I like make up.. and Iam one of those females who wears it everyday.... makeup like mascara, eyeliner, lipgloss eyeshadow....no more then that.....but I also wear foundation/foundation powder...I atually HATE having to wear foundation....but I wear it to cover up my moderate acne scars.... There times when I wish i just didnt have to wear foundation and I could skip the foundation and just wear the eye makeup and gloss etc but if I dont wear it I feel very self concious about my face ie. that when a person Is talking to me they are just looking at my marks/scarring on my face....Obviously the makeup doesnt hide it 100% but makes it look less visable.

Is bare minerals makeup good or doesnt make a difference?

I know what you mean. I love wearing eyeliner and mascara, but I absolutely HATE foundation. I hate how it feels on my skin. I only wear because I have to. There was a short period where I tried going sans foundation, but random people would openly stare at my face and/or give me advice on how to treat my acne rolleyes.gif . I've never had that happen while wearing foundation.

I'm on accutane right now and I can't wait for the day that I can feel confident enough to go out without foundation.

OOOOOHHHHH....that's the worst when people try to give adivce on acne. Yeah, hello, don't you think I've tried pretty much EVERYTHING already?!?

But yeah, I HATE wearing foundation. I wear it and concealer every day. It makes the reddness less visible, but you can still clearly see the blemishes. I feel like I'm wearing a mask. I can't wait to have clear skin.

If I had a few spots and my skin was clear then I would just wear powder to make my skin even and not wear foundation to hide my spots.
I hate my acne marks even more when I go dance lessons because when my face sweats i wish i could just use a towel and wipe my face or just wash my face with cold water but I would never do it because of my foundation!

.

Same story hear.. its really a common problem. I don't even wear any makeup like mascara/eyeliner or lip gloss, but I have to wear a foundation or something that would give a matte finsih to my skin making my scars less visible and reducing their redness. I prefer Lacto Calamine lotion as it is supposed to heal skin faster. But I have not achieved any thing significant yet because, new break outs keep on giving me new scars and lots of mental trauma. Experimenting wih my life style and diet. So its a continuous process of attempts to kill acne. Untill acne gets vanished for ever, I just can't stop worrying about my face scarring and can't stop sniffing around to fetch suitable products for my acne prone skin.

I am on the just water regime and while I love makeup (total sephora addict) I am not wearing any lately. just cuz not only do I feel confident enough to go out w/o makeup you can't wash anything off with just water. I have even stopped wearing mascara because just water leaves me with black circles under my eyes and I am afraid of getting soap in my eye if I use soap haha.
in addition I usually don't wear eye or face makeup without the other. if I wear just eye makeup I feel like people will think "you have the time/energy to put on eyeliner, why not concealer" and if I do face makeup its the same thing but opposite. so now the only thing I wear is some natural colored lipstick/gloss.

Howdie Gals!

So, you all hate the feeling of makeup, its like a mask. DON'T WE ALL, RIGHT? Ha.
Same goes for me, I used to wear a cover up on spots, then foundation and then any spots left over cover with a concealer. And eww, your face can't breathe and its just gross. I envied people with no face makeup.

I didn't think all the b.s. for the make up Bare Minerals was true... but a couple of months ago I bought a baremineral starter kit. I was skeptical at first, I thought NO WAY, will this stuff be able to cover my
scars which were HORRIBLE. And guess what... it actually did a pretty damn good job,
and the best part is... it feels like NOTHING on your face. NADA! I LOVE IT.

Not only that but it did heelp my skin alot to, its not clogging its made with sulfur,
which helps acne... and my skin started to improve a ton from switching to this
makeup. YAY for BareMinerals give it a try.

Bare minerals is sort of expensive at Sephora... But it lasts FOREVER.
But noww I also just get mine on ebay, people sell bareminerals for good buys on ebay.

Hi! I know what you mean- I love makeup (maybe a bit much?!) and battled with acne and the do I wear it/do I not decision when it came to my skin- it seemed like a vicious cycle, that wearing foundation made it worse, but not wearing it simply wasn't a realistic option either, I was too self-conscious. I recently made a blog and it deals with my experience with acne, and makeup and skincare I used when I went oratane (a form of accutane). I would love it if you guys had a look and maybe commented/suggested products for others to help? I think its such an underrated topic on blogs, and its something a lot of people have to go through- often feeling alone when it seems like all of your friends have it so easy with great skin!

I find mineral makeup is very soothing to my skin as zinc oxide and titanium oxide is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Plus it feels like nothing on skin and covers really well. I hate wearing liquid foundation too.

Heya, I love wearing makeup.... I wish I didn't have to but I look so much healthier when I wear it and it covers up my leftover stuff like scars and hyperpigmentation...

I have found the following to be really useful:

Loreal mineral bare natural mineral powder..... I was not convinced at first that it would provide good enough coverage but it was great... so much better than I thought it would be and it got me through the worst of my acne.

this is me at my worst with acne with bare minerals on:

http://a3.sphotos.ak...83391_562_n.jpg

The best concealor was clinique (high coverage, non comodogenic and contains salicylic acid... tripple win)

now my skin is calmer and I have discovered liquid minerals by maybelline which I use with the same concealor and the body shop mineral powder as a powder when I want a more matt look.

You need a foundation that will allow your skin to breathe and detox while wearing it. Most mainstream foundations contain silicones which create and occlusive barrier over the skin (all primers contain silicones) kind of like plastic wrap over your face. It does not allow it to detox properly and can cause discomfort as well as breakouts that can take weeks to show up. Mineral makeup is overall the best foundation choice for those with acne prone skin. Acne is your body's alarm system to something being "off" internally. You can experience acne for several reasons the top reasons are 1) allergic reaction- Your skin is your largest organ and also a major player in your detoxification pathways, when you eat something continuallly that you are allergic/sensitive this can cause liver/kidney stress, when your kidney is overburdened toxins have to excrete somewhere so they exit out the skin. This is the same reason you should try going sugar/grain/dairy free for 30 days and most people see a major clearing by doing this. You substitute veggies (cooked in olive oil and seasoned) for wheats and other processed carbs. Then you slowly add the foods back in, if you experience a breakout or feel badly you will know you are sensitive to this ingredient. I also recommend reading your labels. Do NOT use silicones, mineral oils, chemical laden products. These can lead to chemical induced acne, you would not know if you have this until you discontinue mainstream products and allow your skin to heal and see if the cosmetics where the issue, they are an adding factor to the acne senario for most people. Mineral makeup is an inert product (dry powder) so it does not ned to be preserved, therefore does not contain chemical preservatives and most formulas do not contain all the added chemicals, fragrance and synthetics that liquid products do. Just beware when purchasing your mineral brand if it contains bismuth oxychloride, you will find that many people (here especially) have a very bad reaction to this ingredient. It is used in Bare essentials formula which is why I switched to the brand that I am currently using.

i don't really have that much acne anymore but a lot of pigmentation, scarring, and redness. My teenage acne also transformed into adult acne - my pores have grown noticeably bigger throughout these years even though i never had a problem with big pores earlier.

So if i don't wear makeup i look super tired and my skin looks really dull. It's a really bad situation really... but I'm using mineral foundation now to correct it, and using an AHA moisturizer to help exfoliate the skin. Hopefully i won't need to wear much makeup any longer...

also whenever i visit beauty shops with asian brands with chinese/korean salespeople i get hounded by the lot of them, who come tell me whats wrong with my skin and then proceed to shove at me a bunch of products to fix it. they like to tell me that my skin isn't properly cleansed, then suggest cleansers and masks and scrubs for me. the funny part is that all i did is walk into the store. after they finish their rant i usually turn around and leave.

it's frustrating too. there's differing conceptions of how to treat acne in the states and in china, so i've gotten an earful on detoxification and cleansing properly to remove dirt. i sort of have a reason to be skeptical, especially because my recent skin clearing is due to western methods and western beauty products.

I love makeup as well and I look pretty bad without it, but I haven't used anything in the past two months because of my acne. It sucks, because I have a pretty expensive collection of products (definitely over $500 worth), much of it barely touched (I replace my makeup every few months because I'm very particular about expiration dates) that'll expire by the time my skin clears :( I just feel like my skin will heal MUCH faster if I let it breathe, and makeup won't be able to really cover up all my giant zits anyway.

Hot burrito I feel for you. You need to look into your diet as acne can often be associated to allergies to certain foods. Topical products can only do so much for you, although the wrong ones an simply create a mess. Mineral makeup allows your skin to breathe and can actually be good for acne prone skin as it often has titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in large quantities which are highly anti-inflammatory so they can aid in healing redness and inflammation. Since they are dry/powder form they help absorb oils throughout the day as well as not needing preservation or expiring early due to the fact they do not contain water. Mineral makeup has successfully for me covered up some pretty serious giant zits without looking like I was wearing makeup, which is why I am so fond of it. Keeping chemicals, petrol products and silicones out of your cosmetics can do wonders for your skin. Many people experience clearing from that alone.

I'm not using topicals, I'm on Accutane (which means that my originally dry skin has gotten even dryer so there's basically no oil to absorb)... I'll definitely consider the mineral makeup though, thanks! As for diet, I've vastly reduced dairy, gluten, and unrefined sugars - I already didn't really eat many fatty/junk foods to begin with, so this is the best I can do for now. I'm almost certain my acne isn't particularly diet-related (I have a form - pyoderma faciale - that's generally thought to be hormonal) but it makes me feel better to try to control something via my diet anyway and I feel like it can't hurt.

I think you have a good attitude to your recovery. I feel that for some, their acne could be controlled by diet etc but I think that for most of us it is tempting to convince ourselves that changing our diet can rid us of acne because we are sad about what is happening to us and food consumption is something we can control, plus it allows us to release the burdon of illness onto "modern diets" rather than accepting that our systems in particular are to "blame".

I think that it is entirely possible that something like the paleo diet will help people to stay clear, it does look very convincing on paper and some claim success with it but I found it utterly depressing trying to cut out all of the foods my culture allows. It is hard to maintain a dairy and wheatfree diet with high protein, low GI and mostly raw foods when you work full time. I am all for eating healthily but my acne made me feel like enough of an outsider when I dared to venture out socially without also being the one who had to always eat somewhere with a special menu or who ate just a side salad while everyone else joined in with "normal" food.

I am glad I tried it, I appreciate my food alot more now and I know alot more varied recipes so I can cut down on wheat (steamed/oriental food and roast dinners! who knew!) , I hardly have any dairy (I am a soy girl now since I read about the research connecting milk and osteoporosis) and I know alot more about nutrition than I did but I am glad I use medication (finacea topical) which has cleared me and I can enjoy my varied diet.

Make sure you ARE getting fatty foods in your diet though because you need them to absorb the accutane (lipid soluable so needs fat), try oils like virgin olive oil and avocado. These have th benefit of being generally good for your health aswell as your skin when you eat them.

Good luck with accutane, I hope it works for you. xx

xx

Thank you! I'm sure that some people really do have some food allergies that lead to acne, and eating really unhealthily all the time can't help your skin either - but acne is a largely hormonal skin condition, yeah. On the other hand, diet definitely influences hormones, so maybe that's why stuff like the Paleo clears people.

I agree that trying to eat a too strict diet is nearly impossible, especially if you do have a full-time job. For me at least, it would just create so much stress that the stress itself would cause me to break out more! I'm Asian to start off with, so recently I've just switched from eating white rice to brown rice and things like that, but oh man is it hard to keep turning yummy pastries down at my office because I swear to god somebody comes in every other day with a new cake or new batch of cookies.

I miss dairy, tbh :( Not so much the milk, but ice cream, yogurt (I know this is debatable but I'm paranoid), cheese, cream-based sauces... a;sldkjf. I am so glad to hear your topical cleared you, though! And yes, having acne is making me look a lot more into nutrition-related topics now. I'm sure my limited diet will probably benefit my health in the long run :)

(And yes, I'm still getting some fatty oils - I eat a good deal of sushi which has a fair bit of avocado, and I do eat meat in small portions, so thank you!)

Whew! This is a crazy topic but one that is so important! Diet is a huge factor in acne. End of story. Our food supply is the number one thing to blame for acne (whatever kind of acne you have) hormonally, topically whatever it is all one in the same. Your body works as a whole you cannot say it is simply my hormones, because your hormones are regulated by your thyroid your thyroid is regulated by your adrenals, your adrenals deal with stress and toxin overload and become stressed so that your thyroid doesn't work properly and then you have hormonal issues. The number one related issue to acne is YOUR GUT HEALTH. 80% of your immunity comes from your gut health. Our modern processed foods are not easily digestible, loaded with sugars, chemicals and fillers. Grains (with a focus on wheat) contain phytic acid. Our modern day wheat is hybridized and is extremely hard to digest with over 80% of the population having hidden celiacs or gluten intolerance and not even knowing it. Phytic acid is a coating on wheat that is very difficult to digest and therefore puts a huge burden on the digestive tract, when our bodies are overburdened with undigestible foods it cannot perform other vital tasks such as detoxification. When our detoxification gets jacked up, well then we get issues, like acne, psoriasis, health issues, insomnia, depression anxiety etc. So our modern foods are a big one. Grains feed all kinds of disease in general (look up the book Dangerous Grains by James Bradly M.D) it even goes into how they cause infertility and problematic pregnancies (once again hormone related). The other issue being antibiotic and birth control use. These kill off both the good bacteria and bad bacteria in the gut (which is why you may get temporary clearing), but with time you will develop other health issues such as digestive problems or other chronic illness. When you kill off the good bacteria the "bad" bacteria takes over and proliferates. Then you will have issues of a bad digestive tract including Candida Yeast overgrowth as well as pathogenic bacteria and parasites. When this occurs they put off toxins, your kidneys and liver cannot put up with the burden. If your kidney and liver cannot put up with the burden the toxins have to be eliminated somewhere so they exit the skin. The skin is referred to as the third kidney, whatever is not processed out your kidneys will surface the skin. Eating grain free is difficult and requires dedication, you can still make delicious foods with almond flour and coconut flour and using a small amount of honey as a sweetener. You can make these in advance and take them to work with you. I don't feel sorry or bad for myself with my restrictions, I feel bad for others who don't know any better and run into constant illness. Quit eating out as much and invite people over for dinner parties, its a fun way to be social and there are tons of great foods out there that are grain free, that even the normal food eaters love. In the holistic practice I work at we have seen hundreds of those with acne in even the most severe cases have full clearing by reducing the chemical load on their bodies and eating grain free to starve out the pathogens and restore their digestive tract. This is why yogurt and probiotics are also crucial to restoring health to your digestive tract and skin. We deal with acne on a daily basis in all forms and food is a HUGE factor.

@leighbrack2

Not meaning to sound argumentative but you make alot of hard claims:

"Our food supply is the number one thing to blame for acne (whatever kind of acne you have) hormonally, topically whatever it is all one in the same"

"The number one related issue to acne is YOUR GUT HEALTH"

"80% of your immunity comes from your gut health"

"over 80% of the population having hidden celiacs or gluten intolerance and not even knowing it".

and you have not said which studies these statistics are coming from, who conducted them of whether these statistics are estimations based on your opinion.

Alot of people on acne.org are impressionable and many do not have the research skills to question when they read so those of us who do research need to make sure we actually provide citations when we make statistical claims and reccomend huge lifestyle changes.

I have read alot about the nutritional background of acne (developed acne when I was at uni studying biological sciences so my procrastination was very much in the direction of acne research) and I feel that

1) not enough research has been done on the effect of diet on acne (or most other chronic conditions)
(I actually think that, in my opinion, diet can have a dramatic effect on chronic health conditions)

2) When absolute claims are made without refering to research, the validity of the diet/acne connection is damaged and I agree that diet is a huge factor in the management of any chronic condition (but a factor in managing a condition may not be what resolves the symptoms completely)

3) Acne is a symptom, not a condition (although its often treated like one) and, like most multifactorial conditions, is likely to have many different and interactive causes and affecting factors. Searching for (or claiming) one over-riding cause has been pone of the biggest time-wasters of modern science and has resulted in us missing out of alot of knowledge.

For years we have had the mentality that one illness will have one cause and this is time and time again shown to be untrue.
One illness is often just a diagnosis based on similar symptoms bieng grouped together. If acne has the same cause we would most of us would respond well to the same treatments but this is not true, we are all different and we all respond differently to different treatments.

Research has shown that low GI can help acne symptoms and so can certain vitamins.
No research has shown that all acne is one and the same and your claim that it is is certainly highly misguided. Many people have Acne caused by chemicals, some have acne caused by Poly cystic ovaries, some people have abused steroids and develop acne and others have higher than average androgen levels, others may find an allergy or have teenaged temporary acne.....

The reason I make an issue of this is that I have spoken to and read the posts of many, many acne.org members who develop very disordered relationships with food, being told bits and pieces of convincing but uncited "science". This can be well meaning or preachy on the part of the person providing the uncited info ... often the informants opinion is presented as fact and the (often young, despirate and emotionally fragile) person will try anything to get clear... including going on extreme diets which can put your health at risk.

Cutting out dairy needs to be done carefully for example to prevent calcium deficiency and in my opinion, this should only be done if the person has all the facts.

If you want to share an opinion about nutrition then present it as an opinion.... if you want to present it as fact then please back each claim up with some sort of evidence or point to where the person can get the evidence clearly.
