Hi everyone, I apologize in advance if this question shouldn't be in this thread. I'm new here and am kind of desperate for an answer.

I'm only on Day 11 of my 6 month accutane treatment but my eyes have been crazy dry and irritated. It's been really bothersome. I was prescribed the 40mg x2 a day and I think that might be a bit too high for a 115 lbs girl. I literally only just realized how high of a dosage I was put on and am now kind of mad with my doctor but I'm going to try to go in tomorrow to speak to him.

In the meantime, do you think cutting down to 40mg a day would be a good idea?

I think that's too high, I thought it was around your weight. If you're going to talk to him tommorrow, if I were you, I keep taking 40mg x2 a day but that's only if I was certain that I'm meeting my doctor tommorrow.

I go to my school's clinic so it's kind of hit or miss whether I'll get to speak to him or not.

I think I'm going to skip tonight's pill and only take one tomorrow with a big deal and hope I get an opportunity to speak to my doctor.

Thanks!

The typical dose is 120mg per KG of body weight. This depends on the severity of your acne though.

Weight 52kg
Cumulative dose of 120mg per KG of body weight = 6240mg total

Your on 80mg a day for 6 months.

80mg x 28 days = 2240mg per month
2240mg x 6 = 13440mg Total dose

13440mg / 52kg = 258mg per KG of body weight.

Unless I have my calculations wrong, you are on over double the typical dose for sombody of your weight.

In the first month, most people are put on 20mg to see how their body reacts to the drug.

I posted the same question yesterday for my 16yr old son. He is also 115lbs. They started him in 40mg/day the first month with good results and bumped him up to 80/day for this month. He took that dosage for two weeks and had much worse joint pain, eyes looked red to me a lot and headaches. Checking online the FDA states the recommended dosage is 1 mg/kilogram of body weight divided into two doses per day. With food. So your max should be 50 mg per day if you are 115lbs based on that. I dropped my son back to 40 and two days later he's already feeling better. I'm still waiting for the derm to call me back and explain the high dosage. I'm not letting him get put on that much again.

Your derm's response would probably be "Oh. Increasing the dosage would decrease the time that he needed to take it for. And I see how much he hates his acne so I increased it." or something like that.
