Hi, I've just been prescribed Trimethoprim by my dermatologist for 4 months after becoming resistant to lymecycline. This is basically my last resort before accutane (which I'd rather not take because of the infamous side effects). Has anybody had any experience with this antibiotic regarding it's effectiveness or lack thereof?
Thanks,
Tom smile.gif

Hi Tom, I've been using trimethoprim for two weeks now, similar to you it's kind of the last trick in the box before Roaccutane. So far I've noticed absolutely no difference whatsoever. Maybe it's too early to tell or maybe antibiotics are no longer effective for me having tried four different types previously some of which worked for a while. I've always been against roaccutane in the past cos I know it's not an easy process. However at the age of 37 I'm kinda thinking perhaps six months of hell would be worth it if I never had to suffer another summer like this one! i.e. Not doing stuff with the kids such as camping and swimming because I'm too embarrassed. I've been reading a lot of the info on this site ref accutane, both the good and the bad. Perhaps you may find this useful too.
Anyway good luck with the trimethoprim, out of interest what dose are you on and have you had any side effects? I'm on 400mg and I've had no side affects other than if I take it before breakfast it puts me off my food.

I'm on 600mg. I've felt a little nauseous sometimes and got a bit of dry skin but that's about it.
I've been on it two weeks too, I haven't seen much improvement either but it's early days yet so fingers crossed!

Hi Tom, just wondering how your getting on, have you seen any improvement yet? I'm feeling pretty low at the moment cos mine just seems to be getting worse not better!!
Seriously hope your having better luck.
