Okay, so I have reluctantly gotten last fall's prescription of Differin 0.1 out of the drawer. I really don't want to become dependent on a prescription (espcially because I'll have to quit when we decide to have another child), but nothing else has worked so here it how it's been.

BTW, I'm a female in my late 20s and since Jr. High, I've always just gotten occasional cysts around that time. I didn't like it, but some make up would hide it and in retrospect, it wasn't that bad from my old pictures! Apparently having kids changed that, because now I have some serious hormonal acne going on along my jawline chin and cheeks, with a few bonus whiteheads on my forehead. I've never had black heads and I have no clue why. Everyone's skin is soooo different!

Here's what I've tried:
Proactive for the better part of 7 years. This usually works for about six months and then it kind of stops and goes back to occasional cyst, except when I quit using it, it gets worse than it was to begin with. So yay, it wrecked the way my skin functions. So, last summer 2010 I tried Murad. Yeah, it doesn't have BP...bad idea. The lotion was nice. The IB was not so nice....worst breakout of my life. Ever since, I have had the same breakout all over my cheeks and jawline for off and on for a year. Ugh.
So that led me to The Dermatologist...I got Tetracycline, Benzaclin (generic), and Differin 0.1
This left my queezy and red and itchy...back to Proactive...better than nothing. Except, after about 5 months it stopped working again and I started getting those deep cysts. OUCH! (no white heads though, weird right?)
So I read that Differin works deep in the skin which sounds good for deep cysts.

April 23-Week one- Differin 0.1 cream and Dan's Regimin AM. Nothing kind of oily. Not better or worse. I have used it every night without fail since this day! I also used Almay clear complexion foundation and spot concealer.

Week two-Ouch. Peeling and red, but I just started waiting an hour and moisturizing with Dan's lotion at night. Which helped alot. I used Dessert Essence Jojoba oil too, to help many mornings.

Week 3- I was really starting to rethink this. I started breaking out a little more and still pretty red. I kept doing same thing, which kept the redness under control, not the zits.

Week 4- This week my left cheek got nearly clear. Yay smile.gif My face didn't feel so bad either.

Week 5- More new zits kind of here and there, like my nose, forehead, jawline, and temple. Bummer. Still used the same stuff. Whiteheads all over my jawline on the right.

Week 6- Ooops! Apparently salicylic acid does the opposite thing that differin does, so time for new make up. Swiched to Almay line smoothing liquid & concealer. Also getting more used to the differin and less redness. Using Olay complete sensitive in the daytime after Dans.

Week 7- Well my left cheek looks awesome! Just one tiny blemish. AND my right cheek and jawline blew up! All those white heads turned into zits! Wow, I didn't know this was possible, it's like the murad breakout all over again. These scars are going to suck. Forehead looks better though, lol.

Week 8- Okay so the differin doesn't seem to be irritating me at all and these zits have got to go.
So I have bumped up the BP and am seeing if I can tolerate oxy 10 for awhile until this cheek clears up!

am
Cetaphil (for oiliness)
Oxy BP wash
Wait 5 min
Old Poractive toner (for the glycolic fading properties) I've ordered some new from Alpha Hydrox
Oxy 10 spot treatment all over, it's pretty thin
Wait as long as I can before I leave. at least 10
Olay complete sensitive
Almay Line smoothing Liquid and concealer

pm
Step 1-take the make up off as soon as I know I don't need to go anywhere
I tried OCM, but I just really think it made things worse, so
I 've used Garnier wipes
and now I'm trying Olay age defying wipes, neither seem to cause any
Step 2-cleanse, Cetaphil and then OXY 10 Wash ( I don't think it cleans that deep, which is why I use the cetaphil first. I use to oxy to kill any bacteria, because I'm trying to only put on the differin at night so I can know that it's not interacting with anything.
let skin dry for at least 30 min, they say this helps with irritation
Step 3
Smooth Differin 0.1 cream all over, avoiding eyes

for fading marks and deep cleaning:
I wish I had a schedule for this, but I just try to do something every couple of days.
I'm going to try to do a glycolic peel once a week. I have some from proactiv that are 10% (their wipes), and have ordered new from Alpha hydrox. It burns and tingles, but not too bad and just makes my face kind of pink. I only use cetaphil before this usually in the afternoon, then differin pm. I think it helps the marks a little and deep cleans.
I also try to use a Kaolin mask every few days. I alternate between proactive sulfur mask and neutrogena cleanser/mask 3.5% BP. I leave it on for about 10 min.
I just bought the cheep Queen Helene mint julep mask at walmart the other day, but I'm not sure I want to try anything else yet. So I will wait awhile until I am feeling braver.

This seems to be helping and I was only a little red over the weekend. The swollen zits on my cheek are going down and I am hopeful that it will look like the left side soon! smile.gif

I am busy and forgetful, but I will try to update soon...I don't want to be one of those people that gets clear and forgets to tell anyone what worked!

i'm in a hurry, please excuse the likelihood of excessive typos...

Week 9

Yikes! Two new cysts on my left jawline, where I haven't had any in quite awhile Posted Image Also, the old cysts on the right are fading, but the little white bumps turned into new ones, that are under the skin and super inflamed...ouch! I'm hoping this will mark the end of the initial breakout, but it's hard to say. I might have the same complaint next week. I'm going to keep trying since it's not even 12 weeks yet. Hopefully, things will improve. I have so many new scars it's ridiculous!

I added St. Ives apricot scrub, before I use a bp cleanser (pm), in hopes that some of the little clogged pores will go away before they come to the surface and get huge! (there are only a few left, and hopefully no more to come...)

This week, I'm trying stronger stuff to clear up this mess. Then, hopefully I can use differin at night and a lower bp in the am. I'm such a product junkie *sigh*

am
Acnefree severe bp wash 2.5
acnefree severe glycolic toner
acnefree severe 10%
acnefree severe retinol lotion
olay complete when going outside for a little while
neutrogena spf 100 when headed to the pool, park, etc... for several hours
Almay line smoothing foundation and concealer (spf 15)

pm
garnier wipes
st ives apricot scrub
oxy wash 10%
differin cream 0.1

I'm not too dry, and no peeling surprisingly...hopefully it's not because i'm producing more oil, oh no!...Vicious cycle. Have an appt. with an endocrinologist soon, b/c apparently I have a slight hormonal imbalance..no surprise there considering the way my face looks right now. Not sure if treatment will be worth it though because many of those drugs are harmful. Zits or heart disease & cancer...Ugh! Just watched food inc. and super size me, lol. This has inspired me to go as organic as I can, which is hard to find nearby, but I'm hoping that might help clear things up, and hey, I might even lose that 10 extra pounds Posted Image I'm thinking saw palmetto or other herbs in the future as a possibility (Vitamins are good, but they didn't really seem to help anything), but I want to give the topicals a fair chance and hear from the dr. what exactly my problem is first. I am so sick of thinking about this....

Still using the differin..still taking lots of vitamins...still using oil free/noncomegenic everything... I have had clear days and not so clear days. I tried LoEstrin and it completely altered my mood and personality and gave me lots of little pimples (like a month long bout of PMDD...Yikes) After discontinuing that last week I'm now covered with cysts on my chin. I'm pretty sure that unless I want to live on antibiotics and have my face peeling off, I will have cysts. I give...about to slap on some make up and go to class!

Differin & BP=fail :/

It's December and I am so over differin as of last week. I gave it a long long long time to work...since April I believe, and I give. It doesn't work the miracle they claim. Basically I got an initial breakout, that got better, and then not so much, and then worse...but not as bad as before.... Then I started getting lots of clogged pores and cysts. This is not the worst my skin has looked by any means but it certainly is not great either. I have currently about 5-10 healing cysts.

I have decided to go back to what I used when my skin was decent but not perfect, which is basically what all the research says. Use salicylic acid to unclog pores and BP to kill bacteria. I hate all the irritation, but it's better than scarring.

a.m.
Neutragena oil free acne wash SA 2%
Stridex alcohol free pads (the lack of alcohol helps alot!) SA 2%
Equate BP lotion 2.5% (compare to proactiv, finally!)
Olay complete oil free moisturizer, sensitive skin (spf 15)
Covergirl clean makeup sensitive skin foundation (lightest shade) I never expected to love this b/c its so cheap, but its great!
Almay clear complexion concealer SA 1%
Covergirl clean oil absorbing pressed powder (applied with Revlon brush, not the puff)

p.m.
Remove makeup-Loreal 360 sensitive skin (love the scrublet, I've never seen so much makeup come off!)
Neutragena oil free acne wash SA 2%
Stridex alcohol free pads SA 2%
Equate BP lotion 2.5%
when I feel extra dry...Clearasil overnight lotion SA 2% (not on differin days)
update: Maybe Differin every other night to create a sort of epiduo experience...hoping to use it less and less though!

Twice a week
Exfoliate: St. Ives Apricot scrub
Clear pores: Proactive sulfur mask...Love this and it can be found on Amazon cheep! Posted Image

Using this mess of somewhat irritating products seems to be working...still pondering the retinoids actually because its supposed to be good for scarring, and maybe it was. They say not to mix SA and differin, but hey what they say didn't exactly fix my face...so its only been a few days since I quit using it and I may try to add it back in as a last step at night...maybe like 30 min to an hour later to minimize interactions....so I will update later!

Also! I bought distilled water & I am going to start that tomorrow each time I wash! I know we have a lot of iron and rust in our water, yuk! I've heard lots of good things about distilled water and I hope it will help. I really shouldn't try so many things at once but I am desperate since I am getting new scars every day!!!!

I went ahead and put on the differin just before bed, because I'm afraid my skin will freak out if I go cold turkey. My plan is to use is sparingly every other day and see how that goes. I'd love to go off of it, but for now I'll just see if I can handle it with everything else.
Today, my face is pink and irritated, but not peeling like it was! It is definitely smoother. The cyst on my chin that started yesterday actually went down overnight, instead of getting more inflamed...this has not happened in awhile. AND...nothing new for a change!!! All the old ones are shrinking for sure and seem to be healing more naturally rather than exploding first, and I am making a serious effort not to mess with them, because I just do not need anymore scars. I'm hoping the irritation will subside in a few weeks. I remember when I used to use proactive, I would get really red for the first few weeks, and then it got better.

I am clear. I broke down and tried FACE REALITY. Save up your money and pay these wonderful people to clear up your skin for good. They provide fantastic individualized care for your skin. Even with the cost of the products, I am certain that I will save money in the long run, because I will not be going to the dermatologist or trying every new drugstore product.

After doing the initial consult, I began a personalized regimen that did not irritate my skin, which made it easy to stick with! 8 weeks later, clear skin. Even when I get a hormonal breakout, its small and goes away so fast! I mean one or two pimples compared to 5-10 cysts!

I am so happy to have written this post! I did not ever think it would happen. I am so thankful!

Lia,

Im very happy for you that you find a solution. I could tell you from the beginning that the stuff you uses and the variety of it, it was way to much irritating for your skin. Differin en doxy is a great combo, but not together with other active products.I hope you will stay clear in the future.
