So, something I've been considering lately; Since I can remember I've been in the habit of washing off my concealer/foundation during the day if I know I'll be home and away from people for a period of time. Is it bad to do this when I know I'll be reapplying it and washing it off again later in the day after I go out again? I figure I want my skin to breathe as much as possible, but I know over-washing can be damaging as well. (I'd say I wash my face three times a day if I do this). Does anyone else do this?

Does your skin react or dry out when you wash your makeup off? If it works and you see no ill effects from washing I would say okay....but even then that's a lot of washing. Not to mention a lot of time/work wasted on makeup removal! Over washing can cause problems too.
Maybe you need to search out for a new concealer/foundation that is more breathable/comfortable for your skin. My skin would dry to bits if I removed and washed that many times. It would also drive me bonkers. When I do use makeup I usually have it on 14-16 hrs. That is the time line of my work and after hours activities with makeup. I come home and wash it off. I very rarely wash my face in the am-a splash of water and swipe of toner. That's it!
Mineral makeup for myself has been the way to go for breathable coverage. It's very quick to apply with coverage that you can control.

I think applying and washing it off two times a day could be quite irritating to your skin.. Personally I don't think make up is bad for you (unless it has ingredients that really break you out) and skin doesn't "breathe". Also, as said above, it would drive me bonkers :P

I use everyday minerals, which seems to be ok, but I'm breaking out in cysts so bad that I'm terrified something I can't pinpoint (like even make-up) is causing it. I just hate wearing the stuff to begin with but I really have to in order to look half decent :(

I use Everyday Minerals too and at first I thought it was great, but lately I haven't been impressed. I've seen a lot of people mention Hello Minerals and am wondering if anyone has tried both EM and HM? Would you prefer Hello Minerals? What's better about them? I'm STILL on the search for my favorite mineral foundation.

I'm using Meow cosmetics which has the same ingredients EM used to have when many people on this site loved it (about two years ago and prior to that). I'm not sure if they're in the same proportion but I'm in love with the stuff. They also have a better selection of colors and the colors are organized far better.

Anyway, to the OP, if your skin feels dry when you wash it, maybe you can try removing the makeup with some kind of oil. I use extra virgin olive oil followed by a cleanser. But I think if you use EVOO the first time and don't rinse it off (meaning just gently wipe it off with a soft cloth) until you re-apply the makeup it would help. The oil would have time to absorb and moisturize your skin before washing it completely off before you re-apply makeup. Just an idea. However, it is ideal to not wash your face too often - hope you find something that works!

I've tried my share of makeup. Whether it be mineral, liquid, cream-to-powder, mousse, etc...I have given each one a chance and opportunity to perform their great marketing claim. When I was younger and had no concern about acne reactions or chemicals my biggest dilemma was finding a shade that worked for my skin. Which is amusing to me now...I didn't even need makeup then. Now that I've gotten older and my skin changed when I hit 25 my concerns changed and multiplied. I look for makeup that won't cause any reactions. (pimples, redness, rash, and yada-yada) I also need coverage to cover past spots and sun spots. Gasp! Also, the smallest of lines don't need to be magnified. I want the fresh, natural, face that I was trying to cover with makeup as a teen. The irony. Haha. My point, what works for some may not work for all. But if I can keep the ingredient list to a minimum I can feel pretty good about that. At the very least I can spot out which ingredient may or may not be causing my face grief. Hello Minerals works great for me and has for quite a while. I still get the occasional massive pimple which is no fun. However, I've never put those pimples in the category of cosmetic acne. I've had cosmetic acne and massive pimples is not what I got in return. It presented itself more like an abundance of of pin size pimples dancing all over my face. Within a day or two of no makeup they were pretty much gone. My biggest offender was Bare Minerals. Caused the worst type of cosmetic acne I had ever experienced dealing with a cosmetic. So, even with mineral makeup they are created differently. The good news with so few ingredients I was able to pin point that Bismuth Oxychloride was the offender. Trial and error. Here are the list of ingredients for Hello Minerals Foundation/ Ingredients: mica, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, iron oxides. I also use there bronzers, concealers, and finishing powders. Just a heads up- brushes can cause problems as well. Not washing your brushes frequently and animal hair brushes can cause skin reactions too. I switched to synthetic brushes when I switched to Hello Minerals.

Maybe I'll try Hello Minerals soon or Meow Minerals... I was so satisfied with Everyday Minerals but it COULD be part of my problem. I just feel like all the alternative mineral brands are so similar, and I'm not sure what to look for in the ingredients that would break me out.

I may try using oil to just remove my foundation, maybe jojoba oil. It just freaks me out to put oil on my face I guess.

Try to look for mineral makeup brands that are just minerals. Hello Minerals Makeup ingredients are just minerals. I try to stay away from added plant oils, fillers, preservatives, dyes, etc. Those do not need to be in a mineral makeup to make it a better mineral makeup. Actually if those are in your mineral makeup you might as well go for a liquid foundation. That's just my opinion. Mineral makeup in the purest sense for the most part will not cause reactions in skin. It's the additions added where mineral makeup get lost in translation. That and not washing brushes or dipping your brush into your makeup. Bacteria is the culprit when brushes are the main source of application.
Have you ever tried CeraVe as face wash? That stuff is brilliant for the price!

Thanks so much for that information! I guess it was silly of me to assume just because it doesn't have bismuth that it means it's good mineral makeup. I will definitely compare and check out Hello minerals. I hope they have shades for extra pale gals like me! :)

I've never seen CeraVe is that sold in drugstores? I'm pretty cool with Cetaphil.

Thanks! Awesome info. I thought Everyday Minerals' ingredients were just about the same as Hello Minerals! But I could be wrong (I'm too lazy to look it up right now :P) So my next makeup purchase will be Hello Minerals. With what I've got right now my face always looks so DIRTY and is never flawless :( I used to do a pretty good job with makeup too! I could be using the wrong shade...I also think it'd be helpful to purchase concealers along with the mineral formula I use. But I'm a cheap-o. I make sure to wash my brushes about once a week too.

There was a thread here, it was probably well over a year ago, about an added ingredient in Everyday Minerals that wasn't placed on their label. It might be there now but I stopped using their foundations a while ago so I don't know. I tried finding that thread but had no luck. All I remember is that the unlisted ingredient was some derivative of coconut oil... maybe. I could be wrong on that. While most people had no issues with this change, it could be (and was) an issue for some people with acne prone skin.

Gemmy, I know you're a big fan of Hello Minerals as I've seen you recommend several times. I just want to say to others who are still looking for their perfect mineral makeup that there are probably several small companies now that offer practically the same products (given that their claims and posted ingredients are truthful).

For instance, I've been using Meow Cosmetics since last summer. The last time I ordered from them was probably in the beginning of the year and I'm still using the same two jars - depending on my color. I'm only half way through one of them and have barely made a "dent" in the other and I wear makeup on a regular basis. Anyway, to my point... I've looked at both Hello and Meow and this is what I noticed:
  • Both use the same ingredients
  • Hello: $15 for 9 grams
  • Meow: $24 for 22-30 grams
  • Hello has 14 colors available
  • Meow has 85 colors available
I've heard people call Meow expensive but I think people forget about the jar sizes. I'm sure both products are great, given that they're probably very similar. Differences arise in selection and price - something to keep in mind!

I've had only good experience with Meow products but I do use liquid foundation, too, which obviously affects the look and wear.

For those in the UK (maybe they ship elsewhere, not sure), I've heard good things about Lily Lolo, too. Again, same ingredients.

True! True! Personal preference and price. If it works..it works. Just like your personal preference and mention regarding Meow. It's great when find what works for you and you can share your personal experience with others still searching. Just passing it on...Posted Image

i think washing your face 3 times a day is much better than clogging your pores with make up for a whole day

Assuming that makeup does clog your pores. If it's worn responsibly, and if your skin has no adverse reaction to that specific makeup, it won't cause acne.

Not to mention over-washing can lead to dryness and dryness can lead to your skin producing more oil to compensate for moisture loss. Experimenting, as frustrating as it can be, is key.

I ordered the sample kit back in 2010 I think or last year can't remember but it broke me out a bit :S my skin is pretty intolerant so I guess something that it had just irritated my skin and have me more acne. Maybe the bismuth something they say that triggers acne for some .

I do what you do. I put on makeup in the morning before I go to class (but less makeup than usual since I know I'll be washing it off anyway) then when I get back to my dorm from class, I wash it off and relax in my room for a few hours. Then before I go to socialize with friends and such I reapply it and keep it on for the rest of the night.

My skin hasn't been irritated from this, and is actually quite clear right now. I figure it's best to let skin "breathe" when you know you're not going to be seeing anyone. Why wear makeup when you're by yourself for a few hours? plus, it's really relaxing for me to not wear makeup for a bit during the day. And if I'm taking a nap etc. I definitely don't want to sleep with makeup on.

So basically, I don't think that's bad at all. Like I said, best to let your skin breathe for a bit.
