Oooh, my face... what a lovely sense of humour you have! It's like you are perpetually playing little mind games with me and trying to convince me I'm crazy.Well, I DEFY YOU, MONSTER FACE.

Here's the long and short of my acne history:

I started getting acne, just little guys, when I was 13. It started getting to be a problem at age 15 and I would have between 5 - 8 zits at any given time. And when you already have braces and think two-tone corduroy pants are rad, it's just a bad combo.

I was put on Diane birth control at age 16 but it was WAY too strong for me (I was about 115 lbs, 5'5") and I would seriously only get my period for like 20 hours (which would have been awesome if I didn't spend the rest of the time vomiting into a bowl).
I switched onto Alesse 28 which I never really found helpful but i stayed on it anyway.

Then at 17 went on Retin-a micro topical and apparently became a total idiot because I also went to Mexico for a week.
WELL SEE YOU LATER TOP 3 LAYERS OF SKIN. Yup, I burnt my face so badly that I literally was losing layers of skin that you just aren't supposed to lose. Buuuuut.... my acne was gone...g-g-gone? fo' reals?

Yes, fo' reals.

Now that lasted about 2 years. BEST TWO YEARS EVAH! But then like the total idiot I apparently was, I went off Alesse, thinking that it had contributed nothing, and I suffered a massive breakout. And despite going back on Alesse, I couldn't shake it.
I cut my bangs straight across so no one could see my forehead acne (excellent! Now all I had to do was grow hair everywhere else on my face!) but I had some bad cysts on my chin. It was always the forehead and chin with me. Jerks.
I used topical treatments that worked a little and then stopped, etc., and my skin did get a bit better overtime simply from being on Alesse. Really, my skin wasn't that bad at all. It would never have served as a deterrent for attracting a guy, and if you saw me with makeup, you probably wouldn't really notice unless you were a biotch.

But OH I'M NOT EFFING PERFECT (I must have thought) because I continued testing the waters with a billion products and you know what happened? They friggin ruined my skin. No offense to Dan, but his regimen made me break out not only where I usually do, but also ALL OVER MY CHEEKS. I was horrified. It reminded me of when I woke up from jaw surgery and saw myself in the mirror for the first time and couldn't stop laughing at the overinflated ape-woman looking back at me. This may have been affected by all the morphine I was on, but my point is that I looked so bad that it was almost surreal. And even after going off the regimen my skin wouldn't get better.

And that's what lead me here to Accutane. It had actually been suggested to me by my dermatologist when I was 16 and breaking out, but my overbearing mother (she means well) had bluntly said 'no' due to the potential side-effects. I should probably mention that basically everyone on my mom's side of the family has dealt with severe depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and dressing goth (well, only one went temporarily goth, but it was scary enough to note) so her fears were relatively well-founded. I myself have dealt with anxiety disorders since then, so maybe that was a smart move.

But 65 days ago I went to the walk-in clinic and got my first prescription for Accutane. I found it odd that it was so easy to obtain, maybe it's because I'm Canadian, as everyone talks about how much of a hassle is. I literally rolled off my couch, strolled down the street and told some random doctor I'd never met that I wanted to be on it. He took one look at my face and said, "It's time." What a dillhole.

He only put me on 20mg per day to start which is pretty darn low. But from what I'd read about high doses of Accutane, they weren't fun and could cause things like liver malfunction, Crohn's disease, and leprosy (I made that last one up, but I wouldn't be shocked to see it listed). Well, I broke out like a mofo and everything I had on my face multiplied like those crazy brooms in the beginning of Fantasia. I went from looking basically human (debatable) to looking like the poster-girl for Rejection Hotline.
After 2 months on 20mg I was bumped up to 40mg, by another random doctor I had never met, because clearly the first 2 months had only served as a fun experiment to worsen my situation. The problem seems to be that I can't get in to see a dermatologist until the end of February and I'm not about to just wait that out. I have a life (sort of).

So that's where I am now. I have acne all over my face after 2 months on 20 mg, and 6 days on 40 mg. Hoping for the best, but from what I've seen from other people, their acne sucked before Accutane, they had a little friendly IB near the beginning, and then started clearing up insane amounts. I, however, like to live outside the realm on what is considered 'normal' and just break out consistently until, in the year 2040, I will murder my more beautiful clone and steal her skin. Foolproof! I'll post some pictures when I can, but only if you promise not to weep on my behalf, HMMmmmkay?

haha Seriously, if there was a clone of me, I would kill her and take her skin too. Problem completely solved.

Best of luck :)

Alright! Update time!

SooooOOo0oo I've been on 40mg for about 17 days now and WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE!
My skin is actually clearing up pretty well! Unfortunately, the Accutane made me break out so badly initially that I'm basically almost back at where I was before Accutane... I'm going to ignore that though.
All of the acne I have on my cheeks looked super angry before, and now it's all smoothing out.
I can wear makeup and, yes, you can still see my acne, but it's much less horribly disfiguring and I am now easily identifiable as being of the human variety.
I'm being bumped up to 50mg so I think that will only help speed things along (or serve as my unfortunate demise -- stay tuned)
It's weird, there are just these portions of my face that are so incredibly clear that they don't even look like they belong to me...
Like half my forehead and my chin look like they were photoshopped onto my face because I would never produce skin that nice.
I'm pretty excited by how well everything is going now. I have decided that I won't b*tchslap the dermatologist when I see him.

And Happy Valentines Day to all you disgusting people in love. What the eff is that like? Sounds weird and foreign like poutine or jumping spiders.

ANnnnnddd UNFORTUNATE DEMISE IT IS!

HOLY CRAP my skin looks just GOD AWFUL! I woke up to about 5 more white heads. YES. SO EXCITED. I JUST LOVE ACNE.

No, I do not. But that must be what my genes are thinking constantly. They're all, "YAY! More acne! Let's do it!" Posted Image
And I'm like...."Eff you guys."Posted Image

Also, my skin is just SUPER RED. And kinda hot? Not in the attractive sense of the word; in the literal MY FACE BURNS way.
Seriously, my skin is a banner for Communist China.

My mother could not be more irritating about the whole experience either. I don't live at home, but I'm close with her and we talk all the time. Pretty much every single day she will express how much she hates that I am on accutane at all. She thinks it was created by Satan's minions or something. (At this point, I'm almost inclined to agree).
She's always trying to convince me that my acne is caused by something that accutane can't cure, like a stress disorder, allergies, or an evil spell.
But there is no FREAKIN way I am going off accutane when I am in the middle of my IB. I'd just rather end my life right now.

I get to see the dermatologist in 12 days. I am just CLINGING to that shred of hope that he will look at my face, perform his acne-fighting wizardry and cure me. I haven't seen a derm yet! Which is apparently really weird... I just had random doctors giving me stuff...strange.
Has anyone taken prednisone to help with their IB? MINEISSOBAD. I want to ask about it. My cousin went on prednisone and her skin is F&*$%ing perfect so i really want to be put on it (or steal her skin in the night).

Bleeeeehhhh. Why is acne a thing?? I don't get it. It's like a computer virus... you're just like, WHO CREATED YOU AND WHY!?!?

hey there! hahaha, saw your reply in the other topic.

your posts are hilarious. you sound like an awesome person. i'm sure we'd be friends irl! :D whereabouts in canada you from btw? are you a hockey fan? i'm from boston originally (now in new york city) so i hope we can still be friends LOL...

anyways, i'm on day 7 of 40mgs a day so you sound like you're a bit ahead of me, but glad things are progressing so well for you! :D

i took 5 days of prednisone with my first 5 days of accutane as prescribed by the derm, and honestly, i'm not sure if i really saw any changes due to it LOL... i think it did supress my acne though, since i'm just starting to break out more heavily now in whiteheads. i feel like it's better to be breaking down though (i look FORWARD to the IB!) since i want to get all this gunk out of my skin!!

AHH i really hope we have clear skin by summer!

AND ALSO. my mother is EXACTLY the same way, although she supports me taking accutane since my skin has basically made me anti-social for the last half year and she's scared i'll never find a bf and get married or something. rofl. she think acne is a hormonal / dietary issue, although I NEVER EAT FRIED GREASY TERRIBLE FOODS and generally eat lots of fruits veggies oatmeal etc and my skin has stayed EXACTLY the same -___-"

anyhow my skin is FREAKING OILY THESE DAYS! ughhh not sure why since everyone complains of dryness i WISH I WERE DRY because my makeup keeps sliding off!

KEEP US UPDATED xxx!

Ooooh, You're from Boston!! I'm from Vancouver... Guess that makes us mortal enemies MUAHAHAhhaha so yes, I do watch hockey.
Oh my fricken j-zuz I would kill for clear skin this summer Posted Image that is the DREAM...
I bet you and I would be friends IRLPosted Image
Don't know why, but i felt like that called for a dancing cat.

ALSO, to everyone reading this, I did a fancy-dancy little face mask this evening and let me tell YOU... I liked it very much.
I was reading that ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory, and since my face is a big swollen tomato I thought it might help.
So I mixed a small spoonful of powdered ginger into a paste with a bit of milk (I don't know why I used milk and not water?) and spread it across my cheeks and everywhere I have acne (so... everywhere. yes)
I left it on for about 40 minutes and washed it off very gently with warm water.
IT HELPED SO MUCH Posted Image
By no means did it get rid of any zits entirely, I'm aware that it does not possess magical properties, BUT it did reeeeeally help with the redness and swelling.
My skin also feels smoother and much less dry.
But I'm not recommending you all rush off and start powdering your faces with ginger root like a bunch of psychos.Posted Image I'll keep using it, especially since ginger is supposed to help with scarring because it has antibacterial powers, and I'll report back.
I don't want to cause any chaos ya know? SO EVERYONE JUST KEEP CALM, OKAY!?

*Update*

The ginger masks are awesome! They have really improved my skin's redness and inflammation :)
My skin continues to improve every day (with the exception of a few zits that cropped up do to a little *ahem* alcohol consumption on the weekend....Posted Image
My bad.
I am feeling optimistic! just like this little champ:

Hello lovers,

So i'm almost at three months on Accutane! Woo! Posted Image
My skin has improved dramatically in the last couple weeks! I only have 1-2 actives, and the rest is just red marks. The ginger masks have completely gotten rid of the inflammation after only a few times using it, and i've been using fresh lemon juice as a toner which has helped fade the red marks.
I still have a ton of red marks, but they are fading so it's not a big deal. No cysts at all! Posted Image
Can't wait to have clear skin for summer/life!
How's everyone else doing?
