Hey guys,
First post! I'll spare you the long intro, but I'm a 26 year old male who has had acne since 15 or so. Been on Accutane 3 times, and every topical under the sun. I have moderate to severe acne, with cysts and lesions semi-frequently.
ANYWAY,I just wanted to see if anyone had any answers about this.
I took Minocycline in January, and it worked BEAUTIFULLY for 7 months or so.
Fast forward to July, and the acne comes back, and worse than ever. It's bad. Nothing in my regimen changed, so I figure I developed a resistance to it.
So I'm on Doxy right now, about a week or so, but was wondering how long after stopping a particular antibiotic you become resistant to can you go back to it? Or can you?
I REALLY want to go back to the Mino. It started working within a week, and worked FLAWLESSLY for 7 months. But if I developed a resistance to it in July, can I go back if Doxy doesn't work?
Does anyone have any personal experience with developing a resistance to an antibiotic, and then going back onto it later and it working? How long did you wait?
I can't find any information about this online.
Thanks a bunch!
Antibiotics that WORK...but you develop a resistance to..?..

Hey Gordon, I had a bit of success with Oxytetracycline worked for about 7 months before I developed a resistance to it, I then tried Erythromycin which had no affect whatsoever. Doxycycline worked really quickly for me but only lasted about three months. My doctor then suggested rotating back to Oxytetracycline as sometimes they can work again after a break but after 3 months my acne was just the same! I'm now on trimethoprim as a last resort before roaccutane. Having said that everybody is different and you may find that going back to minocycline works for you or perhaps you could try one of the other antibiotics, there's quite a few out there. I guess at the end of the day tho antibiotics aren't really a cure (if a cure exists at all) and the acne does eventually come back.
Sorry this is not very positive but this is just my experience, like I said everyone's different.
Good luck with the doxy hopefully it will work better for you.

I have been on and off antibiotics, mainly minocycline for years. I'm 37 and have been going through this since I was 14. About a year or two ago, I was on, I believe, 60mg of Solodyn, which is a slow release form of minocycline for a few months and it worked. My derm took me off of it and the acne seemed to get worse than ever. She then put me on a higher dose, I think it was 90mg and it no longer worked as well. I was still breaking out, so that led me to believe I developed a resistance to it. I was off for about a year, my acne got worse than ever and I just started back on 100mg of generic minocycline twice a day, benzamycin cream in the morning and tretinoin .01 cream at night and my acne is rapidly disappearing. It seems as if the minocycline is doing its trick again but I believe this dose is a higher dose than I have ever had before. The only problem is that at 200mg I feel sick and don't feel like I can continue. I will give it more time though because I'm desperate to have clear skin at least for a little while!!! If I don't feel better, I'll try dropping it down to 100mg. Good luck. I hope you find whatever works for you!
