I was prescribed Doxycycline around 2 years ago for my acne and after around 2 months my face started peeling and my whole body became dry and itchy so i stopped. Ever since my skin has been bone dry like paper and has visibly thinned all over (worst on face, hands, arms, legs).

Has anybody else experienced this side effect? I'm trying to figure out how to somehow thicken my skin up again, I have no idea what Doxy has done to my body but i regret taking it every day.
My skins also gone all wrinkly from the thinning and i'm only in my 20s.

Along with the skin problems I've also gotten severe loud high pitched tinnitus from taking the drug.

Anybody else gotten bad side effects from taking it? Anything that you've tried helped at all?

Thanks

i could be wrong but i dont think doxy could possibly cause skin thinning. its not doing anything that major to your skin. its just killing the bacteria inside your body. can you post a pic? what other products have you been using on your skin? maybe that is causing your skin to look thin or something. i have never heard of any products doing anything like that though. as far as the tinnitus you should go to your doctor and get your hearing checked and ask them what you can do for the ringing in your ears. i am on doxy now and i had ringing in my ears before i even started from going to a lot of concerts and sporting events. i am kinda used to the ringing now though for some reason. i think there might be something you can take though for it. i am 2 months into doxy and havent had any issues with it but then again i have also taken minocycline and amoxicillin with no issues either.
anyway make an appt with your doctor and get checked out. make sure you tell them your concerns and tell them you were on doxy and see what they say. i dont think i have read anything about it causing tinnitus but i have heard others say that it does.

Thanks for the reply Karen. I've tried taking a few pics but they don't really show it properly, I've been to a couple of doctors about it but they're clueless and offer no advice. It's as if Doxy has stripped all of he oils from my skin and left it all thin, papery, dry and wrinkly. My hands especially have a strange tissue papery type texture, even my eyes are always dry and have and moisture anymore.
I just feel stuck on where to go from here in order to fix it. I'll probably just have to keep going to different doctors and hopefully find a decent one eventually.

can you go back to the doctor that prescribed the doxy? maybe you had some sort of bad reaction to it. i would at least call the doctor and tell them your situation and see what they think. do you use moisturizer? if so what kind are you using? i use olay regenerist uv defense spf 15 for day and then i use either the olay regenerist deep hyration cream or olay definity restorative sleep cream for at night. i use benzaclin as well as taking the doxy and the olay lotions and creams really helps to keep my skin nice and hydrated. you could also ask your doctor if they have any certain cream you can put on your skin to help with the dryness. good luck!!

I've been back to the doctor about it but she just denied it was the doxy that caused it (covering herself i guess?)and it's just a huge coincidence that my skin has been wrecked within 2 months of taking it.... rolleyes.gif

I use moisturizer but it doesn't help the skin density, it's extremely thin all over now and all of my veins are visible. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to reverse the damage it's done, such a terrible drug. sad.gif

Hello I came across your post because I was researching thin skin as a reaction to Doxycycline. Under most of the searches I did on Doxy, one of the possible side effects was thining of the skin, "Cautions and side-effects are similar to those of other members of the tetracycline antibiotic group. However, the risk of photosensitivity skin reactions is of particular importance for those intending long-term use for malaria prophylaxis because it can cause permanent sensitive and thin skin." Its the first warning under "cautions and side-effects"

If you still have the little paper pamphlet that comes with your Doxy prescription, see if you can find the side effects section and see if it lists thinning or sensitive skin. At the least you can inform you doctor so they will know what they heck they are prescribing. Sadly many doctors don't know all the side effects, and often they don't tell you, because if they did, you wouldn't take the product. Most doctors intend to help people and heal them, but there is a "drug dealer" element to many doctors practices as well. Drugs are over relied upon as an easy fix or blanket cure rather than taking the time to find the real cause of the problem.

I was prescribed Doxycycline by an eye doctor for a possible continuing high bacteria levels in my body. I am on dialysis, and the the Doxy prescription was really a shot in the dark. I only took it for a few weeks and it did seem to help with my puffy eyelid problem, though once I took the time to read up on the drug, I feel the possible side effects are not worth risking. I will keep looking for a solution to my problem.

Bottom line, always read up on anything you are prescribed, some times the cure is worse than the disease.

Good luck and I hope you can reverse your condition, perhaps more Vitamin - D and other vitamins that help the skin?

Hi, I am experiencing the similar issues. I was prescribed about 4 years ago, Acutane and Doxycycline about two years ago and my skin has gotten thinner. My feet looks very wrinkled like I am 100 years old and I am 38. The wrinked started appearing about 3 years ago. I am also prone to bruising alot. Have you found a way to thicken the skin again? I am at a lost and embarrassed to wear sandals, shorts, skirts, dresses in the summer. Please respond.

Hoping to hear from you soon

I'm so sorry that happened to you - after reading the posts about Doxycycline and skin thinning I went off it. The good news is that there is something that works well to restore skin thickness that's available both OTC and by prescription: HGH - human growth hormone. About a week ago I started using a topical OTC brand that I put on every night (about 3/4 tsp - been changing the places I put it on - supposed to put it where there's less hair, and recently started putting it on my face) and am already noticing an improvement. Mine is made by West Coast, and has about 5% HGH, but there are probably lots of other formulations out there.

I'd also check with a good holistic/homeopathic nutritionist if possible. Mine has been far more helpful than medical doctors on nearly every issue. Altho some docs are beginning to think holistically vs. just pharmaceutically, many still tend to just prescribe w/o knowing all the possible side effects.

Hope it works for you, too - best of luck!

Oh, another thing that might work - and helps with most things - is a type of chiropractic called Network Spinal Analysis. It restores full nerve function throughout the body, allowing the body to heal itself. Believe it or not, I've recovered from seizures, hypothyroidism, and quite a few other supposedly *permanent* medical procedure/pharmaceutically-induced "conditions" with the help of NSA and my homeopathic nutritionist.

Nope, not getting sponsorship here eusa_angel.gif - just been stuck with quite a few bad medical side effects that I wasn't warned about beforehand and then afterwards was told were permanent. It's amazing what your body can heal, with the right kind of support. There are NSA offices (and good intuitive homeopathic nutritionists, just ask around for referrals, or message me and I'll check w/ mine) all over the world. There's definitely hope - the medical community just tends not to be educated about all the other options. Keep up what you're doing - don't take *it's permanent* for an answer, and best of luck!
