Choosing Foundations: Help Needed!

My skin type is combination. I'm pretty oily in the T-Zone, and oily-normal on the sides of my face. I have Moderate acne with the whole shabang: inflamed bumps, white heads, black heads, etc. but I only really break out on the sides of my face and jaw line..
I'm sort of obsessed with makeup cuz I'm so insecure with my face, but am smart enough to use oil free and non-comedogenic, clean my brushes, change my sponge everyday, and remove it when I'm home from school. I don't wear too much of it, I'd like to think.
By my 2nd period of school, I'm already shiny and I hate putting more on because it looks so terrible and unnatural.. I've tried blotting sheets, tissues, napkins, etc. I want something that won't slide off and come off on my finger if I accidentally touch my face!
I'm still deciding which foundations to use. Recommendations are welcome.. A list of things I've tried:
- Almay TLC Liquid Foundation (sticky, wipes off, still oily, bad color choice)
- Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation (ok, still oily)
- Revlon Colorstay Loose Mineral Powder (weird texture, cakey)
- Studio Gear- Studio Matte Liquid Foundation (sheer, broke out)
- Covergirl TruBlend Liquid Foundation (sheer, I 'm still oily)
- Covergirl TruBlend Compact Powder (sheer, I 'm still oily)
- Covergirl Oil Free Liquid Foundation (sheer, I 'm still oily)
- Covergirl Oil Free Compact Powder (sheer, I 'm still oily)
- Maybelline Purestay Compact Powder (weird texture, cakey)
- Maybelline SHINEFREE Compact Powder (cakey, I 'm still oily)
- MAC I refuse to use because it's cakey and so bad for your skin
- etc..
Since I'm an active theatre student, its important to have clear skin on stage, or at least the appearance of an even-toned, matte complection. Plus, it would boost my confidence not having to stare at redness every day.
Should I give up with the makeup? I'm not sure I could!

I've been using Bare Minerals since November, and it's GREAT! I think it even helped with my acne because it's so light and doesn't clog my pores. Here's the important part: You have to use the "matte" formula, not the original formula. You can buy it at any Sephora store. I'm also not so oily anymore.
By the way, Bare Minerals may be a little more expensive than what you're used to paying but you only need a little at a time. I'm still on the same products I bought in November, and I haven't even used half.

My face is also oily and I am also insecure about not using make up. So what really help me was next products: a) to keep oil away I discover: Intensive Pore Minimizerf from Perricone MD, it doesn't really help to minimize pores but absorbs oil instantly!, it's almost like magic and for more than 12 hours and b) use make up from Clinique, for the day I use: Moisture Sheer Tint SPF15 and for special occasions when I want a little bit more cover I use Even Better make up SPF 15, both from Clinique and they are light and doesn't make you break .
Hope it helps!

Nope, I use neither. I feel like it's all too much for my face. I sometimes use the Bare Minerals bronzer though.

I've been using a primer by Smashbox for a little while, but only in my T-Zone because it's just a sample. And yes I generally use a pressed powder to finish up.

Hmm I've seen bare minerals everywhere! My only concerns are cost and I'm afraid it would be too sheer. I have a lot of acne, I'm afraid it won't give me the disguise I'm looking for. Hows the coverage?

The coverage is OK, but if you're looking for more you may need a concealer to use underneath. I was using a concealer at first, but the more I used the Bare Minerals the better my skin got. I've been using Bare Minerals since November, and I stopped using concealer about 3 months into it. I feel much more comfortable with my skin because I don't break out as much and my scars are starting to fade.

Laura Mercier oil free foundation is very good and it does provide fantastic coverage, I think it is definitely worth trying. I believe the concealer is also good but I haven't personally tried it as they don't make a shade light enough for me. I did buy the oil free foundation in Porcelain Ivory to try and I do love it but sadly it is far too dark for me to wear, I have very light skin. If you can I'd recommend going to a Laura Mercier counter and ask for a sample of the foundation to try, they will usual decant a small amount into a pot for you. I'd also recommend using a primer all over your face, not only will it help your foundation last longer but it will reduce the oxidisation of the foundation on your skin.

Well, based upon what you have written, it sounds to me that we have similar skin problems. Perhaps I can help!! Before I began the Regimen (I'm currently on week three. So far, so good.) I had little bumps all over my cheeks and zits; whenever I turned in the light an onlooker could see that my skin was NOT smooth. Plus it was shiny by mid-day, even after I powdered it.
I tried using Neutrogena SkinClearing oil-free makeup. This is actually foundation that has Salicylic Acid in it to help fight acne while providing good cover-up. It's not sheer, either. Before I used the Regimen, this stuff didn't make my skin look all oily, thus reducing the look of rough-textured skin.
The reason I switched to this makeup is because I read somewhere that mineral-oils can actually act like plastic wrap covering your skin. Not allowing skin to breathe thus making it break out and produce more oil as it attempts to break through the layer covering it. I realize that everyone's skin is different, but perhaps both you and I have a stronger reaction to Mineral-Oils? Who knows. Worth a try though, right?
Keep in mind, that I've definitely seen more improvement going bare-skinned on Kern's Regimen though. And don't get the wrong idea... my skin looked horrendous for the first week I went without makeup on the Regimen... but it's well worth it.

THat's just the stuff I was interested in! Too bad its $42, I'll have to save up for that..
What primer would you recommend?

I saw that at the store today.. I'm iffy about this BECAUSE it has Salicylic Acid. I use this already in my skin care and have very sensitive skin. I'm afraid it would irritate my me more..?

Personally, I would stay away from any drugstore makeup. You get what you pay for... and those are too cheap!
If you want a liquid foundation, I have been happy with clinique's foundation. They make one with salicylic acid that absorbs oil, so it helps keep your skin matte. When I wear makeup, I put on the clinique liquid and then brush the everyday minerals over it.
I have never met a primer I liked, so I wouldn't recommend using a primer. Maybe it's just my bad luck, but they've always made me break out. Feels like my skin is suffocating...bleh.
Also-- if you try clinique-- get a sample first! Any make up counter should give you a sample first. I know it's not fun to be a pest and try to get a sample... but you are worth it! Make sure it is what you want.
Good luck!

What primer would you recommend?
Laura Mercier make an oil free primer but I haven't tried it myself. If you have acne scaring I'd recommend using a Lancome La Base Pro as it will help even acne scaring and will soften your skin, it is oil free and non-comedogenic.

i recently tried applying ELF HD powder before my liquid foundation. i buff it into my skin with a kabuki brush, apply foundation, and then use the powder again to set it. i don't know how long it keeps my face matte, but i think it's a good amount of time. it works better than any other setting powder i've tried. i wish it wasn't white bc it does show up in pics, but i just be sure not to use too much of it or else i'll look like a mime. makeupalley has a lot of suggestions on how to apply it : D
good luck with your search!

Actually, I haven't really been wearing much makeup at all lately and have seen improvement. other than that, I did end up getting Neutrogena Healthy Skin liquid foundation and Maybelline Shine Free loose powder when I do.
This stuff is non-comedogenic, right?

Thanks to dan's BP Treatment, my skin is completely clear (see my success story on my blog) I no longer wear foundation (unless performing, then it's required), rather maybe some concealer, powder, maybe blush, and eye makeup. I'm very happy with my decision and outcome. Thanks for your feedback!

but yeah. Does it make a difference, the way the concealer is applied?
