My daughter has been on doxycycline for quite some time for her acne. She recently was complaining about pains in her throat. We took her to the emergency room where they had to do an endoscopy. they found a bleeding ulcer in her esophagus. Luckily she will recover within 6 weeks. The GI doctor specifically said it was the result of taking this medication over time. Her dermatologist and any information on this drug says nothing about this side effect. Please be careful taking this or any drug. I know my daughter was happy with the acne result but this is too high a price to pay for clear skin.

Though this isn't quite the right forum for this, thanks for the post. All doxycycline users should note that PLENTY OF WATER (at least 8 oz) should be taken with a dose of doxycycline in order to prevent this issue, and the user should NOT lay down for at least half an hour after taking a dose.

You might want to thoroughly double-check any forms that should have come with the prescription -- mine definitely warns about the need to take plenty of water and not lie down for reasons I described above. My dermatologist also specifically warned me about this happening, so I'm very surprised your daughter didn't receive any notice about this.
