Is exfoliating good or bad while on accutane? I've heard you are supposed to avoid it. That's gonna be really hard for me, I love exfoliating!

I use oatmeal as a cleanser and it exfoliates but it's super gentle... idk it's kinda gross but it does the job

Don't exfoliate with any scrubs. You will irritate your skin. You need to watch over your skin like it's a newborn baby while taking Accutane. Be very careful. Accutane temporarily thins the skin and makes it much more susceptible to scratches, wounds, and damage. The oatmeal that This Kid suggested will work great.

Thank you, I definitely will keep that in mind and not exfoliate!

DAY 1!!!!!!!

Ah, the day I've been waiting for for (what seems like) forever. I finally swallowed the good ole pill. I am very excited to get this journey started and I cannot wait until 6 months from now when I will hopefully have perfect skin. Here's to being clear by Christmas!

Obviously there are no side effects to announce yet but I'm sure those will be here soon enough. Starting tonight this is my face routine:

PM:
-Shower then wash face with Cetaphil cleanser
(If anyone knows of a good, non-harsh makeup remover cleanser please let me know! I'm in need of a good one because I feel the Cetaphil doesn't really work well for a makeup remover.)
-Pat dry face, give it a little while to cool down before apply Cetaphil daily moisturizer
-Apply vaseline cocoa butter all over lips to avoid dryness

AM:
-Wash face with Cetaphil cleanser
-Apply Cetaphil daily moisturizer all over to face
-Apply makeup. I use Laura Mercier silk creme foundation and BareMinerals concealer.
-constant reapplication of Carmex lip products and Aquaphor during the day

Oh and one last thing- I've heard some good things about St. Ives brand of face washes and lotions, etc. Anyone here tried them out while on Accutane and liked it?

Here's to a great 6 month course on Accutane! Good luck to everyone here. smile.gif I look forward to sharing this journey with you guys.

Name: Jamie
Started Accutane on July 28th, 2011
6 month course
Height: 5"4'
Weight: 110
Age: 18

To remove your makeup, I would suggest using extra virgin olive oil. You only need a very minimal amount to remove all the makeup off your face. You can use it to remove eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara as well. The EVOO will definitely help as you advance in your Accutane course. You will be extremely dried out throughout your course. Olive oil won't clog your pores. Some people get scared when another person suggests using oil on their face, but don't get freaked out! It is cheap compared to other cleansers and a little goes a long way. The bottle will last for a very long time. Also, it is a triple threat. It cleanses your skin, removes your makeup, and adds needed moisture to your skin. amused.gif

I would suggest Aveeno Positively Radiant Makeup Removing Foaming Cleanser, works great and is non-comedogenic smile.gif .. Also, don't wait too long after cleansing your face to apply your moisturizer, the moisturizer gets absorbed better on damp skin! Good luck with accutane, i'm jealous sad.gif lol.

Ah thanks for both tips! I went out and bought the Aveeno last night. smile.gif I love Aveeno products! And oh wow thanks for that tip too haha it does make sense to apply to moisturizer right after!

DAY 2:

So, obviously my face looks the same. Nothing really to report except I already feel my lips less moisturized than they did before these 2 days. It really hit me today that this was gonna be a long journey. I'm ready to take it on but at the same time I'm super anxious and scared. I'm constantly reapplying the carmex and vaseline at night to try and knock this dryness out! No face dryness yet, just the lips...they just feel different. Hard to explain. No headaches or anything yet though! I'm keeping hope. smile.gif

Hey,

Good luck on the accutane, I hope it ends up working for you. And as for the side effects, don't worry, you'll feel them soon enough. smile.gif Just make sure to moisturize your face and lips alot, drink alot of water, eat healthy, and stay off alcohol. I'm just about 2 months along, and I've only been seeing improvement.

Thank you! I'm actually going into food and nutrition sciences to become a dietitian so eating healthy isn't too hard for me! I will definitely keep drinking lots of water. I'm glad you've only seen improvement, that's GREAT! Good luck with your course.

I wanted these to serve as my 'before' pictures, since I never really posted any and I'd like to have pictures for each step in this Accutane journey. My skin is freakin' out right now, after only two days away from my Duac. Uggghhh. I thought this would be the best time to show my before pictures since this is the worst my skin has been in a little while! It'll be good to compare to by the end of this course. smile.gif Here they are! Zero makeup on.

Day 3 coming tomorrow since I posted day 2 this morning!

Oh and does anyone with proir accutane experience think 40mg is too much to start out with for me? I keep second guessing myself. I know derm knows what she's doing but I've been reading things that are saying it's a little too high. I am 18 years old, 5"4' and weigh 110 pounds. What do you guys think?

DAY 3:

I dunno if it's me just overlooking things but I think my chin acne has definitely gotten worse. :\ That used to be my least problem area and it seems to be exploding. Lips still feel the same. I don't go like 5 minutes without some type of moisturizer. My face just feels different. I'd dare to even say it feels MORE oily than it was before. Taking it one day at a time!

Like you said in one of my posts it must be your skin reacting from being off previous medications you were using. Also, don't worry about the side effects. You will be experiencing them soon enough. Unless you have an amazing moisturizig schedule biggrin.gif The extra oiliness must be from the moisturizer (I'm guessing).

And you should be fine on 40mg.

Yeah, that's definitely what I'm experiencing right now! I think I may be applying more moisturizer than I have in the past which could contribute to the oiliness haha. But I'm just so scared for the side effects so I'm starting early!
