Don't you think the word acne is a bit....harsh.
ACNE! can't they use a different word than acne.
When you hear acne vulgaris (sp) you think its like a fucking plague that you wear. Its horrific. I hate the word....

When someone says simple... it sounds like pimple... ect....

whatever..im done talking to myself

Hmm. Interesting point. They could something like "falafel" instead. "Hey everyone, I've got falafel!" "Yeah, falafel's a real killer."

Forgive me. I'm slightly off today.

Yeah, "vulgaris" contains "vulgar". How nice is that?!

It's pretty clear that the people who name diseases and conditions aren't the one's who are suffering them. Like, for people with big noses that want to get a nose job. The doctors perform rhinoplasty. Rhino! Isn't the person already self-conscious enough? Do they really have to inslut them further by comparing them to a rhinocerous? wink.gif

Um. I think the impact and embarrassment of the condition directly influences our perception of it's "vulgarity" (to coin a pun).

I've often thought this about swear words, I think the main reason we think "fuck" sounds offensive is from its meaning. I mean, it's hardly onomatopoeic...
If acne were actually called "tract" I think the same uncomfortableness would arise.

Yeah, I had to recondition my last girlfriend to the word 'fuck'. But, after a while, she really liked it because it was associated with something good.

It's called acne vulgaris cause in Latin vulgar means "common", so it's common acne. The common people and their practices were repellent to snobby aristocrats and vulgar came to have its present meaning. Have you ever heard of Vulgar Latin? It just means the Latin that the normal people spoke, while High Latin was the language of literature and such. Rhino is a Greek/Latin prefix or stem meaning "nose". Thus rhinovirus (common cold) and rhinoplasty.
