Hi, I've looked at the useful information on this site for a long time, but only now signed up to the message board as I'd like some help with choosing cosmetics for acne prone skin.

I don't suffer from servere acne, I'd say it was more mild than anything (it bothered me more ) but what i did have is pretty much under control now -I use the body shope tea tree range to keep it under control. But I don't want to risk messing my skin up with cosmetics. -I'm not even sure if cosmetics ever did cause me to breakout, but I just want to minimise the risk as far as possible now my skin is under control, just incase this would be a problem for me.

But I've been looking for some advice on the revlon colorstay foundation -which, looking at ingredients etc. it seems to be OK, except for SD Alcohol 40B (which is listed as the 8th ingredient on the list of ingredients) -depending on where I look this ingredient ranges from a 2 to a 5 in irritancy (5 being worst).

I know there are plenty of reviews out there, but I'd like to hear what individuals who have suffered from acne and used this product think about it. Would you recommend it?

Thanks for your help smile.gif

I'm a make-up freak, I want to become a professional MA, and Revlon Colorstay is one of my favorite foundations of all time! I've tried all the expensive brands- Laura Mercier Mineral Powder Foundation, MAC Foundations, Bare Escentuals Matte, Make-up Forever HD Foundation, Clinique Superfit, Lancome foundations, and I loveee Colorstay.

1st of all, it doesn't make me break out more than usual. 2nd, the coverage is absolutely amazing. For a product that doesn't make me break out, it's coverage is on the full side, meaning it will cover even huge cystic pimples (and I need that), 3rd, it's staying power...it will stay on your face like none other. It basically stays on until you wash it off. (I have extremely oily skin). I mean just test it on your hand, it won't come off even with gentle soaps......so to that end, you have to make sure you have a good cleanser or good make-up remover when you wash your face at night.. Also you have to get your color right or it will make you look orange if you go too dark.

I am a huge makeup junkie, I have tried many foundations and I must say that I absolutely hate Revlon Colorstay. I recommend the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation. It is light to medium coverage, you can build it, yet it still looks incredibly natural. Also, what most people don't realize is, you don't need to pile on foundation, it just makes your makeup look cakey and heavy. If you apply a thin layer of foundation to even things out and then go back with a good heavy duty concealer, then set with powder, you will be fine. I know some people don't have money to buy a $50 foundation, but I truly believe in 'you get what you pay for.' For me my skin is very important so it's something that I'm willing to make an investment in and spend a little more money on better products for it. All the makeup products listed in my signature do not contain ANY, not even ONE pore clogging ingredient. I've checked thoroughly.

I adore the Revlon colorstay foundation, it doesn't break me out and my skin feels nice and soft when I've applied it.
But it doesn't fully cover my acne marks and during the day it does make my face look a bit shiny and one main drawback is that, for me, it doesn't last all day. All day being a school day for me (7.30am-2.45pm). Im thinking of buying a makeup base so that my foundation and powder can last.
Make sure though to get the right one for your skin. There is the combination-oily and normal-dry skin. I have the combination-oily.
Recently my skin got sort of try so when I applied the foundation, it went on all cakey neutral.gif
I guess there are a few cons to this foundation but overall its quite good

Thanks for all the feedback - I'll definitely pick up a bottle when I have some money. Just wondering, does this foundation oxidise and go orange after a while of wearing it or does it stay the same colour as when you put it on??

Also thanks for recommending the Chanel foundation - I don't really have the money for that right now, but I'll definitely check it out if I ever do smile.gif

Well from my experience it doesn't but then again my skintone is a bit orangey/bronzey so I cant tell if it does go orange or if it is just orange from that start

Hi! I've recently just uploaded a video about this foundation! Its really good. I used the acne.org regimen to get rid of my acne but Im left with a bunch of hyperpigmentation and I tried many different types of concealers and foundations from high end to drugstore and this is by far the best and it covers them up great in just one step. Check out my vid to see results! biggrin.gif

there are other youtube videos that show application tips for revlon cs, since the member nvr posted her link. when compared to other liquid foundations for oily, acne-prone skin, revlon cs is one of the best to me. what i love the most about it is the coverage. you can use it as a foundation, but a lot of the time i would use it as a concealer. it also stays put for a good while. i think it claims to stay on for 16 hrs, which is a definite stretch, but again, i have oily skin. i get a few hrs of wear with this before i have to blot. right now i'm using mac prolong wear, which i really like, but i would still rec revlon cs. in terms of it it making me breakout .. no, it didn't. and one of the weirdest things about cs is that it can really cover, yet look natural at the same time.

I agree with melodes. Revlon colorstay doesn't break me out too and the skin feels really soft after application. But yeah, it doesn't stay on long for me either. My skin is really oily, like I gotta use a blotter every hour. So yea, I'd have to reapply the foundation. So I guess it depends on your skin type as well. If you want something long lasting and you have oily skin, Revlon colorstay might not be a good option unless you don't mind reapplying makeup along the way.

i also have to reapply when using cs, but i only reapply it as a concealer. on the rest of my face i just retouch with a powder foundation bc it's easier. i'm pretty sure you'd be able to find a setting powder n primer that could extend the wear. i like the ELF mineral booster in sheer. using a small amt of it before and after applying CS helps a lot with staying power.

whoa whoa whoa. I have oily skin and the reason I love colorstay is because it does stay on.

Are you all setting it with powder? What kind?

If you use less foundation and less powder it actually stays on longer. At least it does for me. The more that is applied the more makeup that mixes with the oils on your face and it slides off because there's a lot on the skin. It gets heavy and slides off.

I'm positive girls who wear too much of any makeup (there are some that reply powder throughout the day) are plagued with having to continually re-apply. It's like a domino effect - the more you put on, the more you will have to reapply faster and faster each time because it quickly becomes an oil slick, literally. Try using less and just layering on the areas you need it, then apply a light layer of loose powder. Less is definitely more with any makeup in terms of how much you apply. Don't reapply, just blot when your skin gets oily. I don't know... mine always holds up and my t-zone gets very oily . It's not 100% perfect but it's the best I've tried for such a cheap price!

Oh, and I don't use any primers.

Hey nessa, I actually use a little amount of the foundation and when I blot my face that's when the foundation comes off. I don't know how to make it stay on longer. Maybe it's because I use a primer?? Do you recommend that I stop using a primer?? :)

@nessa: i'm simply saying what works for me. yes i apply powder before CS and after, but it doesn't make my skin more oily through out the day. i've tried applying it alone, and blotting, like you say, but that doesn't extend the wear for me. primer also helps me creates a smoother application. again, i am not saying this will work for everybody. i have xtremely oily skin, and i normally have to set cs with a powder. when i said i use the ELF mineral booster before and after, i use a light application, and i don't think it feels heavy at all.

Yeah, of course. Everyone's skin is different. If it works for you, that's great. It definitely doesn't for me and I just don't like applying makeup over the oiliness. This brings up the point that people need to experiment and just see what works best for them.

I think it's best to try and not reapply, first (speaking to others), just because it decreases the potential of break outs. If it's not necessary to reapply, then don't add more than what is needed to your skin.

I don't think foundation coming off is necessarily bad. It's practically unavoidable with oily skin (in my opinion). Oil is one of the best ways to remove makeup so when our skin produces oil, some of the makeup is bound to come off if you blot. The plus, though, is that you reduce shine. Blotting, for me, does remove a tiny bit of makeup but it doesn't really reduce the coverage. Then again, I'm not someone who wants 100% coverage so maybe the effects of blotting to me aren't very noticeable.

I'm not sure about the primer. It depends on how much you gain from its use. It's never given me noticeably better results in the look or longevity makeup but it does give me comedones, so I don't bother. This is silicone-based primers, though. I tried Kaolin powder as primer and, again, no noticeable difference. I don't want to put more on my face than what I already do if it's not necessary. If the primer absorbs oil and keeps makeup looking matte for longer, I say keep using it.

I think it's easy for people to feel the smooth feeling it creates and think that makeup application will be better. Either way, I don't notice any difference in the end result. Maybe I will try more primers in the future when I can afford to do so because I know a lot of makeup artists swear by them but form my personal experience, they didn't do much for me except make my wallet lighter and give me clogged pores.
