23 male cystic acne since freshman yr. of high school
Ive been a long time reader of these message boards for years actually. Ive been feeling really torn up about my face the last couple of days because I went to the dermatologist and she prescribed me isotretinoin or accutane as it formally was, I was so excited I breathed a sigh of relief and ran down to the lab to get my first blood work done. Went down to the pharmacy and picked up the drug and here it sits right in front of me, 40mg capsules..... However after reading some of the people that posted on the message board about some of the effects that may occur because of it and because of the long term effects. I can't bring myself to put this stuff in my body. I'm so torn....... ive tried everything possible to treat this condition. I juiced organic vegetables and ate nothing else for an entire month... took fish oil and zinc.... antibiotics topicals everything.... im down to the wire... I was a biology major in college, and learned about biochemistry and how delicate and fragile our cells are. Took drugs and society and learned about the wrongs of big pharma and how corrupt our medical system is. I decided to call the derm and ask her about her past experience with the drug. She was nice in the office and said your going to love your skin after this... when I called because I was concerned she seemed annoyed that I was even questioning the drug I could tell by the sound of her voice , she said "well you can find horror stories on the internet about nearly everything" she used car crashes as an example, and I just thought that doesnt relate to any of this.... I cant bring myself to put this chemotherapy drug into my healthy young body. If it did wreak havoc on my body I couldnt bare to live with myself afterwords. I sit here staring at the cure for what bothers me. Or the poison that will leave me crippled. Ive never faced such a difficult decision but id rather not look in the mirror and face the sun. Then have to turn away because the treatment has made me so sensitive to light, or cant get out of bed because it has destroyed my joints 10 yrs down the road.
I would enjoy to hear what you guys and gals say about this, for now ill just get these pills out of sight.

I know exactly where your coming from mate!
I went to the dermatologist about 2 or 3 years ago after trying 3 or 4 antibiotics/topical creams and got prescribed isotretinoin but after reading the information sheet stating the purpose/dose/side effects etc. along with further research, I eventually decided my long term health wasn't worth risking for a short term cosmetic fix, plus I had tried the topical isotretinoin previously which tore my face up badly! The derm (like yours) was very subjective and tried to talk me into it.
Its down to you though at the end of the day, I wasn't really studing science back then and decided against it, now I'm studying science and I'm so glad I made the right decision. My favourite quote is 'Look after your body, it's the only place you'll ever have to live', and to me my liver is much more important than a good appearance.
My advice to you is if you can emotionally cope with acne stay away, but if your emotionally distressed/depressed/angry/frustrated constantly take the drug, those emotions can be just as detrimental to health than medication...

I agree with the person above me, if acne doesn't bother you as much and you can cope with it keep trying until you find what works for you. If you don't think nothing else will help and you're emotionally unstable because of your acne then take the drug. I went through the same stage as you and I decided to take it after trying a lot of products and medications. At that point i wasn't living my life anyway so it didn't matter what kind of side effects I got, at least I'd be feeling something other than depression. But I can tell you that if you're a healthy person accutane it's not going to affect you too much. I've always been healthy so I haven't gotten any bad side effects, apart from the dry lips. My depression has gone away since my skin cleared up as well. And the drug goes out of your system within a month once you stop. If you're not so healthy I wouldn't even think of going on accutane, you never know what it can further damage. With all that said, I wouldn't recommend accutane to someone who is not ready for it. You are going to regret taking it some time during your course, even if your blood work shows up fine and you don't have bad side effect, just thinking about what it potentially can do to you will make you upset!! so exhaust whatever other options you have until you feel ready! Maybe try seeing a naturopathic doctor!
