ok so i was down at my GP today and got a prescription for lymecycine (408mg) capsules but i have also been taking acidophilus capsules for about 2 weeks now
what would happen taking these two together? and should i make sure there is a sufficient time between taking them?
when i asked my GP he was sort of vague and said it wouldn't be dangerous...

ok antiboitics kill both the good and bad bacteria ... probiotics are used to replenish the good bacteria. I dunno follow what ur GP said... or call him and ask. My suggstion is if u take the antibiotics once a day ... I'd take the pro biotic 12 hours after.

yeah i said that and asked if it would work out as a net gain in good bacteria as that would still be getting topped up and he just sort of said maybe and that it certainly wont be dangerous in any way :S

You should take them separately and wait a few hours in between...however, it doesn't matter too much. Antibacterial things often give people upset stomachs and diarrhea because it kills the good bacteria in your gut (this isn't pseudoscience, its forealz). Like butterfly said, probiotics help replenish the good bacteria (it won't affect the bad bacteria at all). You don't have to wait 12 hours, but I would wait a few hours just to let the medications do their thing alone.

some (good) doctors actually recommend taking probiotics when you are on an antibiotic. An antibiotic removes ALL bacteria including good stuff you need to digest food and keep infections away. a probiotic puts the good stuff back. the only reason you should not take them together is that probiotics are typically derived from yogurt and milk products can not be taken with antibiotics AT THE SAME TIME. so just take it a few hours after but def keep taking the probiotics:)
