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ Nuts and Fruit, Orange Juice

Morning Snack (Around 10AM): Fruit Salad, Egg Sandwich

Lunch: (2) Turkey or Tuna Sandwich, Pasta Salad, Normal Salad, Banana

Afternoon Snack: Vegatables, what ever you want smile.gif .

Dinner: Grilled Meat, Vegatables, small amount of carbs (sweet potatoes, rice ect.)

Remember, eat a lot! Eat more than you think is enough. The main mistake people make is that they don't eat enough and work out too often. Three times a week build you fine. Any more and your muscles only get toned, not big and strong. This worked for me, good luck to you!

Ya but you're getting shit all for veggies, fruits, and fiber. In fact it looks like your lacking in many vitamins and nutrients.

Drink raw eggs.

Either the egg whites or the yellow part, depending on what you need the protein for.

I cannot for the life of me eat the white jelly like egg whites. I puncture the yolk and drink that. has zero taste, at least for me.. Tons of good protein... Provides at least a quick 20 grams of protein, if need be.

I've even see the eggwhites sold like a water bottle like container at health food stores.. it has like 50 grams of protein... Rather costly though.

You should always eat the egg whites, not the yolk. Don't consume more than two yolks a day on a regular basis, every yolk is absolutely loaded with cholesterol. Pretty much every day an omelette is part of one of my meals, usually I just use 6 eggs but scoop out all but two of the yolks.

You can get synthetic egg whites in liquid form with no danger of salmonella, but I think it tastes like crap personally and I see no advantage over protein shakes (unless whey breaks you out).
