Plan B works by introducing a buttload of hormones to your system so that it rejects any attempt by your body to actually conceive. It's only meant to be used in emergency situations--your body isn't meant to have those kinds of hormone spikes all the time, and upsetting your body's hormonal balance can bring on some nasty breakouts.

I'd suggest trying a non-hormonal birth control method (or methods) for a while, and no more Plan B, to give your body a chance to reset its natural hormonal rhythms. Then maybe get back on a regular birth control that supplies a steady dose of hormones instead of using Plan B. ; )

do you think the pill will help with my breakouts and balance out my hormones? i've been breaking out since jan 2011, really bad breakouts, make up can't hide, and they have been really painful. i do not know how else to stop the breakouts, i feel insecure going to job interviews with all these breakouts, at 23, i thought i was over acne, and now i have sever acne.

do you have suggestions on how to balance out hormones the natural way. i did my research and bought a book on hormones. plan b contains 1.5mg of levostegerol (which is a progesterone), and no estrogen. levosgetorol is a very androgenic progesterone, which is the reason why I'm having cystic acne. A month of bcpill has .6mg of estrogen and progesterone. it might be tht my body is lacking estrogen since i put in too much bad progesterone, and there are pills that have anti-androgenic progesterone like yasmin/ocella, ortho cyclen.

i've been to several dermatologist and they can't seem to fix me either...i've tried gels, and antibiotics. no help.

from what i remember of when i took the pills

jan.2011 - once
feb 2011 - twice
mar 2011 - twice
april may june - i stopped taking it....i was breaking out really bad already by this time.

july 2011 - once, had to take it again

but since then i've had uncontrollable cystic acne that causing serious scarring. pleaseee help me. btw, i tried ortho tri cyclen lo this month, and my skin freaked out n got worse. my derm swtiched me to ocella next month, and i don't know if its a smart move to continue taking birth control pills to help fix/cure/heal my cystic acne.

I actually took Plan B on the 8th of this month I believe and I suffered a bad breakout as well. When I found out it had a bunch of hormones in it and that it could cause that I freaked out, but also felt better knowing that eventually those hormones would wear off and everything would go back to normal. But I too suffered painful and just very reoccuring breakouts. I'm still dealing with them now. My only suggestion would be to get on a form of birth control that could help balance out your hormones and stop taking Plan B. I suggest getting Mirena. You don't have to worry about that for years. No need for Plan B. I'm staying away from Plan B myself.

To be honest, I'm not a doctor, so I don't know if it would be better to try to get on a birth control pill to try to regulate your hormonal situation, or if you'd be better off getting off all hormonal treatments and just letting your body correct itself naturally while using topical medications to treat your acne.

Personally, I'd go for the second option, since trying to correct a situation caused by too many hormones by taking more hormones seems counterproductive to me. You've been filling your body so full of extra hormones with all the Plan B, and it's thrown you all out of balance, which is bringing on breakouts. Just give your body a chance to get back to it's own proper hormonal levels, without taking anything to alter them. It'll probably take a couple of months, but your body will figure itself out, hormonally.

If you're worried about acne, there's always stuff like BP, SA, and about a zillion other non-hormonal treatment methods posted all over these boards that you can use instead.

Then, in a few months, once your body is back to where it should be by design, if you're still breaking out, you can try getting back on the birth control pill to try to tweak your hormonal situation in a much less drastic way than the hormone spikes that Plan B induces.

Just my two cents. ; )

i am curious tho....do birth control pills help balance out hormones?

are there natural supplements, vitamins that help balance out hormones without adding hormones.

btw, i just started ocella today. i'm going to give it 2 to 4 months to see results, last month i was on ortho tri cyclen lo and it made my acne worse.
