My mum was pretty supportive when I got acne...it was she who actually suggested going to derms and recommended skin creams etc. But sometimes I guess she always studied my face kinda closely that I got even more self-conscious than I usually was. It's not so bad now, coz I'm at college and away from home...and overall, I can't really complain.

Anyways, I was just wondering whether your relationships w/ ur folks changed substantially over the course of you getting acne.

Parents Relationship does change. Sometimes they are not a suportive as we want the to be. Regardless of what they think of you and what they want you to do, they are your parents and the love you no matter how you look.

my parents are the worst....i had to suggest everything and when i ask her about new things she always says "dont worry about it, i had it ten times worse"....or shell ALWAYS bring up my face like..."why are you eating that, then you complain martina"...i fucking hate it so much...she doesnt understand that im insecure and that bringing it up all the time makes me feel like ass.....maybe thats why i hardly talk to my parents....they think im over-reacting, and they also put me down all the time without even realizing it...

Mine just seem to comment occaisionally eg.they r looking good/bad today otherwise they just leave it up to me to do whatever i want about it. Can't quite decide whether i would want them more involved or not........

smile.gif Not unhelpful! Just telling it like it is. My mum can go overboard w/ looks an all - she's really pretty and was more of a girly girl when she was younger - and probably wants me to be the same. So sometimes it can get rather frustrating for me...especially when I got acne.

My mother only ever said anything once and that was "wow do you want makeup to cover that up?!" and of course I said no... Makeup alone probably would make it worse most likely, at least the crap she has lying around, and it's not "acceptable" for boys to use makeup it seems. rolleyes.gif

My father is like.. the practical economist, he would say "Who cares about acne, why spend that much money on your appearance." Also my father would most likely see me as less of a "man" if I were to bring up how I feel about it. There were other examples when I shyed away from something and he kind of sighs and rolls his eyes - especially if I'm too considerate of others about something.

So, no go from my parents.

MY father can't stand me complaining about anything and gets really engry if I complain about anything ... so I don't like about acne to him. He is a great father though and I love him , and is interested in me going to derms etc.

My mother is the most supportive, she also tries her best to make my acne clear with derms and facials. SHe's the one I told to when I'm down (besides here). The only prob is that she sometimes brings it up (that my skin does not look good) whenever I have a horrible acne breakout (like today) and I don't like to think about acne those days.

Oh don't get me wrong, my father is a wonderful parent in most situations, but like you said... I think he and probably a lot of "manly" men in general see any kind of shyness or issue with oneself as an extreme weakness that's not understandable or practical.

If I ever said anything that showed doubt to him, I think he'd be upset. Or if I wore makeup, he'd have an issue most likely. He's pretty much the same with my sister too though... I admire the fact that appearance seems to mean absolutely nothing to him, but still... In these cases he's not the most supportive, or maybe he is and I'm wrong for feeling down about it? confused.gif

My parents are stil trying to make up for their mistake 2 years back by trying to give me advice about acne

2 years ago when i had 10 pimples and was concerned they said "Oh son it'll pass in a year" So i tried to wait it out

2 years later I have 300 pimples and my parents are now trying to give me advice from their "experience", they dont understand how many sites books videos ive watched about acne and they think that they're derms by telling me that eating more veggies will fuckin help me? My parents are just too full of themselves to admit that they cant fuckin handle the fact that it's their fault im like this.

well.. my mum brought me to a doctors numerous times.. but she started to .. give up? I guess? she started to not care about it, and even when i asked to see a derm again, she would say that it wouldnt matter because nothing has worked.

yea, that kinda hurt. =(

so my acne got worse and worse. until finally my dad couldn't take it anymore and sent me to a derm (parents are split, i was living with my mum but recently moved with my dad). even before my dad kept buying me new skin care kits and picking up new acne medications and lotions from Japan.

I'd have to say, my dad was more supportive than my mom. Probably because my mom has never had acne problems and my dad did. =T

He's just worried about me going on Accutane because he doesn't like the side effects.

hmm...mums can sometimes say stuff they don't really mean. they don't realise what a massive effect commens can have on you. One day i was buzzing because i thought i had cleared up a little. I went downstairs just about to go out and she said 'your face is a mess isn't it'.

take it on the chin

my dad never mentions my pimples except one time when i was 15 and had beautiful clear skin but one day i tried to squeeze a blackhead from the middl eof my nose and it became a big pimple! smacked in the middle of my nose!!!!!!!!!!
i was devastated..u know how high schoolers can be so dramatic....

the ffirst and last pimple comment from daddy dearest is....everyone gets pimples...its no big deal..dont be embarassed and dont cut school for it. it wil heal really soon.

my mom is the bitch of all bitches...always telling me my skins fucked up and im fucking it up more by eating chips and all the nitty gritty fried stuff...my moms always tell me im fat too. Like in the middle of dinner after i've taken like 2 bites of food she goes and says across the dining table "ames, you are getting soooo fat..you'd better stop eating so much"....how horrible is that!

im only fat cuz i inheritted her fat genes...fucking bitch...prob got my acne from her too!

=( reading some of these posts made me feel incredibly sad....

Those of you whose parents have said such insensitive things..I'm sorry.

Try not to take it to heart, they love you-they just don't know any better.

=) just hoping to make it feel a little better....
