I have non-inflammatory acne (clogged pores, whiteheads, blackheads) and finally its started to clear up, so I wanted to share what's been working for me. If your skin looks like mine did (see attached picture) then you might want to try this out.

At around my junior year in high school I started to get those closed comedone whiteheads under the skin. I had tried basically everything and nothing worked for about two years. I was fed up so I made an appointment with my doctor and asked her what she thought I should do. She recommended "Azelex" and got me a prescription.

Starting at around November 2010 I began applying "Azelex" once in the morning and once at night before bed. I also gently exfoliated morning and night with "Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash". During this period of time I was on break from school and wore no make-up. At around the end of August I noticed a change in my skin. The bumps were beginning to disappear and my skin was getting smoother.

Fast forward to now, May 2011, and all those bumps in the picture are basically gone. There's been a dramatic change. I still have some time to go before I'm completely clear but the change has been spectacular. I no longer feel a hundred tiny little bumps when I run my fingers over my skin.

I don't know if this will work for you, but it worked for me. It's been the only thing that's worked for me.

- Azelex is around $30 with insurance. W/o insurance around $300
- The face wash I used varied (I don't think it particularly mattered that much because Azelex did all the work) but the face washes I primarily used were...
- Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash - $6 - $18 depending on where you buy it.
- Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser - $5 - $19 depending on where you buy it.

I also went through a 3 month period where I applied "Zap-Zyt" (a 10% benzoyl peroxide gel) two times during the day and then Azelex at night before bed. This made my skin super clear for about a month and half but then started to loose it's potency shortly after that. It may work for you though. (Zap-Zyt is $5). I still use it as a spot treatment.

This is a long term process, but if you're persistent it may work for you. Keep in mind my main problem was whiteheads. Hope this helps.

I use checks and balances and love it! I didn't have any breakouts but I started breaking out again since I stopped using retin a. I'm back on it now and am hoping that checks and balances will continue to work well while I go through my initial break out/peeling period again (sigh).
