People have been wondering what the cost of taking Accutane is - it varies depending on the country you live in and if have private insurance etc.

I live in Canada and I have private insurance (Drugs are covered up to 80%) and I have broken down the costs of the drug for a five month stint of the drug.

The Cost of Accutane in Canada with Private Health Insurance

Doctors Visits

I go to a doctor who specialises in Acne therefore I have to pay an additional fee of $30 per visit.

June 17th: Pre Accutane Visit
  • Determine that I need the drug and lab work
  • $30 fee - $12 covered by private insurance = $18
June 28th: Accutane Start Day
  • Prescription for the medication
  • Extractions Kenalog Injections
  • $30 fee - $12 covered by private insurance = $18
July 7th: Two Week Checkup
  • Extractions Kenalog Injections
  • $30 fee - $12 covered by private insurance = $18
July 21st: Two Week Checkup
  • Extractions Kenalog Injections
  • $30 fee - $12 covered by private insurance = $18
August 3rd: Two Week Checkup
  • Extractions Kenalog Injections
  • $30 fee - $24 covered by private insurance = $6 (new insurance plan)
August 16th: Two Week Checkup
  • No extractions needed
  • $30 fee - $24 covered by private insurance = $6
October 12th: Checkup
  • $30 fee - $24 covered by private insurance = $6
November 23rd: Final Checkup (Estimated)
  • $30 fee - $24 covered by private insurance = $6
It is important to note that my Doctor was on vacation this summer and I had to visit an alternate doctor to have my initial breakout taken care of. Below are the additional costs:

July 13th: Additional Doctor Visit
  • Extractions Kenalog Injections
  • $30 fee - $12 covered by private insurance = $18
Total Doctors Visits: $270 (without insurance) $114 (with insurance)

Drug Costs

Diane 35 - $40 monthly x 5 months = $200 (without insurance) $40 (with insurance)

Fucidin for the lining of one's nose $23.05 (without insurance) $4.70 (with insurance)

Accutane a full course $625.30 (without insurance) $125.06 (with insurance)

Vitamin A Cream 0.05% - $24.84 (without insurance) $4.96 (with insurance)

Vitamin A Cream 0.025% - $24.84 (without insurance) $4.96 (with insurance)

In Canada a box of 30 - 40mg Accutane pills is $69.17 + Dispensing Fee $11.99 = $81.16

For months Four and Five I was given a prescription of 60 - 40mg Accutane pills $138.34 + Dispensing Fee $11.99 = $150.33 (you save on phamacy fees)

Total Drug Cost: $898.03 (without insurance) $179.61 (with insurance)

Blood Tests are free in Canada

Incidental Costs

When you go on Accutane you more than likely need to change up your products. I had to go out and buy new hair and face products to deal with the effects of the drug.

Hair conditioner: Morrocan Oil: $40

La Roche Possay Cream Hydreane Riche: $25 (a good non-irritating moisturizer but not strong enough if you are on Tane)

La Roche Possay Effaclar H: $20 (a must if you are on Tane during the Fall and Winter)

La Roche Possay Cleanser Tolerane: $25 (not my favourite but it is okay during treatment, Effaclar H also makes a cleanser which is probably better)

La Roche Possay Ceralip Treatment: $15 (its okay but your lips can still feel dry, great if you are off Tane)

Aquaphor: $10 (worth every cent)

Cetaphil Lotion: $15 (it is good non-irritating lotion)

Bio Oil: $12 (hardly used it)

Total Incidental Cost: $162

Total Course of Treatment Without Insurance: $1320.03

Total Course of Treatment With Insurance: $455.61

No kidding - I just wanted to record the costs so people who want to try Accutane get an idea of time and cost involved. But its my third round of Tane in 14 years and once again I am as clear as can be. I hope I wont be dealing with Acne when I am 40!

Sans insurance in Ohio is ~$390/month for 40mg Amnesteem. This includes scrip, monthly visit, and bloodwork.

So basically $2400 for a 6 month course.

That number is hard to look at. However, money comes and goes, and I would much rather be happy and confident with my appearance
