Sebaceous filaments have been the bane of my existence for years. Even now that I don't get acne, I'm still plagued by these little white plugs on my nose.
For the past two weeks I've been applying hemp oil to my nose topically and it seems to help. Help, not cure. I still get a few sebaceous filaments here and there but they're not as numerous. It might be the linoleic acid content in hemp oil, which some say prevents sebum from hardening. I don't know if that's true, but hey as long as it works then I'm happy.
my supplement log for oily skin and huge sebaceous filaments

i stopped b5 after i added zinc and vitamin a&d. and surprisingly after i took zinc and vitamin a and vitamin d for two days, oil production on my face reduced significantly . i cant determine its the effect of the zinc and vitamin a&d which were just taken for two days or the vitamin b5 which although i stopped was technically still in my body.
anyway since the effect was good, i continued the zinc and vitamin a&d. and after one week from then i quitted vitamin a to see whether oil production would increase, and it remained the same. than i quitted vitamin d but i cant tell the effect because THE SUMMER IS COMING! that means it becomes hotter and oil production is meant to increase when its hot!
so unfortunately oil production increases significantly than the days when i took zinc and vitamin a&d.
right now i dont know the reduction of oil production is the effect of zinc&a&d or b5 or both. but since i recently read several threads by databased, which says blood serum zinc level is highly related to acne situation, i will continue zinc and vitamin a and vitamin d to try to increase my blood serum zinc level and monitor my oil production at the same time.
now everyday i take 200mg zinc from zinc gluconate, 4000IU vitamin d, 10,000IU vitamin a, multivitamin.

i need to add an result to this log. although i report now, i actually stopped the zinc, vitamin a, d, multivitamins mentioned above on May 25th. so i took zinc+a+d around 50 days and here is the results.
dose: each day: 200mg zinc from zinc gluconate, 4000~8000IU vitamin d, 10,000~30,000IU vitamin a, multivitamin.
result:
1. no significant decrease of oil production, still get occasional acne, though in such a high dose of supplements.
2. i took a blood test after i stopped zinc+a+d, and the test showed my blood serum zinc level was much higher than normal, which was not a helthy thing. it demonstrated two things, 1) i have a normal absorption ability of zinc. 2) my oily skin and acne are not related to zinc level, since such a high zinc level cannot decrease oil production or completely clear me.
all in all, neither up to 10g/d vitamin b5 or high dose zinc+vitamin a+vitamin d got desirable result.

As far as self medicating, it's important to look into side effects, and realize that not all of the possible side effects will be realized. Now with some clinical, peer reviewed studies that I have read, EPA (an omega 3 fat) and GLA (an omega 6 fat) are both known improve the quality of one's sebum, decrease the amounts of active lesions. Of course many mainstream doctors do not advise taking supplements, but there is a lot of empirical
Hi Tim, I really like to read these studies. Can you give me the url or the title? Thanx!

200mg is way too much zinc. You probably shouldn't have taken anything over 50mg. You should also get your blood tested for copper because you probably have a deficiency now.
