I have been on minocycline with pretty good success for almost a year now, but the past month or 2 I have been getting some flare ups. My acne is only on my chin and is mainly cystic The breakouts I've been getting have been drastically less severe than they were before the antibiotic, but they are gradually getting worse so I am considering switching to Bactrim because I fear I am becoming immune to Mino.
My question is am I in for another waiting period if I switch? Basically, will my acne get worse (or not improve) for months before it gets better like when starting an antibiotic or will the bactrim pick up right where the minocycline left off? My skin is manageable right now so I don't want it to get worse, but I figure why not give a stronger antibiotic a try to achieve better results like I did right when I began minocycline. I really don't seem to get side effects either so that is not an issue, and I am not allergic to sulfa drugs.
Any input is appreciated!
Thanks

I'm wondering that same thing. Stopped taking Solodyn which worked WONDERS for me. My stupid finacea and Tretinoin suck and have never helped me, even a little bit. I've been on Finacea since February '11, Tretinoin since April. If this stuff was supposed to work at all, it should have by now. it was only when I started taking Solodyn in July that my skin cleared up (in a week!) and was beautiful. I had nice skin for ~ 3 months. Now I don't have health insurance and can't afford 900 dollars for a 30 day prescription. My skin is awful. It's so depressing. So I'm also wondering if I'll have to go through that embarassing transition and get worse before it gets better.

I thought that the initial breakout was caused by the infection that's already in your skin coming to the surface? If you're already on an antibiotic that's helped with the infection, switching shouldn't cause the same reaction... but I am no expert obviously! I switched from Minocycline to Erythromycin and not only did my skin not get worse, but it got a lot better, and almost immediately... it was amazing, I hope you have luck like that too!

Thanks so much. I think I'm going to switch when I go home for break in a few weeks. I will switch sooner if I see my condition continues to deteriorate. I just don't want to switch and realize the Mino was actually doing a pretty good job.

I'm late to this post, but -- if Mino was previously working well for you and now you're getting flare-ups, and it's been over a year that you've been taking it, it's likely that you're starting to become immune. I generally became immune to those drugs after a year and a few months. The great thing about Bactrim is that it works FAST -- or at least it did for me. I remember going to the dermatologist completely deflated and upset at the state of my broken out skin, being prescribed Bactrim, taking one pill, and waking up the next day to find that two big red spots that were forming on my face had overnight turned into tiny whiteheads.
If you are taking Bactrim, just be safe, make sure you get the blood tests you're supposed to get. Good luck.
