So I am about to go on a third round of accutane in a few weeks. Im 33 had acne since I was 13 and been on every medication and accutane is the only thing that has worked. i have severely oily skin. My skin is very oily after an hour of washing it. I have very moderate acne very congested skin I would say tons of black heads and white heads. I went on accutane for the first time about 4 years ago. It worked great, but didn't last long within a year the oil was back to just as oily as it was before as well as all the congestion skin. I tried going back on other meeds such as retina with no success. I went on accutane again last January for 6 months and I have to say the second time it worked so fast within weeks I was super clear with no initial break out. However, a few months after stopping my dose it all came back again. Its weird this time my lips still are dry nothing how they are on tane but mildly always dry and my hands get dry. I just wish that was the problem with my face, I am still super oily. My derm told me that my kind of acne as in moderate acne is actually the most difficult to get rid of all acne. She said in her experience those with acne like mine have to go on accutane several times before they see lasting results and even she herself has gone on accutane 4 times. Has anyone on here gone on three courses and have advice? Im so tired of being a grown up with acne :( I feel like its the last thing I should be dealing with at my age. And its such a tease when Im on tan because my skin is super clear and even get asked on what I use for my skin because its so clear. I am going on a 3rd time but after this I think if it comes back I some how need to accept that I am going have acne forever ugh!

Well really I think you only have a couple of options, go on it again for 6 months and then from there on try and control it with topicals. Very soon after finishing the 6 months I would look to get on topicals even if you have no acne. The other option could be to do low dose long term, Ive read of a quite a few people doing long term low dose to get there skin clear. Brings a lot of side effects to the fore though.

Hello, i have done 3 courses of accutane and well...i still have acne :-(. I think for some of us, if accutane doesn't work after mltiply times, it means it doesn't work for us. I now have health issue which i partiall attribute to accutane (namely my glucose issues). If you are going to do a third course, i recommend as did the previous poster, to get on a topical ASAP AFTER your treatment ends. I did that after my 3rd treatment (not sure if the topical prescribed for me is right for me though but i digress). I am 28 so i know how as an adult, having acne and oily skin sucks, especially if you're in a career where you're around other people (um.....isn't that most careers....lol). Anyway, do what is best for you and use this time as an opportunity to clean up your diet, digestion whatever may be happening inside that could be contributing to your acne.

Good Luck!

Forget Accutane.
There is so much more poor side effects caused by Accutane that is not enough to justify clearing acne.

My acne has stopped popping out without any oral medication.
I am strongly against taking oral medication to help with acne.

THank you all for replying and your concerns. I actually was put on retina and then taz after accutane and for some reason it does nothing for me other than make my skin dry and irritated which is weird because I do not have sensitive skin at all. I eat pretty darn healthy and workout 4-5 days a week and two of those days I am training kickboxing and mma so its a very intense training so I consider myself a pretty healthy individual. So I feel for me its just genetics :( Definitely and aware of all the health issues accutane has caused so many people. Thanks again for the replys!

I have not. She is actually out of town. It takes a month to get back into the ipledge system so I take my blood test in February and will meet with her then to discuss dosage. I will see what she says but knowing she has gone on accutane herself several times I would think if she was pro long term low dose accutane she would have suggested it, but will definitely ask.
