Hey, so a couple of weeks ago I posted a post asking how to stop white gunk from reappearing constantly. And, I finally figured it out! I used to exfoliate and washed too often, which increased sebum production. I used to wash my face twice a day (one in the morning, one at night) with my acne cleanser and I also exfoliated with sugar and lemon every night. Now, I've changed my regimen. I only wash at night now and exfoliate once or twice a week (at most). My skin is still oily, but all the white sebum stringy things that used to come out of my pores is gone! and my plugged pores are decreasing!
Hope this helps at least one other person!

I hope it works for you..
the question most would wonder is.. is it only appearing to be decreasing because your regimen is exfoliating your pores well.. or... is it actually treating the problem itslef (reducing the stuff that causes the cloggage or changing the skin environment somehow so the cloggage responds to the change by decreasing)? Well the question is.. if it does work... let's say you try this for 2 months and then you stop the regimen, would things be ok.. or would the cloggage happen again?
Again I hope it works for you.. Unfortunately long term testing.. is indeed one of sciences great pitfalls.

O.P., did these white stringy things enlarge you pores?

Congrats on finding something that works! I also found that my pores appeared a lot less clogged and I had less "stringy" pores once I limited exfoliation; in my case I stopped it completely. Within 4-5 weeks of not exfoliating, the white stringy clogged areas in the creases of my nose are about 95% gone, and no longer even really visible. My sebaceous filaments are still there, but I am not really bothered too much by those. Not exfoliating often also helped these issues about a year ago.
I'd assume it helps not really because you are exfoliating less, but because you are dehydrating and irritating your face less. Exfoliation is itself dehydrating, so it makes sense that removing or reducing it would help. Especially when using harsh additions like lemon.

agreed, but what about exofliating with a cotton pad, or just wiping your face with a towel.
Sure enough, these cant be too harsh

... Use your own judgment.
my judgement tells me it shouldn't be... but i am still irked about it

The reason I think I'm treating the problem is because I'm causing my skin to go into less of an overdrive. If I exfoliate and clean less, I dehydrate my skin less. If my skin is dehydrated, my skin automatically creates even more sebum to prevent dryness, causing more of those yucky sebum strings.

what type of exfoliation do you do?
BTW, regarding those yucky sebum strings, are they hard when you touch them. Also, can a gentle rub (in an up and down motion) make these things come out?

I used to do lemon with sugar and honey.
And yes, simply swiping it or scratching the area made all this nasty come onto my finger/nail. it was occurring mostly in my chin and where my nose met the rest of my face (the sides).

I've actually started exfoliating less often too and it's helping! I used to exfoliate with baking soda almost every night but now that I've reduced it to twice a week at most, my face is alot less irritated.
