You are dead on correct that acne comes from several different issues, hormonal, topical, some who have PCOS. Exactly. And yes diet plays a huge factor into all of these conditions as your body is a bunch of parts that equal one whole. That is the problem with western medicine they often put too much attention on specific body parts (we have GI specialists, thyroid specialists, infertility specialists etc) these specialists do not look past their own "special area of research" if it isn't related to that specific body part than they refer you out. I know because I have dealt with these specialists first hand. The body needs to be treated as a whole, not as a hormonal issue, not as a digestive issue etc. If I had to list all of my resources I would be here all day. I work in the holistic health field and deal with hundreds of clientel on a daily basis with acne that have resolved it (and their health) through diet and switching topical products to natural based non chemical/synthetic brands. It is true acne is not a disease but a reaction and that what I was getting at, acne is like your cars check engine light telling you something internally is not right. Many people will choose to simply remove the "light bulb" in the check engine light (taking antibiotics etc) that will stop the symptoms but will not address the actual issue.
Here is a clip from the "world journal of gastroenterology" responded by Dr Mercola-
QUOTE "Most people, including many physicians, do not realize that 80 percent of your immune system is located in your digestive system, making a healthy gut a major focal point if you want to maintain optimal health. Remember, a robust immune system is your number one defense system against ALL disease.

The elements in the environment control the hormonal processes in your body that program your brain to control your behavior. So a brain without a body is mindless, but a body without an environment is brainless. The fluctuating fat base on that body is really an immune response that protects and makes you viable in all seasons of the year. Your behavior with regard to food cravings and appetite is simply an immune response, too (e.g., Nelson 2010). Homeostasis. The immune system is much more than bone marrow or spleen, Peyer's patches or thymus cells. Even the lymph system is only a part of what we call the immune system. Those sites are actually just factories for the production of white cells, lymphocytes, or T cells.
About 80 percent of the full force of your defensive immune system resides in your intestines or gut (e.g., Maestroni 1998). This makes sense, since most toxins will enter through your mouth. Even though we're led to believe that the immune system is our defense system, nothing could be further from the truth.
The immune system is planetary, not individual.
Our hormonal interface with the world in the form of the HPA axis means that the immune system is really "the man behind the curtain" working the knobs and dials that make the brain seem so competent.
The elements of the immune system--gut, skin, fat, lymph, brain, and glands--all recognize, communicate, memorize, react, and even plan to survive earth changes that have been timed into our programming by millennia of experience. These capabilities mean that the immune system is as sentient, on its own, as you think you are. It also makes sense that 80 percent of the immune system is located in the gut because the gut was your original brain. As we slithered across a rock, pre-"head brain," the neurotransmitters we know, like dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine, and hormones like adrenaline and insulin ran "The Project" -- you, from your midsection (e.g., Petrovsky 1997).
I could really post all day long with references. Here are some great books on it. Several of them written by Western Medicine DR's M.D.s and even a Neurosergon.
-Dangerous Grains by James Bradly M.D- (covers over 200 diseases linked to gluten/grains such as chronic pain, skin disorders, auto immune disease, digestive disorders, infertility etc)
-Going Against the Grain by Melissa Dianne Smith (insulin related problems, hormone issues related to grains and gluten)
-Breaking the Viscious Cycle by ELaine Gotshall B.A. M.S c (healing the digestive tract, diseases, skin disorders through food elimination)
-Nutritional and Physical Degeneration by Weston Price DDS "Dr weston Price was one of the most prominent health researchers of the 20th century.... This extraordinary masterpiece of nutritional science belongs in the library of anyone who is serious about learning how to use foods to improve their health" Dr Joseph Mercola
(weston price traveled the word with years of studies traveling into the bush of Africa, The islands, Peru and the swiss alps as a dentist studying why some where prone to bad teeth and cavities. What he found was diet was the main factor and that it was also the main factor on why those with good gut health and food practices had great teeth, bone structure and skin with a lack of disease.)
Gut and Psychology Syndrome- Dr Natasha Campbell Mcbride MD MMEDSCI (Neurology), MMEDSCI (Nutrition)
(Dr Natasha is a neurosergon who's child had autism, she couldn't find help for her child with western medicine so studied natural health through foods and was able to reverse her childs autism completely by healing her childs gut. Her diet has also healed thousands of people of psychiatric disorders, skin issues (acne, excema, psoriasis) hormonal issues, etc) The diet is called the GAPS DIET (you can google it.)
Here is a clip from DRBraly MD
"As recently as 1990 in Europe, and 1996 in the United States, celiac disease was erroneously considered quite rare. On this side of the Atlantic, it was thought to affect about 1 in 4,850 Americans and Canadians. Thanks to innovative new laboratory testing, we now know that celiac disease was and continues to be grossly underestimated. More than 2 million Americans and Canadians suffer from this gluten-induced illness. This is approximately forty times the prevalence we were told less than a decade ago. When actively sought, celiac disease is found in 1 in EVERY 111 apparently healthy, symptom free American adults, making it more than twice as common as cystic fibrosis, Chron's disease, and ulcerative colitis combined. Undiagnosed celiac is the root cause of many cancers, auto immune disease, neurological disorders, chronic pain syndromes, psychiatric disorders and other brain disorders and premature death. There is also a clear casual connection with some cases of osteoporosis, epilepsy, ADD, learning disorders, infertility, miscarriage and chronic liver disease. When place on a grain free diet reversal of many of these conditions frequently occurs."
I am not someone who came in here to throw out frivolous claims, I have been researching Naturopathy and Holistic health for over 7 years. There are tons of studies by those in the natural fields as well as big names in western medicine. It is well known that gut health affects your complete health and ability to detoxify and maintain proper hormonal balance. I am not here to pick fights at all. I care about people otherwise I wouldn't waste my time (do you know how long it took me to type this lol). People pay good money for this type of advice and I am sharing it freely with the hopes it can help others and that this information can spread so that others will not have to suffer with health issues let alone acne breakouts. I wish you all the best!
