I don't think it's the way you apply it that makes you look like a freak.
It just sounds like you need new makeup.
A lot of foundations/concealers have an orange-y base.
I've found that these concealers aren't orangey at all:
*maybelline coverstick
*prescriptives camoflauge cream
*revlon color stay concealer
These foundations aren't orangey either:
*prescriptives virtual skin [many color choices available]
*almay wake up call
*estee lauder [although I don't use this anymore, too expensive]
Buy a new concealer and foundation that way you won't have to worry.
When I apply makeup I do it in natural light.
I just put on a small amount of foundation
and then dab on concealer where needed..
Just don't pile on the concealer too much or it looks unnatural.

I agree you should probably get new coverstick, but if you still have problems, I find putting moisturizer on first, and waiting until it's nearly dry helps the makeup go on better and not look cakey..maybe dampen your brush as well so you can soften the edges around where you apply the makeup..?

I used to have the same problem with drug store brands of concealer. What you need to do is got to a department store make-up counter (I love MAC) and have them find a perfect match for your skin colouring.
While the product may be more expensive it is definately worth it because the coverage and colour are sooooooooo much better.
I also prefer to use a tiny brush to apply the concealer directly to the pimple then gently blend with a sponge or finger tip - qpplication is much more precise and natural looking.
