I'm really worried about pcos.. it just sounds horrifying :(
i want to get tested, im a few months to 20 years old. if i get tested now for it and just say it comes back negative, will that mean i'll never have/get it?
i read somewhere that if you have pcos you essentially have it at birth but it shows itself later in life so if i got tested unaware if i have it or not would that be a good thing to do to rule it in or out?

I think the general advice is to do a test every couple of years or so. My last one turned up negative, but I can't help but feel like I may have just gotten "lucky" the day of my test so I'm going to get another one done sometime next year - I have a lot of the symptoms, especially now that I have acne, so I think it will probably be a good idea. Definitely talk to your GP about this though!

By "test" you mean ultrasound, right?
Are you worried because you have symptoms? If not, you might as well worry about testicular cancer while you're at it. ;)
The breakdown: pcos is treated by birth control which is and isn't a "cure"...for instance, you take the bc to make your symptoms go away and you stop to try to get pregnant or whatever other reason you'd have, the syndrome can come back. Doesn't have to but can. Now, if you have pco, that can require some more invasive action.
You can have pcos without having pco, so even if your ultrasound is clear, make sure your doc is aware of the symptoms you have.

FSAS, what are your symptoms? Usually symptoms of PCOS can be seen very clearly. PCOS is just a condition where a woman produces too much testosterone, it usually shows its symptoms during puberty. I am not sure, however, if the symptoms go away during menopause, if they don't, then yes PCOS will be forever. For many women it's not bad to live with, birth control will get rid of a lot of your symptoms, just make sure to watch your blood pressure or you will not be able to continue with birth control and your symptoms will come back.

While acne can be a symptom of PCOS it is not the only physical symptom. Just get tested, the worst that will happen is the test is positive, but then your doctor can just put you on birth control and you will be fine.

im currently already on birth control to help acne, im on diane, but its really only half working because i still break out like crazy 2 weeks before my period and ever since stopping spiro the pimples are a lot more stubborn all month round.
im not really overweight or anything, stayed the same for a long while and actually kinda maybe boredline normal weight to underweight for my height. i have moderate oily skin and sometimes dandruff, i have the acne mostly around my mouth and jaw and forehead, i dont have excessive hair but i do have blonde hair so its very fine and there's maybe a few decent longer hairs on my face and sometimes i just prefer to even shave any facial hair off, i have low blood pressure .. not really sure what that means, could that be from bcp...god i hope not :/

i suppose im just curious that however it if if you get tested...will they know if you're bound to get it or will get it?
even if i do have pcos which maybe i dont, but if birth control atm isnt helping keep me clear does that mean nothing could help me ? :/

You would have gotten PCOS during puberty because that's when hormones start to secrete in your body. To me it doesn't sound like you have it, but I am not a doctor so I can't just tell you to rule it out. However, PCOS is generally characterized by excessive hair growth on the face and body. Women with pcos often have a male build so they generally look more stocky and can be quite heavy than most women when it comes to their body shape. I would recommend that you stop shaving off your facial hair, though. Shaving it makes it grow faster and will make it look like you have more facial hair than you actually do. Every women gets at least one hair on their face, it's not uncommon, just take a pair of tweezers and pluck them.

Don't rule out everything just because birth control isn't working for you, you could always switch to a different pill, I hear good things about Ortho Tri Cyclen. Have you talked to your doctor about accutane? If your acne is not severe enough for accutane you may want to see a dermatologist and try some topical treatments just to see if they could help your acne.

There's some inaccuracies in you post.

Not all women who have PCOS are overweight, though a lot are.

PCOS doesn't mean you'll have a ton of hair on your face. I only have 2 short black hairs and I have PCOS. Some people with it don't have excess hai. It depends on your tolerance for androgens.

It presents differently for some people. Some people have no acne, no excess hair, but have weight gain and POs and irregular periods, as an example. Most don't have all the symptoms listed but 3 or so.

You don't need POs to have PCOS.

Since it's a syndrome there's no cure. You only have symptoms. There's no disease. It's difficult to diagnose and you need someone very informed about it to get an accurate diagnosis, because many mds think it's just cysts on the ovaries when it's not. Like I said, you can have PCOS w/o cysts on the ovaries.

It's highly underdiagnosed. And it's not a death sentence or anything. At least it's treatable.

Shaving doesn't make the hair grow in darker etc. That's a myth. Plucking can cause scarring by ruining the pore. I pluck my two hairs, but they're on my jawline, so it wouldn't be obvious if I did scar and it takes longer for a plucked hair to grow back, because you get the root. Shaving is fine, but you may need to do it more often.

PS -- I don't have elevated androgens either. What I do have: Acne, PO's, and a few hairs on my face and hair (a lot) on my arms. My periods are 28 days like clockwork too. I'm skinny. You only need 3 symptoms for a diagnosis. It can be any three. (I'm pretty sure it's three, but it could be four. You can google it.)

I think more women have it now because of all the xenoestrogens and pollutants which are impossible to avoid, but diagnosis has been better quantified too. My theory is the estrogens and pollutants do something to the hormones, since they aren't natural estrogens (made by your body) and it throws something out of whack, which causes a rise in adrogens or skews other hormone ratios. You can eat all the organic you want, but you can't change the environment.

thanks for your response i really appreciate it, so is pcos something we can create or induce? you mentioned xenoestrogens and polluntants. you mentioned because those estrogens arent natural..but either are those in the pill...does that mean by taking the pill we're creating pcos in ourselves? I want to get tested but isnt the treatment just more synthetic hormones ? :/ are treatments strong enough to rid of all obvious symptoms such as weight gain and acne ? if you have pcos and used birth control to help wouldnt that mean youd have to be on birth control for your whole life? :S which really is impossible but ..this all doesnt make too much sense -_-

Well, it could be from xenoestrogens. I read a really great article that said that BCP could kind of cause it once someone went off. I have no idea if I can find it again. I'll look. It's a syndrome, so it's all symptoms. Major disruptions in hormones can cause it. My endo thinks "something" happened (we don't know what) and that's why I have my symptoms, even though my hormone levels are within range now.

I know of people who lost a lot of weight and took spiro or flutamide and then were able to stop the drugs and remain symptom free. It seems the overweight PCOS'ers have the best chance of going into a remission. I think they're IR and also the extra fat creates hormones in addition to the ovaries, so a lot of weight loss dramatically reduces symptoms. They usually lose the weight by low carbing and exercise. Thin PCOS'ers can't do this or they'll whittle away to nothing and it won't help anyway -- I've been super thin and I still had symptoms.

Just to be clear, there are 2 kinds of PCOS, Type 1 and Type 2, that's according to the article. I'll see if I can find it. The type 1's were IR.

I found the article. I wasn't sure if I bookmarked it on my old PC which got a virus or not.
