Hi All,

I have been using liquid foundation, but it seems to be breaking me out. I have acne prone, sensitive, and oily skin. I wish I didn't have to wear foundation, but I do have acne scars that I would like to cover up. I use a concealer first to cover spots up, but would like a bit more coverage. I have been searching for mineral makeup. Does anyone know of mineral makeup that does not contain bismuth oxychloride, dimethicone, mica, rice powder, and talc? It seems like most mineral makeup have one or the other (Rejuva, Everyday Minerals, Faerie, Meow).

Thanks!

I have been using Hello Minerals Foundation, concealer, bronzer, and their finishing minerals for a couple years with wonderful results. Great coverage and no cosmetic reactions. They give useful info on their site and are helpful with anything-questions you may have regarding makeup. http://hellominerals.com/
Ingredients for foundation: mica, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, iron oxides.
The mica has never posed a problem for me. I have extremely sensitive skin that reacts to everything. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I might try them out. They sell sample stacks, so that I could try it first. I just wish they sold the samples individually and that I could pick the colors, but the sample stacks will work.

I'd talked to customer service online. They have a live chat like this set up. I needed a color change in foundation for fall(super pale skin) and they sent me extra samples. For free. I told them my shade and they walked me through it. I use their Fair/Cool and Fair to Light/Warm. It's a perfect shade for me. I have cool skin with some warm. But their Light/Neutral shade was a just a tad to dark...off by shade. So that is was they suggested as my own foundation. Worked.

I think you just need to try certain kinds to see what fits for you. I just recently tried rejuva minerals, which I really love how light it is and matches my skin tone almost perfetly, but nearly the next day I had little tiny bumps in areas that I don't breakout....and I thought it was a new moisturizer (which it still may be). I'm gonna lay off makeup in general for a while and see if it helps!

You need to be concerned, you may be allergic to bismuth oxychloridein. I was told to switch to mineral makeup by a dermatologist, and my face is the worse it's every been. I would put a little bit of foundation on my forehead and by the end of the day I would have so many breakouts that I just wanted to cry. At first, I thought it was stress but it really is the mineral makeup because I went back to a foundation makeup (Clinique) for a day and I didn't break out at all. Just a warning. :)

I would check into Bare Essentuals online. I have similar skin and it's worked great. Very different from any kind of liquid foundation, which usually has tons of crappy stuff in it. You can find a lot of their products at Sephora.com. I think that many of their products do contain the compounds like bismuth and mica however, I know that they don't contain talc and rice powder, and I am willing to bet that they have some good products that might work for you. I've used bare minerals with great success in terms of covering redness, etc. I think that the company is pretty good in the customer service dept, too, so it would be worth it to check in with them and see if some of their products seem right for you.

You may want to look at Lauress (The Minimalist line) and Alima. Both companies produce a mineral foundation that is comprised of titanium dioxide, mica, zinc oxides, and iron oxides. I have tried both formulas and really loved the finish, but unfortunately I just can't do "buffing." Too irritating.

I second the bismuth oxychloride! I tried Bare Minerals and it made me break out so badly. I was so disappointed because I thought that since it was mineral it would be better for my skin. Before I found out that bismuth oxychloride can cause acne, though, I started on Pur Minerals and I LOVE the line. I love the mess-free compressed powder (which is really nice if you need to reapply during the day--it has a lot of staying power, but I'm no stranger to 12- and 15-hour days) and the coverage is amazing. Unfortunately they did just repackage everything and I believe they may have changed the formula but I'm not entirely positive, I'll have to look into it. I haven't tried any of their repackaged products yet because I'm skeptical about the possibly new formula. Pur Minerals is only sold at Ulta stores and online, though, so depending on where you live it can be kind of difficult to get.

I do want to try Everyday Minerals though... has anyone had any good experiences with it?

Rejuva minerals doesn't have bismuth oxybutin in it. It's actually just rice powder and some kind of clay powder. I'm wondering if those ingredients were making my skin itch. I've used bare minerals in the past, which I believe contributed to my cystic acne, but then I didn't know how harmful it could be.

I wore everyday minerals last year for about 3 months. My sister switched to it from using Mac, and that is how I started using it. My sister told me all the bad stuff in bare minerals, so I thought I could try everyday minerals. Mind you my skin was not bad at all. I liked that it is fairly cheap and last a very long time (about 6-8 months) and actually covers very well. But then, when I started using it, over a period of time my skin just began to get worse and worse and worse (I recognize there were other contributing factors like not being on the right birthcontrol, using proactiv gentle formula, bad hair products, 'bad' diet, etc). I stopped using everyday minerals about in January, when I started using the regimen. I switched to jane iredale makeup, which was MUCH MUCH better.

Basically, I do not recommend everyday minerals. I'm actually not wearing makeup anymore, as my skin looks more glowy and better without it overall- despite a few redmarks. I look at pics from when I used it, and just think it looked so gross how much I wore... I dont know that I would put that stuff on my skin again!

Most MMU seems to have mica....but if you don't have a mica sensitivity (most people don't), then it should be okay.
I actually like Bare Minerals Matte - no bismuth oxychloride.
But my new favorite is Lumiere Cosmetics in Flawless Finish.
Everyday Minerals was great, but I haven't tried their new formulas.
Alima is decent, but it didn't have enough coverage for me.

I would highly doubt your issue is with mica. Many people automatically assume they cannot use mica, but the ingredient that usually causes issues for most people is the bismuth oxychoride. This is in most mainstream (well known) mineral brands. Many brands do not use talc, rice powder etc but you are definitely correct to stay away from those with dimethicone as you may experience major breakouts with those formulas. I have not used Rejuva not sure what they use in theirs. I know a lot of people have had problems with breakouts from everyday minerals since they started adding in the lauyroyl lysine (from coconut oil). I use Faerie and have never had issues with breakouts, they have sample kits too. I see you mentioned them have you tried the samples? I would say whatever company you try do a swipe on your jawline and wear it for the day and see if you have any issues. Mineral makeup is the best way to go overall and you should see skin clearing from switching but make sure to stay away from bismuth and silica as these also cause many breakout issues.

I'd highly recommend Alima Pure Satin Matte Foundation as well. The ingredients consist of Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, and Mica, and may contain Iron Oxides. I got it because I was allergic to BareMinerals, which broke me out horribly. However, I'm currently using my Laura Mercier Mineral Powder foundation because I find it more finely milled; Alima's powder was clogging my pores somewhat.

However, Laura Mercier's mineral foundation has trace amounts of bismuth oxychloride. If you're sensitive I wouldn't recommend it, but it's worked out really well for me.

I used Bare Minerals Matte thinking that this makeup would be really good for my skin. I normally have hormonal acne before my period. and I haven't had acne on my t zone really since high school BUT this broke me out horribly. Unfortunately I didn't realize until I had been using it for two months! I did some research and found out that the original bare minerals does have bismuth and the Matte formula does not... well the matte formula has calcium silicate!!! I went through ingredient after ingredient trying to figure out what it could be. Just google "calcium silicate"... one of the first few things to come up is a report from OSHA about it. And apparently this is some bad stuff... there are regulations about breathing it in and exposure to the skin. I am appalled that this could end up in a makeup!

Frustrated woman- They use silica, which is more often the cause of breakouts. Calcium silicate really isn't that terrible of an ingredient, you are reading the OSHA MSDS form which is for those handling truckloads of it and still isn't that big of a concern according to their MSDS. The breakouts you experienced are most likely from the silica not the calcium silicate. Silica is oil absorbing and some people can use it without issue but many of those with acne can experience breakouts in a major way from using it. You can buy silica on its own from some places online and do a test spot but I would pretty much bet this is the issue for you.

I am now using Alima because it doesn't contain anything but titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, mica and some have iron oxides. nothing else. even jane iredale has algae extract which breaks me out. I have used other products with silica and that doesn't seem to be a problem. The only ingredient I could come up with that could be a problem was the calcium silicate. Even if OSHA is concerned with the chemical for people handling by the truckloads, it's certainly not something I want to buff over my face. That's like saying asbestos is bad if you breathe it in and work in construction but it's ok if you rub a small amount on your face. No thank you. per the osha website "...If calcium silicate contacts the skin, workers should wash the affected areas with soap and water... Persons laundering the clothes should be informed of the hazardous properties of calcium silicate..." Also the US doesn't regulate cosmetics like other countries, hell they hardly regulate food.... just my opinion.

I've re-ordered Everday Minerals twice! I really like it. I've just been looking around at other companies just in case, but I'll probably just go back to EM, unless I want to try Hello Minerals. But yeah, no problems with EM!

Never tried Everyday Minerals but Hello Minerals is an amazing makeup for sensitive, reactive, acne prone skin. I'm sensitive to everything. Some days I feel like Bubble-Boy. Oh,well. Life goes on ....but at least I'll look good doin' it. wink!
