I'm aware that skin is skin and that if you clear your facial acne it will likely clear your body acne, but I haven't found that to be the case.

That's probably because it isn't true. If you've ever taken a human biology class, your teacher SHOULD have taught you that your skin varies widely from body part to body part. Presumably, your facial skin has sebaceous glands that are easier to corrupt.

My back is oily AND flaky.

It might be harder to shift on your back because it is both oily and flaky. I get acne on my back and shoulders as well as my face, although I don't tend to note it in my log because it is the face that is the worst. My shoulders and back are pretty easy to clear using topicals. However any area that is both oily and flaky was always worse. As I have gotten older I haven't been prone to the flakiness so much.

I cleared myself through diet once when I was a teenager so now I am trying to do the same again - all areas cleared up for me.

The only other thing I can offer is that exfolation helps with my back and shoulders - but I think this probably depends on how severe or inflamed the acne is - if too inflamed it could irritate too much.

Hey,

have you seen a Dr about the blotchiness/dryness? It could be a different problem - maybe seborrhoeic dermatitis? There are different topicals for seb derm. Also the dryness may mean there is something you need to add into your diet rather than take out. Maybe oils/fat?

Or maybe it is just dry skin and needs moisurised - but just that part

Have you tried switching shampoos re the scalp acne?

Also,

I forgot to mention, my friend had acne years ago when he was working night shifts - when he stopped the night shifts it all went away. No problems since - and he didn't even change his diet. So, it might be something else you need to look at, not just food.

You are creating too much DHT, and thus getting way too much oil on the body, thus causing skins normal shedding process to become large dead flaky skin. You need to figure out what you are doing that produces DHT, stop/control it, and see the results.

I used to have acne on my chest and back. My back was pretty bad, but my chest was okay. Now my chest is entirely clear, and my back is also clear, with a few spots drying up here and there.

With a holistic approach, you're treating your entire body, so I can't see how it wouldn't affect acne all around your body. It certainly did for me.

Well I never used body washes on my chest or back. Just never found them useful.

What finally totally cleared them was removing foods I was intolerant to, and eating healthy mostly.

At the risk of this being a possibly silly question, how much sun do you get ... in general, and on your back?

I've noticed that the absolute *best* thing I ever did for body acne was let it enjoy the sunshine. My skin is always the clearest when I've had some rays. I remember a friend in college noting similar effects.

-shrug- Just a thought?
I used to use topicals on my back as well, but they usually more irritated me than anything. ;/

I'm assuming the sun + the water= good skin.

to take my shirt off at the beach, I'd have to get a little clearer than I am now. That's why it's such a bummer, because it would help. Maybe the key is to just not give a shit what people would think.

That is the key! I would specify the salt water, not pool water, though.

Sunshine is a cure for body acne. I struggled with body acne all through high school, whenever summer came and I was out with my shirt off, it would be gone in a week. Now I live in AZ and its sunny year around, I play a lot of sports outside and never have troubles anymore. But yeah i suggest being in the sun with your shirt off for at least 15 minutes every sunny day you get.

Well, if you think the sun is beneficial to you, perhaps invest in a quality vitamin D supplement -- I'd suggest fermented cod liver oil for that, but any D supplement will work.

That could help, if you can't get the actual sunshine. <3

Are you showering in really hot water and/or using harsh cleansers? Are you sure it's acne?

Masturbation/sex/orgasm/ejaculation is not the only thing that ramps up DHT production. High fatty diets, high insulin, dairy/milk, processed/refined foods, and others also create pathways to higher DHT production, and does so in a different fashion in each individual. This is why some can ejaculate once a day and never have and adverse affects, while someone could do it once a week and it would be enough DHT production to cause acne, same thing works with other food/diet routines. For me ejaculation raises my DHT production 10x, however I never have any issues with food, as in, food never makes me breakout.

There are ways to help combat DHT production, and I would recommend these to all acne patients.
