I am a licensed cosmetologist since 06'. I will message you...maybe you live in my area...not sure though ha.

It all depends on the school you are going too...well I learned nothing at the school I went to, just how to pass state boards, all I did was memorize. Easy breezy for sures. And people wonder why their hair cut sucked, because its too easy to get your license without learning anything nonetheless actually having a passion for doing hair. It's a fine line. I don't actually work in a salon right now, I do haircuts on the side and makeup as well. I am going back to school now.

Beauty school is interesting to say the least. It's competitive and caddy most of the time, I had to get out of it..drama not saved for the momma if you know what I mean. But that's my opinion. It all depends on where you are working and the clientele makes all the diff. I don't think I gave hair enough time, I never found a place I really enjoyed. But its awesome, I love creating, but that is something I have innately. Creativity and a sense of style. I love people for the most part wink.gif and love to be a therapist. I love conversion and art. The worst place I worked was SUPERCUTS cause they don't care about your uniqueness or your relationship with your client, they want Quantity not Quality. I did 21 haircuts in a day....RIDICULOUS.

Anyways I had also read you say "one lady told me I should get a full cosmetology license instead of just esthetician because I can do more things with it and I won't have to go back and go through school again."

There is no "full" license. A cosmetologist license is the hair and nails and some aspects of the skin, but we don't do the real nitty gitty deep stuff that estheticians do. We do not study the skin as in depth. I wish I got my esthetician license much more interested int eh skin than the hair ha. You'd have to do extractions and you'd be way more knowledgeable about skin diseases and the cause etc.

Both licenses are completely different. If you want to do up dos, highlights, dye, wax brows, chin, face etc, bikini areas, mini facials and mani and pedis then be a cosmetologist. If you want to work in a 'medical spa' and do facial extractions, like zits, understand and perform different facials, you cant be afraid to touch someones face, you would be performing various techniques to tighten, firm, relax or rejuvenate people, you'd understand about blue lights, perform back facials, message techniques, and the skins development etc be an esthetician.

Your call! It was more hours to become a cosmetologst 1400hrs I believe in my area than an esthetician 800hrs.

I hope this helped!

Thank you so much for your effusive reply! It is interesting. I am curious to know if we live in a similar area! I decided to go with getting my esthetics license, as that is my true passion! I wanted to do cosmetology to get the cosmo license so I could do everything, and I still might sometime, but I think my personality is also better suited to the spa environment. I've noticed that a lot of the cosmetologists at my school are truly a different (not better or worse) breed. I've heard the story about learning nothing but state board so many times, people like you have been coming to my school apparently to get the actual knowledge you need for real-world scenarios. I almost went to a school that only taught state board. I didn't know if that was good or bad, luckily my mom helped me. So what are you doing now with all your creativity? smile.gif Supercuts people usually butcher my hair. 21 haircuts a day is INSANITY, especially if it's long!!!

My dream would be to be a qualified, professional make up artist! I know I could do it, I have a real passion for make up and I learn easily the only thing holding me back is my skin sad.gif seriously, I have never seen a make up artist with bad skin!! do any of you ladies know about this? Is it impossible for me to ever get a job as a professional make up artist so long as I have acne?

You should absolutely do it!! I don't think your skin should hold you back at all. Maybe you've never seen a make up artist with "bad" skin because they are so artful about concealing it wink.gif I would definitely do it. You can always try to improve your skin along the way. When people see your passion and talent nothing else matters in the end.

If you're going into esthetics, I highly recommend getting certified in something like microdermabrasion, but it also depends what kind of spa you want to work for. The spa I work for doesn't really do any kind of treatments like that, this spa focuses more on using all natural products and offering services that are relaxing. I don't how many hours you have to have to get your license in California, in Montana you have to have 650. Cosmetologists have to have 2000!

I also agree with the people who say that cosmetology doesn't really focus on skin care that much, they learn more about hair and nails. With esthetics, you get more in depth with skin care. Microdermabrasion is an extra 50 hours here. I also recommend working in an area where there is not that much competition, and where you have constant tourism and/or people with high incomes because these are people that get spa and facial services done, so you'll actually make money. I am busy in the summer, but there's practically no work in the off season. Because of that, I am going back to school and getting a degree. Also, I got my esthetics job through my school, my instructors told me who was hiring. Hope some of this was helpful!

This business is amazing! Im in Upstate New York, I own a school, and we have had our highest job placement ratings the last few years than we have in nine years. Business is booming, people want to look good and feel good about themselves, and their turning to their estheticians to for ALL of the solutions and answers!

Take it slow, take a deep breath and let all of your options come to you. Don't jump in to ANYTHING! Let your time in school be your guide. As you learn you will start to find your likes, dislikes and your "niche"; what you may think is a good fit now may not be at all where you want to be in a few months. There is one, and only ONE thing you must do...learn, learn, learn; even if your bored, frustrated, tired or overwhelmed; take advantage of your instructors and fellow classmates and learn everything that you possibly can. Your education will drive your future and your success! Good luck!

Hi ladies,

thank you so much for your responses! I graduated a few months ago and I am almost through the interview process. I am hoping to work at a spa/salon and Sephora! We did learn microdermabrasion at school so that was awesome. It's 600 hours to get an esthetics license in CA. Thank you again for all the advice!
