Hey guys,
So I've been on Minocycline for mild, but persistent, acne for about 5 weeks now and in this time I keep getting a sore throat and get really 'flemmy.' I got sick when I first started minocycline (a sore throat) but it was gone within a few days, then a couple of weeks later I got really swollen glands under my jaw that were quite sore, then they got better and now a week or so later I've gotten another sore throat with a sore and flemmy cough! I understand that minocycline, as with most antibiotics, does not descriminate against good or bad bacteria and instead just kills both, so this is probably why I am sick, but my main question is this: what do I do to rid myself of this problem )if possible)??

Any help would be much appreciated! Also, a separate question...my skin has been really dry lately due to tretinoin (which in turn makes my skin oily because my body overcompensates) and was wondering if I could use a non-comedonal moisturizer WITHOUT creating more blemishes? I've never really been one to use moisturizer simply because I don't want to cause any more pimples!

Would love to hear back about these two issues, especially the minocycline dilemma - thanks everyone! biggrin.gif

So to answer your first question concerning minocycline...first off minocycline is not an immuneosuppresant drug, so it will not effect your immune system. You can be getting sick for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with minocycline. If you are having throat issues with minocycline then drink more water and make sure not to lay down for 20-30 minutes after taking it because it can cause acid reflux that will temporarily damage the esophagus. For your second question, you definitely should use a non-comedonal moisteruizer because then your skin wont force itself to replenish sebum at an increased rate which can clog pores and promote acne. A good non-comedonal moisteruizer will not cause breakouts, but you may have to try multiple ones to see which one works for you the best. Good luck!!

Hello,
I've also been taking minocycline for about 5 weeks. I notice that it makes me quite dizzy, slightly nauseous and affects my appetite, mind you that could also be the result of nervous energy from being so stressed about my damn face!! Anyways, I spoke to a knowledgeable friend who told me that I should be taking acidopholus and bifidus supplements. I've been taking them for about 4 days and I've already noticed that my stomach isn't bugging me as much.
As for moisurizer, I tried a few different things.... I didn't like Cetaphil because I need a sunscreen as well during the day. I tried an Aveno but it was very perfumy and made me feel itchy... I've actually been using Proactive's Oil Free Moisurizer with Sunscreen for the past 5 days and so far so good!

Getting a sore throat and swollen glands are common signs of a sign of allergic reaction. I hope you've seen the doctor and gotten off Mino.
