Hello. I 've been on the anti-biotic called Keflex (a.k.a cephalexin) for about the last 13 months. I have been using this in conjunction with Tazaorac. The combo seems to control my moderate acne. I, however, stopped using tazorac about a month-and-half back because I felt that the taz was causing my skin to look/feel unhealthy. That, however, is beside the point. Around Septemeber of 2004 (this past Sept.), I noticed that my hair was slowly beginning to thin and fall out. It has since continued to fall out since then. Although i am not 'bald' my hair is much thiner than waht it used to be. I underwent a thyroid test recently to see if my hairloss was attributed to some thryroid-related problem, and it isn't. I can't really think of any other reason for my hari to start falling out besides the long-term usage on anti-biotics. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else? PLease, any and all comments/suggestions are most appreciated.

On a related note, because my hair has significantly thinned (maybe because of the anti0biotic), I wanted to come off the anti-biotic. However, I have read that coming off anti-biotics can cause a massive recurrance of acne. I read before in one of MAYA'S posts about probiotics (primal defense). She told somebody that they should take primal defense and suggested a dosage for them. Please Maya, if you read this, please post that dosage again. Thank you all.

Maya doesn't post here anymore. You probably have terrible candida if you have been on antibiotics that long. Threelac works faster than Primal Defense, though it is an awesome product. However, Threelace starts to work immediately, whereas PD tends to work over time. I have used probably 10 different probiotics and also had a recent recurrence of candida, however, I have found Threelac to be the best at getting it under control, along with oil of oregano.

I was on antibiotics for 11 years off and on, and I never had hair loss, but I did have my joints lock up in my right hand due to severe liver toxicity from antibiotics abuse, along with a horrifically weakened immune and central nervous system.

Do a google for more information on Threelac.

depressed...I think the tazorac is causing your hair loss. It is a vitamin a derivitive. I am an old accutane user and was using tazorac again and my hair really started falling. i quit about a month ago. if you go to \
www.keratin.com and do a search on differin (which is another acne treatment that is vitamin a) some people have posted there that it made their hair fall out. the administrator agrees that tazorac or differin or retin a could definately be the culprit...please stay off of it..i think your hair will return. dont take ANY vitamins with vitamin a in it at all. check your multi vitamins, dont take fish oil etc..

If he's never been on Accutane, then I'm not sure I agree that Tazorac alone could cause these types of problems with hair loss. I've never heard of Tazorac ALONE causing this.

Hi, see my post below antibiotic's

I'm not sure if my receeding hair line has anything to do with anti biotics. I've taken them for about 4 years now, and I wasnt receeding before i started taking them. I've not stopped taking antibiotics completley. I now take vitamin supplements daily, to try and cure my acne.

there are also people on the web that have lost hair from retin a...look at

www.heralopecia.com

on the site that lists medications that can cause hair loss retininoids are listed. tazorac, differin, retin a are all from the vitamin a family....

Well, since both candida overgrowth and Vitamin A derivatives cause hair loss, it's hard to say for certain which has caused the problem. However, it would be wise to get off Tazorac and try to kill the candida also, if he is agreeable. Of course, he would have to do his own research and see what feels right for him, which might mean ignoring is derm. Not many are willing to do that.

i've been off the tazorac for about a month and a half now. this issue really has me depressed, as my username implies. i don't know hwo to deal with it. it is too complicated, it seems.

i don't see a derm; my family doctor is reluctant o give me a referral so he writes me prescriptions. he ner mentioned the risk of candida. i'm really scared. sad.gif

that's odd. I would demand a referrel if I were you. If not for the acne, then for the hair thinning. Look up a list of derms that your insurance covers, and choose one that looks more knowledgeable about hair loss. For example, my derm office is also a 'hair transplantation center' (I was able to get an appointment there quicker than the other places I called).

Dpressed; there is no need to be scared. You can always get some Threelac (the best anti-candida probiotic on the market-do a google), and get some oregano oil (you can get that at any healthfood store) and take about 3 drops under the tongue twice a day. For whatever reason, derms are hellbent on destroying people's health by keeping them on antis indefinitely (I was on them for 11 years), and they never tell people the risks, and they seem clueless about candida. You can always treat the candida, and if you've been off Taz for a while, then there is nothing else you can do to treat that end of the hair loss problem (other than get help as Ritzvin said at a hair loss/derm clinic).
