I have been putting off doing an elimination diet for a few months now. The other day I went to a dermatologist and they told me immediately that I need accutane. However, with the extensive list of side effects, I am not ready to risk it just yet. My acne is worse than it has ever been. My dog trainer brought up the elimination diet again. She recommended a local holistic doctor and recommended starting an elimination diet immediately. So I'm starting it today.

A little background:
I have been fighting moderate to severe acne for eleven years. During my teen years, my parents tried everything. I saw dermatologists for years, tried every topical and internal prescription known to man, and eventually went on Accutane at age 12. I was on Accutane for six months and, yes, it cleared my skin up. For awhile...

I had occasional breakouts all through high school. At age 19 I joined the military and my acne flared again. In the four years since then, I've used many different brand name acne regimens as well as quite a few all-natural ones. In the past year I've been seeing a dermatologist again. He put me on minocycline, benzoyl peroxide wash, and retin-a (old friend). I was on all of that for over six months before I gave up. It did nothing for me other than dry my skin out and help me build resistance to yet another antibiotic. I'm sure that Accutane would work again, but I don't want to go through that process again, nor do I have the money.

About six months ago, my acne got way worse, like nothing I have ever experienced. The left side of my face is slowly becoming one huge cyst. I have tried everything. So this is my last ditch effort before accutane.

My lifestyle and regimen:
I have been a vegetarian for just over a year. I don't drink milk, but I do eat goat cheese cheese, and ice cream. I run (2-3 miles) 3 to 5 times per week and do strength training 3 times per week. I do not drink soda, only tea (oolong and black) and water. I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, tofu, lentils, and whole grains.

I stopped using makeup a few weeks ago and only wear it on special occasions when I go out or have important appointments. I have been using purpose bar soap and witch hazel twice per day for a couple of months now.

So now I'll start this. My friend recommended eliminating the following linked plan and eliminating the phase one foods for one month and then slowly begin adding them back in.

I'll be updating with pictures weekly.

End of week one! The changes are extremely noticeable. All of the cysts under my skin are GONE! I'll update with more detail later today. I have had to cheat with crackers and ginger ale for twice due to surgery, but other than that, I've stuck to the elimination diet and it shows!

Yes. I've eliminated all dairy, soy, nuts, gluten, and corn products. I added sunflower butter (like peanut butter) and sweet potato chips, but one of those has made my skin oily and caused a couple of minor breakouts so now I'll have to eliminate those again until i can figure out which one is causing the problem.

No picture updates this week. I had surgery and broke out following two times being put under anesthesia as well as antibiotics. I then added in eggs and I believe those broke me out. I also believe now that I have candidiasis. I will be doing more research on this and continuing my diet. I have learned what to look for on labels and went shopping. It was nice to be able to get some different foods to try. I discovered brown rice pasta. It's pretty good! Anyway, more pictures to follow on Friday.

Hey there! I just discovered ur post, have u tried the Candida diet? I'm about to go on it. My acne is getting worse. I tried antibiotics, but I'm afraid I screwed up by taking them if my acne is caused by Candida! Ugh, I hate when I try something for acne and I make it worse than before! Plus money down the drain... I always noticed that sugar makes me break out, but now I'm starting to realize that ANY type of sugar, not just candy, causes problems. I'm going to try eliminating dairy, white flour, sugar. And only drink water. I tried green tea a while back, and OMG did that break me out. I think I have leaky gut syndrome too. :/
