This is the wrong form to be putting this in but I figured there would be more females than males in here so it would be the place to ask. I'm very frustrated because I can't seem to control monthly break outs due to my period, does anyone has any tips or suggestions??

Thanks Driftwood

I used to get monthly breakouts,
but now I just get one or two small pimples, and none at times.
I think it's a mixture of the products I use on my face
and that I'm now taking yasmin [this helps to keep skin relatively clear]

I use a really gentle face wash [sage sensitive skin facial wash, it's soap free]
and if I feel like my skin is gonna be gross
then I make sure to do a good mask for pimples
[homemade mask using apples and honey, or strawberries works]

I'd suggest making a mask [do it twice a week]
and icing your face everyday starting a week before your period.
[just put a few cubes in a ziplock bag and hold it on your face
until the ice has melted, I do it after my shower]

And if you're not entirely opposed to birth control pills
I'd suggest trying out yasmin..

Thanks you very much, I'm actually going on birthcontrol very soon and was wondering what I should take to treat acne. I don't have bad acne at all I just get enough to make me want to peel off all my skin and wear a mask. Nothing that isnt hidden by well applied make up but ya know I want to feel pretty without it.

Thanks Driftwood

A higher dose estrogen birth control can clear you up pretty fast. Yasmin is also effective and contains a small amount of Spirolactone. Which can also be taken separately and can clear up hard to deal with skin.

I don't advise going on birth control JUST for acne unless it's already pretty bad. I went on it for mild acne and just a week in my acne is moderate-severe on my chin...which was previously clear. Besides, it does have annoying side effects for some people. But perhaps that is just my bad experience with it making me feel that way.

I would have to agree with KatharineAnn here. Taking birth control for acne should be done only after consulting with a dermatologist and probably it's best to get a workup done to see if any of your hormone levels are out of whack so you can get birth control specifically tailored to that problem. I tried taking Yasmin to see if it would help with monthly breakouts I was getting and not more than 2 weeks into taking the pills, I was getting these horrid cramps when I had just had my monthly visitor a week before. So there was really no reason for me to be having them, but they were happening every hour or so and were bad enough to make me double over in pain. They were also waking me up at night. Never happened to me before, so I said screw Yasmin.

As soon as I stopped taking the Yasmin, cramps went away. Kinda scary to think those pills could have caused that. The zits were a lot easier to deal with than horrendously painful cramps. So make sure you know what you're getting into before you try birth control just for acne. Birth control has many side effects that can be a lot more bothersome than acne, even though acne is a huge pain in the @ss itself.

The thing with birth control pills is it's better
not to take anyones story and assume it will happen to you.

Birth control pills have a numerous amount of different effects.
I used to be a peer counselor in sexuality and from talking to everyone
it was extremely obvious that everyone reacts differently.

I personally take birth control pills for the reason it was made for,
and it happened to help my skin stay clear.
Ortho and yasmin are the two b.c. pills known to help skin.
Each one may have different side effects, or may have none at all.
I personally had/have no side effects on yasmin or on ortho.

I'm sure you realize it's entirely your decision.
In the worst case if you have side effects then you stop taking them,
or switch to a different kind and try those out instead.

Yeah I am a guy but one of my female friends told me there is this medicine that controls you period and make you have only 4 periods yearly. You might want to check up on that. You can see the commercial or surf it on the net and ask your doc.
