I'm not taking it for acne--I have mono and it resulted in a sinus infection, so I'm on doxycycline.

On the information that came with my prescription, it says this:

"...doxycycline may not work as well if you take it with food or milk (or anything high in calcium)...Take this medication 2 to 3 hours before or after taking any products containing aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, or bismuth subsalicylate. Some examples include antacids, certain forms of didanosine, quinapril, vitamins/minerals, dairy products (such as milk, yogurt), and calcium-enriched juice. These products bind with doxycycline, preventing your body from fully absorbing the drug."

Hope everyone knows this, because my pharmacist didn't tell me all that. He just said don't take it with dairy, which is just one of the things in that list.

I'm on doxycycline. I normally take it right after lunch , I have been avoiding dairy food for quite sometime now so I dunno really. I'm also taking stress tabs that include zinc, vitamin e , c and a shit load of other things. I dunno if that would reduce the effectiveness of doxycycline!

Zinc is one of the things it says binds to doxycycline. So apparently you should only take those tabs 2-3 hours before/after the doxycycline.

QUOTE
Food reduces absorption of doxycycline by approximately 20 percent, and iron,
calcium, magnesium, and aluminum may also reduce its absorption through chelation.

Heck yes. But it makes me sick if I don't take it with food.

Always take doxycyline on an empty stomach, or else it doesn't work. Here's my story. I was taking it with a meal everyday for acne, and noticed zero difference. I started taking it on an empty stomach without eating for 2 hours after and my acne cleared up within days. It made me sick too but thats how I knew it was working.

If you take it with food it really does negate all the effectiveness, much more than 20%.

That is not true. I always took it after I ate otherwise I would puke my pill up & it had GREAT effectiveness on me, and worked fast too. All people react differently to antibiotics.
