I had moderate back acne from the time I was 12 or 13 until about 3 months ago. I would get regular pustules and whiteheads and the occasional cyst. This is the only method that has ever
Worked for me:
1. Switch to a non comodegenic shampoo and conditioner. This is especially important for people with long hair. This means a shampoo that has no ingresdients with the word "sulphate" in them. I use Desert Organics Coconut shampoo and conditioner. In Canada this can be found at Superstore, Co-op or Shoppers Drug mart. The coconut kind is moisturizing which is good for my thick curly hair but I would not reccomend it for thin or straight hair. I'm not sure if this brand is available in the States but I know L'Oreal also makes a sulphate free hair care line. This step is very important - I ran out of my shampoo and used my old Herbal Essences and my bacne came back.
2. In the shower, wash with a salicylic acid body wash. I use Neutrogena - the orange one not the pink grapefruit. I would not recommend any scented products. Use a clean loofah or washcloth or your hand. I have not noticed a difference in any method. Leave the body wash to sit on your skin for 2-3 minutes.
3. After you shower and before bed (or in the morning and after you shower if you shower at night) apply Neostrata Body Smoothing Lotion. This is a 10% glycolic acid body lotion. It can be found for about $40 CAD at Shoppers Drug Mart. Apply a quarter sized amount on each side of your back (more may be needed if you are large). I know this lotion is expensive but it helps smooth existing acne and get rid of post acne marks. It is also a huge bottle.

Using these steps it took about 3 weeks to see results but it is the ONLY thing that has worked for me. Some other tips: use non comodegenic sunscreen on your back because glycolic acid increases sun sensitivity. I also take a multivitamin for women which may be relevant.

Good luck!
