I'm currently taking both together, have only been on both for a week, but so far results have been positive. No noticeable negative side effects.

thanks for the reply! i've been on yaz for 6 months and there hasn't been a significant amount of improvement for me. so my derm wants me to try something else with the yaz (he keeps suggesting accutane but im still not sure i wanna be on that) so i asked him about spiro since i feel like it seems safer than accutane.

i'd really appreciate it if you keep me updated on your progress. my next appt is at the end of april so i probably have to make a decision by then

i have some other spiro questions that anyone can answer for me.

so i've been on yaz for like 7 months now..it hasn't made my skin worse but it seems to be working reallyyy slowly. yaz and spiro are both similar cause they both have the same active ingredient. but on the yaz packet, it says there's only 3mg of the drospirenone. so really..i've only been taking 3mgs of 'spiro' a day. while there are people who are taking 25, 50, or 100mgs of spironolactone a day. so im guessing people see better results on spiro cause there are much more mgs in it, right?
do you think adding spironolactone will help in getting better results?

my main problems are my cheeks..i still have red bumps on my right cheek that are papules. my forehead and nose are clear. my chin is pretty clear..although i sometimes get a pimple or 2 around that time of month but then they're gone in a couple days. and i've stopped getting painful cysts on my chin too. do you think spiro will be helpful in getting rid of the papules on my cheeks?

I think yes. If it's hormonal acne, then there is a high chance the spiro will definately help. After reading up un spiro and the reviews, it has worked for many women. I too am on spiro. I took 100mg the first month. I'm almosto completeing my 2nd month at 150mg. I have had no negeative side effects. Only thristy/dry mouth, but that went away. I'm not clear. I don't have "active" acne per say. I also don't know in regards to BC, since I have never been on it.

if the acne isn't hormonal, then would spiro not help out at all???

im pretty sure mine is hormonal..i just can't seem to get rid of these red bumps i got during a breakout caused by a different bc i was taking during the summer.

how does spiro work anyways..is it just an androgen blocker? or does it decrease oil production? and how long can you stay on spiro?

i have a feeling i won't be able to take spiro+yaz together. i had blood work done last week and i got the results today. my derm said it really isn't an issue but my potassium level is at like 3.4...the normal range is at like 3.3. so it really isn't a big deal cause it's not drastically high and said not to worry about it. but im assuming it's the yaz that is causing it to be a little bit high. so then if i do start taking spiro, im sure my potassium levels will increase more which would cause a problem.

does anyone know what is the dangerous range for high potassium level? so i can keep a look out on that. like is 5.0 too high? 10.0?

My understanding is spiro is an androgen blocker so it keeps the androgen from affecting your skin, some women have had a great reduction in oil production. If you did take spiro and yaz together, your derm might have you take a little less spiro. You can take anywhere between 100-200 mg of spiro a day. Spiro might help the acne tremendously, from what I'm hearing a lot of women like it. If you go on it, make sure you drink plenty of water and don't eat a ton of salt or potassium rich foods. A little potassium in foods is ok so don't stress. My derm said you could stay on spiro for a long time, I didn't ask how long that is.

well today my derm prescribed me spiro 100mg(50mg twice a day..50mg in the morning and another 50mg at night). and i'll still be taking the yaz. im kinda worried that it seems a lot of mg too soon and may cause a pretty bad initial breakout. i really do not want to go through another bad breakout like i did last summer. i did tell him that if the breakout gets way too bad within a month, then i'm stopping it.

Normal serum potassium levels are 3.5-5.0 at the hospital I work at. We usually do not treat hyperkalemia unless > 5.0 and/or symptomatic. Just be careful with drinks with electrolytes (i.e. Potassium) and foods like bananas. And drink plenty of water. Always good to get your chemistry panel at baseline and 1 month after starting spiro and/or yaz. Hope this helps!
